It was ubiquitous anyway. I never would have thought it would have held up this well though. I didn't realize how incredibly unique it is. It's hard to be this unique and so damn good. Most shit this good is either copied a lot, or copies something else. --Another surprisingly unique and uncopyable song is Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. That was so huge and anthem like you don't notice that Cyndi Lauper has a one and only style with that and all her songs are so different from each other too. To be "pop" and avante garde like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode and Cyndi is also really, really awesome and hard to pull off.

I will never stop loving Duran Duran. Ever.

I was born in the USSR and until the mid-80s of the last century I almost never saw performances of musical groups from the so-called Western countries, only Soviet pop music and performances from the countries of the so-called “socialist camp”. It was rare to see any Italo disco and any other Italian pop music, but after 1986, Soviet TV began to show a much wider range of musical genres. And even a whole separate channel appeared, on which exclusively foreign hits were played non-stop. I remember I spent hours watching TV. (It was there where I first time saw this clip). I studied English at school, but I knew it precisely at the level that was expected in the middle classes of Soviet secondary schools. That is, practically at zero. But still, some kind of vocabulary had settled in my brain by that time, and I, as best I could, tried to translate and understand the meaning of the songs that were playing. It didn’t work out very well; often the jokes came out straight, rather than translations. But with the chorus of this song, it seemed to me, everything was absolutely clear and understandable, they are clearly singing the phrase “Oh, shit! What's this?” - what doubts can there be? And only then, about ten years later, when my level of knowledge of the language became better and the Internet began to appear, this funny mistake finally became obvious to me in all its glory. But this is not my funniest mondegrin. It seems to me that I got even funnier with Sting’s song “Englishman In New York”. I heard that he clearly sings: “Woaaah! I'm an animal, I'm a little animal - I'm an Englishman in New York.” But it remained unclear to me why he was so humiliated himself. On the other hand (from a zoological point of view), all people belong to the animal kingdom. Well, we are not bacteria, not mushrooms and not plants. So it's quite logical.

@@abbyboyone I don’t think anyone is disputing that DM belongs in. I absolutely agree with you. They are both fantastic. DD was a cultural phenomenon in the early 80’s and they revolutionized music videos. The amount of top 10 hits world wide is crazy. They deserve it. How cool would it have been if DD, DM, and the Cure were inducted in the same year? That would have been a great show.

I agree! I think at that time the market was flooded with hair metal & teen pop that music like this got lost, especially too because DD were always considered style over substance even though their music got better & more refined over the years. Notorious & Big Thing are more fine-tuned musically. I always maintain that if Notorious was a band’s debut album followed by this, they would’ve been considered a high-art, dark, alternative avant-garde act . How DD manage to combine guitars with synths is unmatched, especially in a song like this which defies any genres.

This has been on my playlist for 20 years now.

Not their best song, but probably their best song that isn't overplayed. Still sounds fresh as a result. Save A Prayer is probably my favourite DD song but I've heard it about a million times.

I’m only 20-years-old, but even I can appreciate how amazing this music video actually is, especially knowing the lack of technology that was available in 1989. Such a cool video!

This was done using analogue darkroom techniques with very little if any digital editing. Dean Chamberlain invented this way of exposing film to get the effects in the video.

Well, to be fair, without MTV, they wouldn't have had the career they did. Their looks, style and overall aesthetic were a huge part of why we became fans back then. The true fans loved the music, yes, but without those other elements, they're not Dx2.

One of my favourite Duran songs, even if this album didn’t do as good as the earlier stuff. It has a Depeche Mode feel to it!

This is a masterpiece. Both song and video.

This video is great. It's stop motion production in the late 80's - it's stellar. Not bad for the band not having to be there for the filming. The band had such a tight promotional schedule that they couldn't be there for the lenghtly stop motion photos to do the complete video. The only scenes that they are in is the opening scene and the "peering over the fridge door" scene and prior to that. The rest of the scenes are filmed with mannequins with their heads latex molded . You could never tell until the cat was left out of the bag. No bullshit! Still an awesome video....way before it's time

Duran Duran is one of the most populars and "ahead of their time" bands during all these years, in sound and image!

Duran Duran had hits after hits. The Best 80's group to me. Been listening to them since grade school. Love all their collection of songs. My all time favorite is "Say A Prayer"

“Divine intervention, couldn’t keep the word from leaking out...” I EFFING LOVE THIS LYRIC.

This song is like the 80s cold, unforgiving but great to have been there even as a teen.

I just love that buzzy bass and guitar wash that vibrates all over this track.

I loved this song since the start, still sounds so good, impressive.

Greatest band of the '80.

I like this song by Duran. It's so old, but timeless, that even today it's like new to me.

It was hard enough in 1988! in the UK they wouldn't even play this on Top of the Pops or on the radio, even though it got into the top 10...... the music industry wonted Duran Duran to just go away, but thank GOD they never did! Duran Duran forever! :)

DD's musicalization in ALL their songs, was really remarkable. Excellent combination of instruments

Agreed, many under appreciated songs these guys put out, especially after they put out A View to a Kill.. even streaming radio stations don’t play anything from Notorious to The Wedding Album..

Timeless....this song somehow, is a genre in itself .... and ,as said before still sounds fresh....
