If your campaign has a tactical combat element, the position of your arbitrary geometry, squiggles/twists/turns/grottos, can have a huge effect on how a fight plays out in that corridor.

This video blew my mind a bit. As of today I have been playing and DMing for exactly 36 years (I got the Moldy Red Box set for my birthday in '81) and I would never have though to use a straight line dungeon. I will now though! Your enthusiasm has more than sold me on this concept and my Sunday group will definitely experience one soon. Thank you!

Great video! My crafting is heavily influenced by Hankerin, BMC, and DM Scotty. I find what works best for me is building dungeons and caves with 2D tiles, using the negative space as implied sold space and for encounters I build in the outside world, such as forests or mountains, I use the positive space approach.

I was thinking while watching the straight line dungeon how it can be abstracted. Basically, there's no reason that in the descriptions the tunnel can't be twisting - perhaps if if it's a natural cavern etc. BUT on the table, the tiles can all be straight until the party comes to a branching path. I think of it in the same context as the character miniatures: they are place holders for a much more detailed mental image. If there's a sharp turn, you describe it. When the turn is rounded, you then place the next straight tile because the line of sight is no longer blocked. In the meantime, you don't need to have a bunch of oddly shaped tiles that might not fit correctly and instead you can improv the dungeon utilizing different DETAILS on tiles with the confidence that it all fits together on the table. It really is kind of like playing a sidescroller - Mario obviously doesn't operate by moving only left and right. Some of the world is abstracted for mechanical simplicity

Another benefit to negative design versus positive is that of visibility. Walls restrict visibility and make the battlefield harder to comprehend at a glance. So I design in 2.5D to prevent everyone at the table standing up every few minutes to get a better look at whats going on, and because I often have someone skyping in so it makes the camera angles easier.

With regard to the "dressing" there are a lot of situations where you would want both the tiles and walls. Mainly where you would have massive areas where there wouldn't be walls, but there would be a walkable space. Platforms, cliff edges, and the like. Hell, something like a city in the trees or built on platforms over a swamp...or just partially flooded. The walls show where there are actual walls while the void is areas where there aren't, but the place isn't the place to get off of the platforms.

This reminds me of the session I had nothing planned due to my schedule. It was a long repeating cavern that was a straight line basically. They noticed figures ahead of them rushing through the tunnel ahead on their 2nd time through it while being chased by ogres. It took them about 5 times to realize every time they went through a door it reset. They turned around and see what appears to be them coming in at the opposite door. They team up and beat the ogres then proceeded to fight themselves because one of the players decided there can only be one Tarako the Destroyer. It was a drink fueled, doctor who-esque time paradox thing that just kinda happened on the fly and I had no idea how to resolve it once we got there lol Since thy were fighting their younger version I had any damage affect them as well in the form of cuts and burns show up but seem to be hours old wounds.

Scotty from DM's Craft invented the 'implied' walls tile construction, but made most pieces unique, set-pieces. He calls it 2.5D. I'm more of a fan of theDMG method, as his tiles are standard 'modular' pieces from cardboard, glue sticks and cheap craft paint. I've constructed an entire set (about 80 pieces), in a weekend, and now use them every game session.

Hi Hank, this video has lured me into asking a question, as a long time quiet watcher, but first a ranting to explain where the question is coming from. My brother bought Wrath of Ashardalon, which had a cool dungeon randomizing mechanic. Basically the dungeon tiles (negative space) were cards and when you approached the end of a tile you would draw a new card out. This would progress the dungeon. Perhaps this is standard to D&D? I would not know as I have never actually played D&D (a sad truth). However, I thought this mechanic was neat, specifically since fate (and to some extent the players choices) were responsible for creating the dungeon. Wrath of Ashardalon does not have a DM, but recently I home-brewed a version of this with cardboard terrain (unpainted and ugly). I included the DM component (which I feel makes the game better). I found it quite fun. I plan to eventually get into crafting once my situation/life becomes more stable (if ever it does haha) but I want to keep this mechanic. I also included your TTT theme (Timer, Threat, Treat). At any rate, I wanted to ask what your thoughts on randomized dungeons, like Wrath of Ashardalon, are? I think Negative space has the ability to do this but I don't see many DMs designing dungeons (not encounters because calling them "encounters" is lame) this way. I suppose it is the lazy DMs method but I found it fun, and so did my players (which were my kids hehe). Have you experience with this? Also on an aside, I think changing the channels name was a good choice as it does not restrict or take away from what you do, instead it opens up more possibilities and does not confine you to just drunken youtubery. I think it will allow you to expand creatively and career-wise, for that I commend your bravery as it is challenging to change branding after so long. Ignore any negative comments you receive - it was a good choice! I actually think "Runehammer" is a much better name. Cheers, Charles

I've always thought about this, but in opposite use of positive/negative. With each wall I add to a play board I take space away from the players...negative. With each 2.6d tile I lay I'm adding space for the players...positive. I'm a simpleton though.
