Summary:
Originally broadcast on MTV as the headline act of its New Year's Eve broadcast and simulcast on FM radio for the King Biscuit Flower Hour, this lively set from the popular British New Wave rockers Duran Duran marks their first major New York City triumph.
The group, which was spearheaded by vocalist Simon LeBon, had ruled the MTV charts since the end of the previous year, but they did not take off on radio as rapidly. For this show, Duran Duran was not only performing to a packed house at New York's Palladium Theater, they were playing to millions of viewers all over the world. The stakes were high, and Duran Duran went for the gold. Shortly after this performance, in early 1983, "Rio" was in the U.S. Top 10.
All the essential early hits are featured here - including "Rio," "Save A Prayer," "Hungry Like The Wolf," and "Girls On Film." The show is interrupted to count down the New Year on MTV, but otherwise it remains a consistently upbeat show. The group augmented its original five-piece lineup with the addition of saxophonist/keyboard player Andy Hamilton.
This performance showcases the band when they were on the brink of worldwide stardom, if they weren't already there. The success of Duran Duran during this time period gave them enough momentum to get through most of the eighties as a successful act. It would also serve as the base of hits to keep the band poised for more than one reunion in the years that followed.

In 2020/21 - I no longer believe or have thought in some years that DD had still be considered lightweight, by many of music cricitcs. The reason of the change is that the music critics today are judging what they hear based on sound/words/impact - not on teen idol Simon Le Bon etc (which duran duran did market their selves intentionally at maybe after their first album). These critics are born in the 80s or 90s, opposed to the earlier DD critics - critics of early DD rightly/wrongly often treated DD as lightweight. However, and this is a BIG however, in many camps people who like music have always known DD are a high calibre musical entity. The ones in this camp - like myself - endured criticism and disdain from music snobs-peers of the era. I no longer experience this, and in fact many closet duran duran fans have emerged. THere is much more freedom 'now' to like and enjoy the music without fear of labelled this/or/that. The consequences of this freedom: people hear duran duran for what they are, and recognise it.

Well was Andy when they were selling tours and records while he got millions for a album with no sales and no tours? So, no he was not a MAJOR contributor most of the 80s. As for the 2000s he barely toured with them and did one album with them. Then he left again and has been gone for 17 years. So no he was not a MAJOR contributor to their success. Simon, John, Nick, Warren, Steve Ferrone, and Nile Rodgers were along with Sterling Campbell and now Dom are MAJOR contributors to the success of Duran Duran!

I've seen them play Live many times through the decades, with various line ups & I was always blown away by their live performances & their eagerness to give the fan's a great show, while they enjoy themselves playing live also... Believe it or not it's rare to find band's that actually enjoy playing live & I'll tell you for why!.. So many people forget (even fans) that when your in a band or a solo artist, you have rehearsed that song/recorded it for an album/played it on various tv shows worldwide & toured for decades playing it in so many city's all over the world & some are in more than one show in one city & it adds up literally to tens of thousands of times that any one particular song has been played by the members of any particular band, yet the uninitiated wonder why band members need booze or drugs to play Live... I'll tell you why.............. As it can be soul destroying especially when you have many hit songs that the fans almost expect to hear at every gig, yet your touring a New Album... Don't get me wrong about hit song's as that's what you want when your in a band or a solo artist but it does come at a price & the reason why many successful band's quit when they're at the top is because familiarity breeds contempt, yet fans are left wondering, Why!.. But all the while never really understanding what it takes out of any given individual in a successful band & this is why Roger left the original line up as he was burnt out & not enjoying it anymore... Lets be honest fans are a demanding bunch & without realising they can expect too much from mere mortals... So many of modern day fans from the mid 50s onwards don't even take this into the equation & think that being in a successful band is walk in the park, sure it's not working down the mines, but it's taxing & can get old real fast... Hence my point about why Duran Duran are keen on wanting to put on a show that not only you enjoy but Duran Duran enjoy also... Being predominately a bassist first/the drum & for some fun lead & rythmn guitar last, I'll always watch John Taylor & Roger Taylor who are the engine room of Duran Duran, driving them on & leading from the back with steady pulsing grooves & all I can say about JT is that when I see him play live he is absolutely loving it & in his element... To me John Taylor enjoys being on stage playing his bass or acoustic guitar & it's not just for applause & adulation from the fans, but for the joy of playing live, as he'd be happy playing smaller venues... Sure John Taylor along with Andy were known for their substance abuse just like most members in a successful band, as at first it's for fun & a laugh but then it fast becomes a must & they can't get through any given day or perform without it... To give you just a simple example... Imagine leaving the UK one night only to arrive in another country thats so out of your time zone & out of time with your natural body clock, yet you've to go to do some PR before playing Live, but your body's still in UK time & wants to go to sleep... Take touring in America as that alone can knock you for 6 as it's spread across 6 different time zones, hence why pilots are restricted from doing too many flights in a 24 hour period & being careful to return back into their own time zone if & when possible... Lets say as a pilot you leave at 6am in your standard time zone & are arrive back by 6pm in your own time zone, then you are not going to burn out faster than other people who are travelling business men or a group of lads or gals in a band, as believe me it catches up on you & this is why I've always been thankful to those bands that play in my city only to fly off to play in another city that's half a day behind from the one they just left & you can literally arrive in another country the day before you left your last gig... Anyway enough of that & lets get back to how Duran Duran have endured through the decades as they have come up against negative press reviews & labelled as nothing more than eye candy for the masses, but they have stuck at it & proved their detractors wrong & have influenced many a new generation of musicians... One little annoyance I'd say is I just wish John Taylor would play his original made in Japan "Matsumoku Made " Aria Pro II SB1000 or SB700 bass guitars live more often, as they have such a great distinctive sound... As much as the I like the Peavey Basses he uses & they are of great build quality & sound along with the his Kubiki Bass Guitar & then theres the occasional time he'll play the Musicman Stingray that the late great Bernard Edwards gifted to him are all great sounding basses also, but you just can't beat the sound of those original Matsumoku made Aria Pro SB Basses & those one's only " & not the re-issues that came out a few years ago " as they sound nothing like the original Aria Bass Guitar's built in Matsumoku in Japan in the late 70s to mid 80s omwards... On ending, Duran Duran never stayed within the safety zone of an 80's band's, hence why many 80s bands disappeared without a trace... Along with writing songs that deal with the current climate of todays fears they have continued to move forward & try new ideas & have had success more often than not & the sales of their Paper Gods album in 2015 shows they still know how to connect with their original original fan base & be able bring on-board new fans also, as they continually strive to make music that is current but also music that makes you want to dance... Ps I came across this upload by accident & should really have put my phone down before coming across this, as i'd been looking into a particular brand of bass guitar for hours on the internet, so forgive any grammatical mistakes or spelling errors as I was knackered when typing this & my phones auto correct acts like it's possessed at times ....

KZread Is An Influencer I appreciate the points you’ve raised here. So many points to ponder and I feel guilty for wanting my favourite bands to play music from their whole catalogue, not just the newest album. Duran Duran are one of the greatest bands to ever have existed. They’ve lasted decades and sound as amazing as when they were in their early 20’s. Their dedication to playing live - and enjoying it - is a huge win for the fans who now range from early teens to grandmothers. I certainly appreciate them more now than I did when I was a teenager. Each band member brings a different strength and perspective to each song and that’s reflected in every single album. It’s no secret they like to switch it up every time they release an album and the fans have come to love it (mostly!) I hope they tour Australia 🇦🇺 again, I haven’t been able to see them perform yet as I’m not in a capital city - but if they come here again....I’ll be travelling to the nearest concert for sure. I do not want to miss them again.

@@MsHazza73 Hi Megan, I also do hope you get a chance to see them Live as there's nothing better than seeing your favourite sole acts or bands Live but alas the Music Industry is a pale imitation of itself now but Duran Duran (like Level 42) know there is still a huge hard core audience out there that want to hear them play Live & with Roger coming back in & their ongoing work with their long time friend Nile Rodgers & also working with people like Timberlake/Mark Ronson at al, then they'll always strive to stay fresh & want to continue on & if you caught any of John Taylor's Bass Breakdowns thst he has uploaded a New (Old Hit) Song each week to keep us all occupied while in Lockdown because of this Coronavirus Pandemic, you'll see he is still as passionate & enjoys playing the bass guitar & always has a look of enjoyment & smiles more often than not... I booked 2 Tickets back in 2019 to go & see my other favourite band & bassist Mark King from Level 42 but when this Coronavirus Pandemic hit my friend kept thinking we'll not get to see them but everything I've predicted with regards to this outbreak & the UK gradually coming out of Lockdown, then I don't see why we won't get to see them Live... As it's they were or are celebrating 40th Anniversay with the Tour being named " From Eternity To Hear " which is a play on words from classic award winning B&W movie " From Here To Eternity " The reason I mention this is I'm sure they're playing Australia & you should get a few tickets & them Live as they are one of thee best Live Bands you'll see... May this comment find you well in Australia & in light of this Coronavirus, stay healthy & safe & we'll get through this tough time & back to normality eventually... All The Best... Sláínte .....

KZread Is An Influencer ...I’ve literally just walked in the door, it’s not long past 7pm. Straight onto KZread to find John’s upload of View to a Kill. I’ve just watched it and actually left a comment saying how much more I appreciate them now than when I was younger! With age comes more intelligence and experience I suppose. You know what to listen for and what they’ve had to go through to get where they are. I really enjoy seeing them work with say Mark Ronson, he’s a brilliant muso - I have much respect for him both for songs he’s written and produced. I can see him with a long and successful career in the industry. I do hope they collaborate again. Maybe a collab between them and Billie Eillish? A nice dark track - between Simon and them writing lyrics....off the charts. You’re so correct, in that Duran Duran do see the benefits and love touring, much to the fans benefits and joy. So yes I may still be lucky. As for Level 42, they were not very big in Australia but I do remember they may have released one or two songs successfully here in the late 80’s from memory. If they tour here and they do the smaller venues, I may be fortunate enough to see them as they may stop more frequently along the east coast. I’ll keep a look out. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll look forward to it. Time for tea now so enjoy the weekend ahead, stay safe over there also. Megan
