Duran Duran - Rio (From "Rio - Classic Album")

Duran Duran - Rio (From "Rio - Classic Album")
This latest addition to the acclaimed Classic Albums series takes us to the early eighties and the release of Duran Durans second album Rio. Released against a backdrop of riots, record unemployment and the Falklands War this optimistic and celebratory album would generate a string of hit singles and groundbreaking videos and catapult Duran Duran to global stardom. This DVD tells the story behind the writing, recording and subsequent success of the album through newly filmed interviews, musical demonstrations and both new and archive performances.
Moving on the floor now babe you're a bird of paradise
Cherry ice cream smile I suppose it's very nice
With a step to your left and a flick to the right you catch that mirror way out west
You know you're something special and you look like you're the best
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when she shines she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande
I've seen you on the beach and I've seen you on TV
Two of a billion stars it means so much to me
Like a birthday or a pretty view
But then I'm sure that you know it's just for you
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when she shines she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande
Hey now woo look at that did she nearly run you down
At the end of the drive the lawmen arrive
You make me feel alive, alive alive
I'll take my chance cause luck is on my side or something
I know what you're thinking I tell you something I know what you're thinking
Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twists across a dusty land
And when she shines she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grand
Her name is Rio she don't need to understand
And I might find her if I'm looking like I can
Oh Rio, Rio hear them shout across the land
From mountains in the north down to the Rio Grande
Do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do do

Um Dois Tres Quatroo!! They are older now but still a blast to watch. It's easy to take for granted that some bands can't play their music raw, without some studio sweetening up but these guys don't got nothing to prove, they can look good in a video and sound just as good, and be entertaining with just their bare instruments and a stage. Amazing, they shoulda did this for their fans back in the 80's.

I don't intend to sound like a creep, but really...he's not good at all. I love the band, they are amazing and pioneers in modern rock/pop rock. they were a rock band with a synth, not a synth band that played rock, which is part of the cause of their skyrocketing success. Look at how they did wtih Andy...now compare that with Dom Brown....wet noodle! Their other fill was great too, he was far better in Zappa and Missing Persons than in Duran Duran. Andy brought a specific sound that made them who they are.

***** I am not so 'up' on the band as you are, but am as much a fan. Yes, they were huge, and very important, especially circa 1981 - 1983, when MTV commenced, & they put out the album 'Rio', with all their cool videos. They were pathbreakers, let's admit. But who do you think is accountable for their work, the quality? Andy _____ ? {What is his last name?} And what about John Taylor? Did not he compose material? And Taylor with Simon LeBon contributed greatly to the *image* of Duran Duran.

  • @Calicat70

John G. Lewis i just read alot John. I agree, 81-83/84 was a prime time for them. Disco was coming to an end, the clubs needed something new...something to keep the scene moving. they were pioneers in their day. right with the music videos, that were like short films, the styles they created and trends they set. 3 Taylor's in the band Andy, John, Roger. No relation. Simon LeBon and Nick Rhodes. John and Nick started the band, Simon was the last member to join. They all worked and lived at the Rum Runner club and had their start there as the house band. Each were responsible for creating their own parts in the music writing process, as with any band. Andy wrote the guitar work and had creative influence on the rest of the band. He was hired in after replying to an add for a 'live wire' guitar player. He was a rocker and loved metal and hard rock. A lot of his great guitar work is buried under Nick's keyboard tracks. John and Roger would start writing a lot of the songs together, Andy would add guitar tracks, that were usually a bit heavier than what the club scene wanted, but it added to that "sound" they had. Nick and Simon polish up the process with melodies and synth tracks. So what I'm trying to say is this, Dom Brown is not very good in Duran Duran. In this version of Rio, his timing is awful, he's not playing the right chords, and isn't using the right effects. He's a totally different style of guitarist and he's very watered down....it's just.....flat and boring sounding. If you change it back to Andy and his sound...it just completes the band. Takes all 5 to make that "sound" they are known for.

***** With all respect ... I will have to disagree with you... I believe this is a very stylish and well done performance of "Rio", finished with real 'Duranni' flavor...! I liked the lead singing of Simon here, the synth work, Taylor's bass guitar was fine, drums, sax, excellent stage presence by all hands, and additionally, good camera work. All this in keeping of what Duran Duran was, imo. (...) In regards to your point re guitar work: yes, I agree you do have an issue. However, I thought what was done, though different, yes, was in keeping with the spirit of D.D. ... Thank you for all your research !! Btw.. Yes 1981 - spring 1984 was their high point... yet I was a college student at the time, and so familiar with the rise of the band. In the fall of 1982 - spring 1983, I thought that their videos were fairly easily the best on MTV... And you're right, too, (imo) about the transitioning from Disco to a new dance sound, which perhaps Rock was searching for. D.D.'s sound was a combination of New Romanticism in Rock, as it is termed, and which they really in part founded, along with this dance element you speak of. --------------------------------------------------------------- Right, circa 1980 Disco was over... but very quickly MTV would take its place as Rock's new arena: an area of development. ... As you are clearly a fan, I am a little disappointed that you do not like this version of Rio...!? Can you not admit that it was at least spirited ? Actually, I like it so much, I am thinking I will by the album. -- J. G. Lewis
