I won't argue that. An important historical event that has become topical and relevant as described by Christopher Nolan and an impressive cast, it will probably be the coolest.

I have a feeling we won't see a single German or any enemy soldier here. Nolan said it's not about war. If so this might be a great psychological thriller.

This is the last memory I have of my grandfather before he died. I said, "Hey Grandpa, wanna go see Dunkirk?" We were both covering our ears the whole time because it was so loud! He absolutely loved it. We went out for burgers afterwards. He said he remembered watching the evacuation in the newsreels when he was a little kid. Aside from the fact that this movie is a work of genius, it will always be special to me because of my grandfather.

Yeah, but it does change nothing to the fact that this film, atm, doesn't pictures how british high-command intended to save only 55K british soldiers, letting their "allies" die for them. And here, we see the royal navy, the royal air force, the british soldiers and nothing else. I doubt Nolan didn't know that.

i hate how so many people think harry fans don't even know what this movie is about. only because we're his fans doesn't mean we're living under a rock. i sure am a big fan of his, but what about? there's nothing wrong with that. and i am very interested in what this movie is about since i studied ecaxtly this topic this year in history class. plus: there are so many people watching a movie for a certain actor/actress because they are fans of them, so why shouldn't this apply to harrys fans? harry styles casts in a christopher nolan movie, get over it. i'm so much looking forward to watching this movie, and not only because of harry, but also because it covers such a horrible event in our past and because the trailer is absolutely thrilling. i can be both, a fan of harrys' and interested in history :)

"There's no hiding from this son" I wonder if this character is Charles Lightoller, highest ranking surviving officer of the Titanic, who in real life was one of those who took his yacht to Dunkirk to save the soldiers. Great story of a time Britain should be proud of.

  • @retroviolet

    @retroviolet

Nolan recently said his Dunkirk characters are fictional but many are inspired by real people who were at Dunkirk. I also believe Rylance's character is at least partially inspired by Charles Lightoller, but Rylance's name in the film is Dawson or Dawcett and he brings two young sons with him rather than a sea scout and a 36 yr old son. Interestingly, his older son played by Tom Glynn-Carney is dressed very similarly to the sea scout Frankie in the 1958 film. I think that may be a nod to the 1958 film. Also, the grandson of Richard Attenborough is in this film (Richard was in the 1958 film). Nolan's film is not a remake at all but the setting is the same event.

Come on people it's a Christopher Nolan movie, do you expect him to open a full movie plot in 3 minutes trailer ? If there's Nolan then there's mystery. Don't get judgemental and let the time take it course, I am pretty sure Nolan have brought best out of Harry in the movie. WAIT FOR IT.

Would that I were back in England. I lived there for a few years and got to see the Tube stations used as shelters during the Blitz. I met WW2 vets and talked with many who'd 'kept calm' when the Stukas and Heinkels rained death on them, and, in uniform or not, they just wouldn't give up. The Hurricanes thundered up to meet the enemy again and again, and strove for just one more against the 109s swarming them. And the flotilla of ordinary (was there such a person then?) Brits sailed to their boys, under fire themselves, to save their troops. They were not ready for the war that Hitler unleashed on them, and they could not stand, but they did not run. Then, and during 1940, they fought back against the war that came to them again and again, and each time they forced the invader back. For the second time in a century they stood alone against tyranny, a single lighthouse in the dark. Here at Dunkirk they retreated, but only for a time. They came back, and when they did, it was the enemy who retreated from before their terrible face. Heroes all. I am proud that America stood and fought with them. God save the British, now and always.

Right on Aristo Telian...very well said. I cannot understand how so many still think less of the British. I will always be proud of the British, USA and all the countries that stood up to Hitler and what he stood for. Great Britain has always been attack going back to the Spanish, Romans, Vikings, and we could go on. It is an island who took in so many people from other countries. So, thank you Aristo for putting into words that I couldn't have express better. War is a terrible things, and even now people haven't learned anything, God bless the British, too. My roots is British but born in Canada 76 yrs. ago. So many relatives fought in the Great World Wars, and did so many brave men and women.

I'm 82, and even though I was very young, I was very smart, as were most English kids in those days, and vividly remember this happening. (Why would I remember? I came to States as a single mother when I was very young. Now live in beautiful Tennessee.) I well remember them telling us about it on the BBC, or actually when it was over, I think, but it was a very heroic act on the part of the French, who stayed until all British troops were off the shores or had gone on into the French countryside, or who had died on the sands; and of course, those brave British troops, who had no place to go except maybe into those boats, many of which were little fishing vessels, and face the perils of that ice cold water in order to reach the shores of home. I had an uncle who survived Dunkirk and he would tell us all about it. My grand-daughter, a devout lover of English history, war movies are no exception (why, I wonder!) is dying to take me to see it in a real live movie house! I told her about Dunkirk about six months ago and she had made a note for me to tell her more about it because it sounded really interesting. Yes, there it was in bold letters in her Smart phone, DUNKIRK! So when I saw the trailer on TV for it, I couldn't wait to tell her. She was as excited as I was (amazingly, since she's 23 and extremely beautiful, just !Ike a model, who would think she'd love war movies, but she does!) And so now we're gonna go watch it on the BIG screen (my first time in a movie theatre in 15 years!) and I know I will thoroughly enjoy it!

This looks good. My grandfather was evacuated from Dunkirk, so I have somewhat of a personal interest in the film. Always enjoyed the old '50's Classic with John Mills, not bad for its time. I've noticed there's a few people in the comments asking where the French are. Someone has already pointed out that they can be seen briefly at 1:11 in this trailer, but I'm sure they'll get some screen time in the film, as they played an important role in covering the retreat of the BEF. If they don't, then I guess it won't be any worse than all those Hollywood movies about WW2 that view things entirely from an American perspective! There should be way more British WW2 films. Especially considering between June 1940 and June 1944 The British Empire had more divisions engaged against the Axis powers than either the United States or the USSR. Would be nice to see films on the St Nazaire Raid, the Battle of El Alamein, the Battle for Kohima, or even the defeat of pro-nazi Iraqi forces in Iraq in 1941. All could do with the big screen treatment!

Couldn't take my eyes of the screen , coming from a 15 year old that says a lot , definitely up on my top 5 , didn't think Harry styles would be any good but he was amazing , but the story line and how it was put together and the German planes dropping bombs and shooting people down did it for me , gave me goose bumps , puts you into realisation of all them teenage boys wishing to be at home with there family . I also went to Omaha and Dunkirk beach this year and you can't really realise what it'd be like for these men but after this film and of course saving private Ryan , it's shown me how it would of been for them men and kind of put it into aspect for me , overall I think it was absolutely amazing and if you haven't already you need to watch it .

Nolan where are the French ? Please do a factual movie and not some incomplete story that will stick into kids/young adults memories, remember Inglorious Bastard ? The French held a defence to help the Brits escape. For 9 days, from may 25th to June the 3th, fighting 20 times as many Germans without supply lines, 11,000 died and the lucky one who escaped to England were sent back the same day on French ground. "These Frenchmen, under the gallant leadership of general Molinié, had for four critical days contained no less than seven German divisions which otherwise could have joined in the assaults on the Dunkirk perimeter. This was a splendid contribution to the escape of their more fortunate comrades of the BEF" - Winston Churchill

I like how people go on a rage fest without any arguments whatsover. I watched the movie in cinema today and I was amazed at it's historical accuracy. Not only does it show the french holding the line but it also shows how the Brittish refused to let them aboard the ships and how Churchill publicly called the french to retreat with the Brittish yet ordered his officers just to evacuate only the Brittish soldiers.

Of the 400,000 men, well-mentioned in the film, nearly 340,000 will be evacuated in 9 days by the so-called Operation Dynamo (June 26-3). This unexpected success (the British General Staff only expected to save 45,000 men at the base) is the major consequence of the sacrifice of the French soldiers who fought to the end heroically while the British had deserted Edge at the beginning of the Dynamo operation. 35,000 French soldiers will be taken prisoner, I let you count the dead .. The bulk of the losses of the battle of Dunkerque did not occur in the areas and on the beaches which were harassed by the German planes "only" 3 days On the 9th (because of the intense smoke and low clouds) but in the suburbs of the city by the soldiers of General Fagalde who struggled heroically at 1 against 10 or even more!and the lucky one who escaped to England were sent back the same day on French ground ! "These Frenchmen, under the gallant leadership of general Molinié, had for four critical days contained no less than seven German divisions which otherwise could have joined in the assaults on the Dunkirk perimeter. This was a splendid contribution to the escape of their more fortunate comrades of the BEF" - Winston Churchill This is only a trailer but it does not bode well. There's a lot of bullshit being trolled on here! Firstly we haven't seen the film yet so nobody knows how the french or civilians are being depicted. Secondly, they were over 50,000 British troops that were fighting off the advancement to allow the evacuation, and thirdly over 100,000 french soldiers were evacuated by the British, who lived to fight again on D day. The battle of France was over, the french army had been routed half the french captains had been paid off and were collaborating under the Vichy regime....so what was Britain supposed to do? just leave a whole fucking army over there to defend a country who's own army had already given in, or bring them back to help defend an impending invasion of Britain!

Same problem as BF 1 ! Seems to be historically very inaccurate, maybe a good movie but very inaccurate. After being defeated, the remaining of the british, belgium, french army and some canadian troups withdraw to Dunkerque. While the french were holding around 800000 german troops that were surrounding them, the royal air force, the french air force, the royal navy, the french navy, the dutch navy and many courageous civilians organized the withdraw of british and canadian troops back to britain. After the departure of 198000 brithish an canadian troops, around 100000 french troops left ( at last), and 40 000 were captured or killed. Thank you hollywood for giving an inaccurate picture of history (as usual). Some people will enjoy it as entrertainement only, but many will think that it is accurate and will get this movie as an exact picture of what happened during the war.

Much different from today, today they protest on the streets without knowing what the hell they're protesting about, burn their own flags, destroy their own streets, fail to communicate and engage with those with differing views and accuse the older generations such as those whom fought and sacrificed in WWII, of ruining their future. They're called Social Justice Warriors, Generation Snowflakes, Champagne Socialists... Scumbags.

The British plan for a large scale evacuation of their troops from continental Europe (such a plan that was needed at Dunkirk) depended on the security of docks at the evacuation site. In other words, all of the boats and ships used in the evacuation program couldn't land on beaches. This was a problem because the Luftwaffe (the German Air Force) were raining down hell on the docks at Dunkirk. So in leau of that, thousands apon thousands of British civilians (whether commercial fishermen or fathers and their sons (like the pair in this trailer) who just decided to go out for a morning fish) traveled accross the channel to pick up as many troops as they possibly could. Completely of their own volition. Around 25% of those civilians died. Jessica is right though, if only men today had the same balls as our forebears.
