Been playing this for a few days now. My personal hack is to have one person play as the dungeon master. This works out better and makes play smoother especially if you are playing with kids. I play the DM and tell a short story for the kids as each encounter happens. They love it and and it keeps them off the Xbox for a couple hours

I bought this just to have because I like nerdy things and thought maybe us as a family could play together. I haven't played dnd in 25 years. My wife never has and hated the idea of doing nerdy things. My 5 year old daughter is up for anything that looks cool. We kinda changed the rules and I played as just the dm weaving a story together as we went. This game brought us together and we had so much fun. My 5 year old absolutely loved it. The fun I had creating a story and embellishments of their descitions and adventure cards. We laughed and were amused the whole time. Alot of fun. Im glad I purchased this and put the effort in. My daughter repeatedly asks to play. Just change it up. Be the dm and feed off the adventure cards and spin a funny tale for your children. Im glad I purchased this. It took me back and inspired me to just have fun again pretending. Thank you for this video it helped alot.

I'm all for more people playing DnD. If a more simplified version of them introduces them to the game, I am all for that. If people are negative about this it's because they forgot how daunting learning this game can be. Those of us from the thac0 era understand that this is like HeroQuest. An easily accessable entry into the genre.

Been playing D&D for a few years now and wanted to show my wife and my 9-yo daughter what the heck dad was doing every week. They love playing it! And they now understand the basic mechanics. I do freestyle a bit, playing as DM myself and doing some extra world building. Creative decisions or attacks get a harder difficulty when throwing their D20's and critical fails get dramatic results. Next step would be drawing my own map and going off-world. It's some cool little additions like this that add an extra dimension.

  • @johnmojica4381

Just ordered this to introduce myself and my kids to Dungeons and Dragons. I’m fairly familiar with it from listening to The Adventure Zone, and I’m loving the idea that my kids can participate and get used to the idea so that when they’re a bit older, we can attack some real campaigns. A great idea, and a low entry price-point. Well done WotC

We bought this 3 days ago. It's fun and easy to learn. We play it with our 10yo. I highly recommend it because it's detailed enough to be intriguing and quick enough to keep the younger kids focused. We really like how the more complex games (like D&D, Catan, etc) are making pared-down family versions. The investment is reasonable to start learning how to play before upgrading to the more intricate boards. Thank you for this tutorial too.

It looks actually much better than what I would have thought. The prompts for actual roleplay is a nice touch to introduce new players and the fact that the DM change each turn too is a great idea. I'm not even a D&D player (I love OSR RPGs yet like DCC, The Black Hack, etc) but I may consider buying this boardgame for super casual play sometimes with friends totally new into RPGs.

This is great. I've always like d&d, watching other people play on KZread. But never got to try it, because my country it seems hard to find any friends to play board games. And I'm just too busy to go to a game shop. And they mostly play mtg anyway. I tried learning by myself with some tutorial vids and stuff but it's all too complication without a real person guide. I have no idea what I'm doing more than half the time since I need to be the dm and player at the same time playing by myself. This one will serve well to actually try out.

I am interested in checking it out. More geared toward children and people who literally have no idea what D&D is. I hope not all the DM cards are like “Do a silly dance” or “Say a word that rhymes with ‘boat.” Those cards can be for younger kids. Id rather have cards where players a make a decision based on their abilities. Kinda like the encounter cards in Eldritch Horror. Overall, the price is reasonable and gentle gateway to an even bigger, unlimited world of D&D.

This game clearly tries to emulate Gloomhaven, and has much more limited replay-ability than the other games of this variant. Enemies always appear in the same order, making for redundant repetitive play, with limited end results, as well it tries to be about "storytelling" which misses the point of D&D. If people are going to try so fervently to remake HeroQuest, then HASBRO has the power to do so, while removing the GW connection, just remaking HeroQuest board game with a new name and without Citadel miniatures. This game proves the ability to make the minis is within HASBRO's power, so they just need to design a new "map" board, and replace Zargon/Morcar with the DM name of their choice.. how about Halaster Blackcloak, and make an endless dungeon out of Undermountain to replicate HeroQuest with? Then you have the HeroQuest gameplay with fully owned HASBRO IP, without trying to be other board games, and it keeps to D&D rather than being some fake storytelling apparatus. For the price of this thing and only able to play it about 4~8 times before it repeats itself, it is very poorly thought out. This concept would have been better for a mobile app like that Tomb of Annihilation game.

Pretty sure all RPGs are about storytelling. This board game misses the point of that by forgoing the storytelling aspect affecting the outcome. It's a railroad.

@@commandercaptain4664 "Pretty sure all RPGs are about storytelling." No, they are not, and this is a systemic problem in modern gamers that think so. Some are made specifically for telling stories, while others are abused for that purpose by people who have no other idea how how to play them, or who blindly think Critical Role and the trash that Matt Mercer does is what RPGs are about. Trying to force this ONETRUEWAY onto people, is just bigotry towards people who wish to play another way than yourself. RPGs, and D&D itself exist to allow you to explore fantasy worlds and take part in them instead of just reading a "story" like you find in a book. For some that means fighting giant armies, or solving puzzles, but no one way is the right way for everyone, and anything that promote there is only one correct way to play a TTRPG, unless the system is specifically made so that you can only play it one way, is just wrong and a disservice to all games and gamers. Like i said, this game takes one small vocal group on Twitch as the example of what the entirety of D&D is an exponentially tries to enforce that as the right way to play D&D, which causes problems outside of the Twitch and KZread universe where real people play the game of D&D. Nothing wrong with this clone of Gloomhaven existing, but calling it D&D rather than saying it is D&D inspired is a tarnishing of the point of D&D. A board game can never represent D&D anymore than a video game can. The sad truth is this thing will be used as an "introduction" to RPGs which will give false views of what to expect since it is nothing but a board game, and not an RPG.

I agree with everything you said about this board game except for when you said D&D isn't about story telling, it's always been about story telling since the white box. The DM gives the setting and the general plot whereas the players drive the story by the actions of the protagonists. It's always been a story telling game, even in the most basic dungeon delve from the earliest beginnings. The DM and players are co-authors of the story..

@@Fnordathoth You might want to read the white box again "Fantastic Medieval Wargame" its a dungeon crawler. the fact people attempted to add story-telling is their own doing, and Gary himself tried to steer away from that and told people flat out it was NOT about story telling. Neither Gary nor Dave created a game for story-telling, they created adventure games with D&D that would continue play from one game to the next. What else they created outside of D&D has no bearing on D&D itself, and WotC are the ones that added "story-telling" as a descriptor in an attempt to avoid the Satanic Panic resurgence when Demons and Devils were added back to the game in their editions.

I have a copy of the white box and yeah, D&D in it's infancy was a dungeon crawler but Arnesen definitely was telling a story with Blackmoor and Gygax likewise created the world of Greyhawk with and for OD&D. For either of then to say story wasn't intended by either of them is disingenuous at best.

Looks like 4E resurrected as something more "Essential". What's really needed is a Starter Set for how to DM, to show how unscary being a DM is (and no, the DMG doesn't cut it). 3:30 "Players must engage in actual physical activity and be judged Apples vs. Apples style" RUH ROH. 😴 3:48 Rolling the... What? Whaddya mean no fumble in this game? I NEED TO SPEAK TO YOUR MANAGER." 7:15 "For every point of damage the hero inflicted"... You mean, subtract from the HP shown instead of reversing the numbers to track any actual damage? I HAVE TO DO MATH?? *table flip* 7:47 Instruction booklet: If the DM says how much damage you've taken, DO MATH to track your HP instead of tracking damage. 7:51 Players: Are we flanking for extra damag- / DM: NO! AGAIN. The inanimate object is tired and needed to rest up from being inanimate. Can we replay the last three boards? 9:34 "... that all the players can read anyway, because they can see the winning story." Welp, guess I'm buying this... 😣

This game looks terrible. They should've just made a game that used the map building and monster AI from the Dungeons and Dragons board game series they did (Castle Ravenloft/Rise of Ashaldon) and the leveling and scenario systems of the Dragonfire card game. The encounter mechanic and leveling system from the original board games sucked but the board building mechanic and monster AI were good. This game is a useless product.

Totally agree, the Board Game versions of Dungeons and Dragons are a nice way to get into Full blown Dungeons and Dragons (using minis) like *D&D: Dragon Quest* and the others did in the early years (The more recent board games still can't beat those.. except for the minis) Adventure begins though.. it's too simplified and minimized.. But, considering the price range... Sadly, just like with videogames and its RPGs, its all being simplified to make it mainstream, but these changes always seem to become permanent. Not everything has to become mainstream.

this seemed like a simplified version to you? The D&D I play, everything is done in 3 steps. 1. DM describes something, person, place, event, action 2. We describe what we want to do in response to Step 1. 3. DM decides if a roll is needed. If so, we roll and then its back to step 1.
