@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 I know this is an older video, but I just discovered this channel, so I'm going through several topics at once. Character death can be a great role playing device if the players choose to use it. One of my favorite groups I've ever run kept track of the characters in their graveyard. By the end of the campaign, there were fifteen characters who had died adventuring with the party. By a strange happenstance, many of the characters in the graveyard were elves, and it got to the point where the paladin and party leader dreaded seeing elves show up with that magic PC glow about them. She had a prepared speech for any elf that wanted to join and would actively try to dissuade them from joining the party. The yeoman fighter in the party didn't even want to know their names. He imagined for his character, it was like someone who had served from D-Day to Bastogne, and how they might treat fresh-faced replacements straight from basic training and stateside. So character death can be one device for the players as they take their characters from flat to round.

@@OjoRojo40 i actually do want death to be a possibiliity. the percentage question is misleading: however large or small that number is is down to how well players play. It could be zero if the players plan and reconnoitre and procure information that saves their skin. It's pretty condescending for you to assume that when people say "I want character death to be a possibility" you think "they don't actually want that" and then misleadingly equate possibility to inevitability. of course a high danger campaign does not mean players want character to die every session- only that it is a real and actual possibility instead of being cushioned by DM fiat. and for the record, no I do not want resurrection to be a possibility unless a truly astronomical cost is asked for (going to hell to retrieve their soul, making a bargain with the judges of the dead, coupled with an astronomical monetary or 'quest price'.

Because life is so precious, one should think about what actions they should take to ensure long life. Death is inevitable. The game uses dice to tell the story, they should also determine the outcome as well. If the monsters could not die the characters would complain about it, thinking it was unfair. The balance is that both should have the potential to die, as the die rolls will determine the outcome! That is why the game has dice!!!

When their characters hit the bottom 2 failed their con saves, hitting rocks below. we rolled up new characters and they buried their bodies. 2 months later they traveled back to the tree and it became a nice role-playing moment. steeling themselves for the adventure ahead. turned out well and they liked the new characters better

I finished playing in a campaign where the GM brought our characters to level 20. It was three solid years, from level 3 to level 20 and our journey was, as so many players' miseries are, because of a self-inflicted screw-up. At level 4, when our characters were still wet behind the ears, one of our score broke the glass staff of a powerful wizard, who was helping an incredibly powerful, millennia-old man to perform a spell that would cover the world in an anti-magic field and shunt the material away from the other planes. In the end, my paladin used his last action to damage the tip of the rock ledge hanging over a chasm to try and disrupt the ritual that would begin this change. The big bad personally killed him with a flurry of blows and the rest of the party then killed him in turn, after the ledge crumbled and the ritual was successfully disrupted. My paladin was the only casualty of that fight and when the group tried to resurrect him, all they got was a hearty goodbye because my character wanted to remain by Bahamut's side. Enjoying a few decades of rest, before becoming an archangel to fight against the demons and devils, locked as they are in the ongoing Blood War. To protect all kindred, for the rest of his existence in Bahamut's realm. I couldn't ask for a better end.

I like the idea of offering the player a _lucky break_ that can save their lives or give them the help they need in the same improbable ways you see in movies (maybe no XP if they use it to cheat death). But the trick is, they’re always balanced by an _unlucky break_ sometime in the future (when you need them captured or you need the villain to escape). And if you start with an _unlucky break_ the players know they’re owed a favor they can call in later.

Nicholas Meyer, in his commentary for Star Trek 2, talking about the death of Spock says, "It isn't if you kill him, it's if you kill him well" and while it's unrealistic to expect every death of a PC to be an epic moment (accidents happen at the whim of the dice), you do wish that the Player gets something from the death. They may go through an 'Achilles in the tent' time, where they're afraid of getting their snout bruised. And from that learn that life's too short to brood. Or they may learn, as the French at Agincourt, the foibles of overprotecting oneself vs maneuverability. If they can get through these times, in game, then maybe they'll take more risks in real life, recover quicker when they do. *shrug* As Arthur says in Excalibur, "It is a dream I have"

I did make homebrew immortal rules for mork borg, when a character dies they awaken with a cruel debuff like (In d20 hours their eyes will bleed out and kill them) or their blood is thin and they will bleed out fast every 1D4 rounds. I made it somewhat Dark souls-inspired making it so immortality wasn't a gift, but a curse.

Great video as always, really like the old-school style of play you advocate. I think character death is at it's most palatable if players make a series of bad choices that lead to their character's death, so when they think about it afterwards they can admit to themselves it wasn't totally random chance (which feels unfair) but mostly their mistakes.

@@OjoRojo40 I think the problem stems from kids today using the game as wish fulfillment and graphting their hopes and dreams onto a table top role playing character. It's a game. Where you kill lots of things. For there to be no real danger and occasional death for the pcs cheapens the experience and it become something other than a game. It's a game. You sometimes lose in a game. If you project yourself into your wizard character that's how you end up in a tunnel under the school or on a roof thinking you can fly. Darkest dungeon indeed

I'll hate to lose him, but ohh have I got the epic story for him to use it when the time comes. It'll trap him, but also everyone else beyond him, for long enough for the party to flee to safety. When it wears off, the boss monster will be there, it'll be him and the boss. If he dies, it will be an epic death and sacrifice at the hands of a foe greater than any of the party. If he's to survive, it'll be a mad, desperate flight to safety against impossible odds. Either way, it's going to be a wild time.

I love this channel and you look a bit like Alan Rickman. I softened up on my players. Initially there wouldn't be any revival methods, save from serums from the Philosopher's Stone, but so many players left and new ones came to the table... Only one close friend is here from the beginning, and when the cleric (a new and excellent player) said "Well, I have Revive, but we should not play around it", I didn't interrupt to say "The only revives are serums provided by the Philosopher's Stone and no more", as these serums costed a king's ransom and they almost got a party wipe getting one. Things worked actually really well for a long time, they always had a blast with the combat and only once did they use a Revive spell to counter a stupid decision they made with the fighter of another player that couldn't come that day. But now I see they are starting to get a bit bored with their characters, so a bit of death can be used, but there is a complicating factor: Everyone, myself included, is deeply invested in the story I am creating, and this story is a very well guarded secret involving the nature of the gods and why they left that world around 2000 years prior to the adventurers' time. They LOVE putting everything together, since precise information about that period is now scarce and often incomplete. So my fear (and theirs as well) is when they get a party wipe they will have new characters that they desire, but will not (or will take too long to) experience that world lore depth again with the new characters. Does any of you ever experienced that? I feel like I'm in a corner.

About the lore depth, they can left journals/books/artifacts, take apprentices who will pass their teachings to new adepts, build or ally with organizations focused on their values or become legends so the bards will tell their tales for new PC's. Making the acquired knowledge and bonds more accessible for other characters.

You seem very experienced and very good at explaining and articulating your advice. I would recommend splitting your channel into two separate "shows"....a craft show and an advice show. I think learning how you prep for a session, how you organize your notes, what tools you use when DMing would all be great things to learn. I have seen really good DMs get a lot of viewership on prepping their weekly session on youtube to show the exact train of thought. You could do a campaign where each week you discuss what went on in your campaign and so forth. Their is a wealth of knowledge here and a serious lack of professional DMs like yourself giving it. Matt Colville is running the DM youtube space and I think you are a breath of fresh air. Obviously you do whatever you want and have time for, dont think im preaching a "what you should do" list.... just would love to see more content!

Yea weekly could be too much. I would just start a growing list of topics and go at it at your own pace. So im a researcher by nature and I try to learn from anyone and anything that will teach me to be better at my trade. I have watched just about every dnd youtuber I can find and to be honest most of them are all the same. They reach for low hanging fruit like "tips for new DMs" ...jeez I swear if I see another tip for new DM video or blog post im gonna throw up.... We get it dont railroad your players! Then we have the DM tips from geek and sundry which are all vague instruments of yet more advice.....All of it is helpful but only at a surface level. What the community needs is someone who teaches "how to" not advice. A great example is your adventure, where you walk us through a sample adventure. This is actionable content that I can use in my game. It shows me through example how you quickly construct a story. Another one is the removing initiative. As a fellow game designer I can see how it solves one of the largest problems with dnd and that is slow boring combat! Capping out HP to keep the game lethal, this is all good stuff that no one is talking about. No innovation or fresh ideas. I want to see a DM of a high caliber, walk through a session prep. Like, open up whatever tool you use for prepping, and go through your mindset. Critical Role is a stream that shows people the game being played, but where is the stream that shows the DM how the inner workings of a campaign is crafted. I wanna know how you weave character stories into your campaign arcs. I wanna know how you prep a first session campaign. I want to be walked through how you prepare a boss fight and how you take notes and prep for that boss fight. I want to know how you get players to communicate more with each other. You see Matt Mercer looks great on stream because he has great players, but what if you are one of us normal folk who need to push their players a bit more. How would I setup a campaign around political intrigue? Dont tell me how....show me how....Open up the one note doc and illustrate to me as you prep. Just like you said crafting is easy because you just turn on the camera and craft....turn on the camera and prep a campaign out loud just like you would if you were alone. There is so much room for great DMs like yourself to educate other DMs out there, and a vast open void in youtube where someone could swoop in and grow a channel. I know this is long winded but there is such a wealth of things you could show and I for one would love to hear some of it! :D

I appreciate the thoughtful response. I'm trying to make my channel different and I need to know what's missing from the other channels. Others DungeonCraft viewers have asked me for the same suggestion--watching me prep. I'm not sure about prepping my game out loud as if I was alone---it would look really insane. I ramble and talk to myself--mostly in my car while driving to work. However, I'm starting a new campaign this weekend so I will film some stuff and turn it into an episode. Political intrigue, BTW, is tough. It takes a LOOOONG time to set up. People need to care about the world before they can get involved in the machinations of kingdoms--IMHO. When I start a campaign I don't have any preconceived notions about how long it's going to be or where the characters are going. I never assume there will be a session #2. Thanks for the advice and I'll do the best I can.

good vid... Though I think there is a nuance for genre: i.e. monster hearts or superheroes, where the fail conditions an negative beats are less based around damage an death. That said this is hardly a point of detriment, as the aesthetic an examples makes the genre we are talking about clear :) I would say my experience w/ the DCC funnel did not go well as my players did not enjoy the experience, so the morale here is that the funnel can be the rpg version of coffee some love it an others find it a bitter experience. A fun way to make pc death more interactive is to ask about the characters burial an specifically their grave goods. The practice of burying a person with grave goods was practiced in various cultures across the real world. This would provide the players a opportunity to express their thoughts on the character with a dramatic scene an maybe drain some of that treasure.

I recognize how, as a player, it's more fun to have a character that can be the team action hero in combat, but Soren is so much stronger than the rest of the party, no fight is a challenge. I use your method of battle, ditching intitiaves in favor of something more chaotic, and as soon as Soren let's off two hits, the battle is over. On the other hand, if I set up an encounter that will actually challenge Soren and make a fight last, the enemy is much too strong for the rest of the party and will wipe them all out in two hits. Dealing with this character is making it difficult to set up balanced altercations in the campaign. As a DM, what's the best way to address this issue the next time I see it coming up? P.S. Thank you for taking the time to make your videos. I've been running my first campaign as a DM and your advice has helped so much.

Darien Smartt this is my two cents, start a conversation with the group to see how everyone is feeling? if everyone is still having fun then in the end it isn't a problem. if he is outshining the other characters it may mean having a one on one conversation. where you talk about how the group is having less fun and instead would like to work together more. mechanics you can employ are controlling when they can rest, or buffing the other characters gradually with magic items to help them survive the stuff "siren" can be challenged with, or throw different types of encounters/ antimagic spheres the players have to break, or challenge sorens weak stats... in the end the most important thing is to throw in things the players find interesting and make sure each player gets that moment to shine. That's just my two cents

Darien, this is an excellent question. It's SO good that it's the subject of my next video, which I will write and shoot today. Expect it later this month or early July (I am about to go weekly with the uploads, at least for the summer) and I am going to give you a shout out. In brief, I replace the magic system with something more magical. I also HIGHLY recommend "Tracy Hickman's XDM: Extreme Dungeon Mastery" for you. Order it today. It's worth it.

I'm okay with character death, but the issue I run into is that when I play I end up investing a lot into a character and if they die it takes a lot for me to create a new character (as I'm much more logical and technical than creative), and it also doesn't feel right to look into the same world through a new set of eyes. Others can do this, but I can't, and I respect that even though I don't understand how they can do it as easily as they do. That's how I view character death. If my character dies that ends my involvement in the campaign, and I've explained this to the DMs I have had so far. This isn't by any means an attempt to prevent the DM from allowing my player to be killed off, so I don't want to be accused of that, but even though I'm bad at role playing, I do try to insert myself into the character to try to think like they would think and act like they would act, and I value the life of that character enough to make it feel wrong to invest in a new one. That's become part of the role play experience for me, and if you disagree that's fine, I don't expect anyone to agree as I'm probably the only one who has this view, but if I'm asked to play in something that's intended to be a campaign I make that known. This is probably why I enjoy one shots more than campaigns. Once it's over that's it.

An iron man rpg run. One shot at life. I’m sure the other players feel it more when a player disappears after the character dies. Older games have quicker character generation. And if you use henchmen you have a lieutenant that knows generally the same things your PC knows as a back up.

This reminds me of a campaign set in the White Wolf Trinity Continuum. The players could play Psions, superhumans with psychic powers. In the past, there were god like superheroes, novas, who were idolized until they went crazy. After America was devastated, China threatened to nuke the planet unless the superbeings left. The players were superhuman, but they were still easily killable insects in comparison to the novas. I gave in game hints, and out of game explicit warnings that novas were there, and could kill them if they had the stupidity to fight them. I created novas who were members of a Nordic religion that was preparing for Ragnorok. They were given a chance to avoid where the villains were attacking. Also, the followers of that religion wore a necklace with a hammer because they worshiped a nova who had the delusion of being Thor. Out of character, I told them their powers and weapons were useless, and they should run for their lives to avoid them. My group ignored my warning and attacked them. Then they realized they could get killed. They barely escaped with their lives. One player quit at the end of that session, saying he hated my RPG system, and my world. Perhaps he never played a game with a real risk of death. At the age of 30 he had less maturity than those kids in the total party kill. The campaign fell apart a bit later after the rest of the players quit. It was my first campaign, and i made many mistakes. I should have never let that player who was the first to quit to even join my game because he was a terrible role player in every rpg he played before. He acted as if I would hurt his feelings if I did not invite him. Oh well, live and learn.

OK, so I've been catching up on your videos, and I've just got one main question: Why not take the SRD, redo it with your House Rules, and release it as your own system, or a supplement to D&D? I mean, no res is fine. That's absolutely perfect--permadeath is alright if your players know it's a thing. The rest? The hit point caps, the not really leveling, the adjusted damage ratios, the +7 stat block builds and whatnot, all that is also perfectly fine, but it's not really D&D at that point, is it? It's a Tabletop Fantasy Roleplay game, but I don't think you're playing D&D at that point. Or Pathfinder. Or whatever. You're playing your homebrew system (which is AWESOME), and I really think it'd be epic win if you'd release something hard copy with that idea in it so others can have it on paper in front of them to run a game with.

I’ve never understood rolling stats. In GURPS we pay xp for everything at creation. A 200 pt character may have a high strength and dexterity but they are not going to be able to have high stats in everything.

I had a bard back in AD&D, started off in the Forgotten Realms and ended up in the Planescape setting. The bard was Tn(e), and spent to much time in the Lower Planes. Any time that he would have died,, he just ended on on a ferryman's boat. Made a bunch of deals with Efreet fire genie for wishes to cheat True Death. After around a month's worth of play did our playing group realize that the DM had the characters move through time five times. " Why do all the ferrymen and ancient Lower Planers treat us with the look that we are ancient legendary people ?" Why does That demon wants us dead so bad, and why do Pit Fiends freely help us ? Pit Fiend: I am simply repaying a favor. Player A.: When did I do a favor for you and why did I do it.? Pit Fiend : just wait. Before a character started his adventuring he dug a deep pit and bury a lead box with a dozen silver coins to pay the ferryman and the god of death to look after his soul. "Whoa , whoa, who have I been working for the pass ten years ?"

After having lost 4 characters in my first 5 games of playing D&D, I had an epiphany... If D&D has magic and it doesn't let you evade death for a while, then why bother playing? NO, I don't think that characters need to be Wolverine and be unkillable, but if there is no way to bring a character that you have invested time and effort into back from the dead to let you continue playing them until their arc ends or you are ready to play another character, then why start playing the character in the first place? I get enough reality in the real world. I don't need it in my imaginary world. D&D is the place that lets you play out everything that your imagination can think of. If, as a DM you aren't going to allow a way to bring back a character that dies, then be sure to let the players know this in advance, and know that some players will look elsewhere for their games.

I disagree, I want players attached to their character, knowing the character is just expendable negates that. I don't NOT kill characters, but they won't die just because some random goblin got a lucky roll. Basically I play the characters won't die unless it's a major encounter or it's a situation they got themselves into. I understand adventuring is supposed to be deadly, if it was so easy everyone would do it etc, but the point of heroes is they are the ones that didn't die, that's what makes them special.
