What is this delusion that Ireland play good football under Kenny? Backwards and sidewards passing is not attractive football. They don't score goals. I haven't checked the stats but he most have one of the worst goals scored record under his tenure. Using Covid as an excuse - every single team had to deal with Covid so why was it specifically difficult for Kenny? If he had any class he'd have let Mick McCarthy take that Euros playoff. It was his team and campaign and did not have the decency to stand aside and let Mick finish the campaign. O'Neill and Trap could have easily tried to play expansive football but results matter so practicality kicks in. What Kenny defenders seem to say is we A) play great football (which we don't) and B) results are less important once you are attempting or perceived to be playing attractive football. I think the media figures defending Kenny for so long is just to cover their own arse as they were so vitriolic with their criticism of O'Neill and Trap, they have to defend their position now.

Maybe but he has also been given more slack. Brian Kerr last campaign he lost no games just playoff and was dumped despite his winning percentage. I think we can get more with a new manager. Team makes too many mistakes and has no answers when opposing managers switch tactics like against Netherlands.

He has done a what’s needed to be done at the cost of his job, someone had to do it and we will reap the benefits of that work with many of the players brought through will have 20+ caps 🧢 , This will pay dividends in the future. The main issue is the lack of investment in the game here in Ireland. If he does go I would really like him retained in some capacity as he is too passionate and knowledgeable about the Irish football landscape. He is only 51. The next managers job when it does happen will reap these benefits. This was something that was not done in the past.

I think he did his best to salvage Irish football. Throughout the professional era we’ve generally had a team full of top flight players. Now it’s an exception to have an established premier league player. That’s not good enough to qualify for tournaments. Looking at talent coming through it seems that we are having a resurgence which will likely not come to fruition under Kenny, but a successor. It’s harsh as Kenny has set up the platform. It’s totally unknown whether the successor will actually have the know how or intent to keep building on this. There are plenty of talking heads coming after Kenny, and I think a part of it is self interested people wanting his job because of the talent that may be on the horizon. The dire football of Trapattoni and MoN has significantly contributed, in my estimation, to the dire lack of talent the Irish squad has had since 2018. And it had been a long time coming through a steady regression. If your national side routinely plays a boring and negative style of football, then you can’t expect your country to produce exciting or talented players. We saw a dramatic regression under MoN prior to the Denmark thrashing. We were lucky to escape with a draw against Georgia who were technically superior to us. The expedience and expectation of some of the “fans” is ridiculous. It’s that same attitude which has contributed to neglecting player development at a domestic level. The teams that get the best results tend to be the best footballing sides. They include small countries like Morocco and Croatia. These countries didn’t play bad football in the hope they’d have good players some day, but they always play a good technical game. The attitude in Irish football has to change to not accept negative football if we want consistent long term success.

@@jackmurphy6864 Charlton made all that happen, it’s all written in his autobiography, but of course the likes of Dunphy has spent years tearing away at the reality of the situation and if you keep saying the same thing over and over people will start to believe it. People wanted to play for Charlton, he was a massive personality in sport who won the WC as a player, that’s the difference. Most of the team were also children of emigrant parents, they were English born lads similar to Grealish, Rice and plenty others who Jack convinced to play for us. He also had very good reasons for not playing Brady who was in the twilight of his career at the time.

@@Patrick-sh9tt Fair enough, but it doesn't change the fact they were foreign. Imagine the uproar if Sweden, for example (who almost never use players born outside Sweden) said they were borrowing 5 Danish guys before a game with Ireland ... who had 5 English in their team. Ireland didn't produce those players - it doesn't matter where their grandparents are from because they're not the ones on the field playing. If countries like Ireland and Morocco can just get distant relatives to play for them, then international football loses its uniqueness from club football. But that's another topic. Yes, Charlton did well, but let's face it, with the players he had, could have done even better. 2 wins in 12 tournament games is hardly stellar. The high-press game was very effective, but given the talent, it's a pity he didn't let them play better football.
