Here on a socially-distanced New Years Eve 2020... 53yo, started playing D&D in 8th grade with the Holmes Basic Set. I have never been to GenCon so thanks for the video. Seeing so many people in one place without msks makes me really realize what we have lost this past year. Here is to a better 2021

This is a pretty cool idea to review the con for those of us who can't make it. Thanks! Also I agree it's a little baffling that WotC has dropped GenCon.

I've always wanted to go, but I never imagined it would be THAT expensive. Looks like it might be a decade before I can feasibly go with my wife. On the other hand, if anyone wants a few tidbits on the history of GenCon, Empire of Imagination is an excellent biography on Gary Gygax. If you don't know who Gary Gygax is, you should absolutely read the book. I say excellent because it's easy going and thorough so far as I can tell.

True dungeon is the best! I started volunteering for them, it's so much fun LARPing in a haunted house as a player and as a GM. Side bonus- I finally have a path to conventions like Gen Con with tickets, small stipend, true dungeon tokens, and a hotel room. If you're reading this Lori and Jeff, please pick me for next year, I always wanted to go to Gencon!

Believe it or not--I have never done True Dungeon. I tried to buy tickets last year but tickets sold out in the first couple hours while I was at work.

@@DUNGEONCRAFT1 Tickets are not cheap, but just as you said here, runs sell out, and then there are no shows, especially on Saturdays. Another route would be that They are always looking for volunteers, and you would probably appreciate how things are set up "behind the screen" so to speak.

I went from 2003 to 2014. The costs, crowds, and hassle finally outweighed the benefit for me. I saw Gen Con balloon from 20,000 to 60,000 attendees. 40,000 was the sweet spot, but after that, things just started becoming a chore. I now go to Origins as my big con. Gary Con, however, is my favorite.

I have a feeling that convention will continue to expand. We are living in the "Rise of the Cons" era. It's crazy how many there are and how many people they attract--which is a great problem to have.

If number 1 was in 1968 and every year there was a single GenCon, then 10 would have been in 1977. And 50 in 2017. Here you make what's called a fence post error: If you require one fence post every ten feet of straight fence, how many fence posts do you need for 40' of fence in a straight line? The answer is 5, of course, since you need two posts for the first 10' and one for each remaining 10'.

Hard to believe that Hasbro doesn't attend GenCon. A big mistake in my opinion.
