60 Years of DUNE! The Whole Story Never Told Before!

Ойын-сауық

The Spice Must Flow. It’s a quote Dune fans know well. Second perhaps only to He who controls the spice controls the universe, although most fans will be surprised to learn that neither of those quotes are found in Frank Herbert’s original books. This video explains the entire history of DUNE, the books, the movies, leading up to Dune: Part Two!

Also, Dune was quite cynical and bleak in its outlook of humanity, with not so good people toppling worse people while using natives and their religion to their advantage. All the while his LOTR was a fantastic heroic tale with a happy ending. Er, and Glen Close WAS the love interest for Robert Redford's Roy Hobbs. The one that shot him was Barbara Hershey.

But I doubt even Tolkien could deny that historically what Herbert observed about how religions have been used in human history was accurate. Herbert never outright said Catholicism is false. But, even Tolkien would admit, most religions are false and used for political and social control-His only refutation would have been that his faith, Catholicism, was true.

It was Kim Basinger who went on to put a bullet into Robert Redford's character in "The natural", not Glenn Close. Glenn Close's character played Robert Redford's long lost love interest. Just saying. :-)

I’ve first read Dune when I was 15 and have been re-reading the book roughly every 2 years since then. I’m now… actually never mind that. The point is this is a pretty solid piece. And I was actually ready not to like it because of the use of the word “franchise” but no, this is extremely well researched (I learned quite a bit actually which, of course, I didn’t think I would). I subscribe. Kudos kids! (I said never mind that…)

Rebecca Ferguson has never read the novel. She confirmed this again on Colbert last month. The film didn´t win Best Picture either. It infamously only won Below The Line Oscars and wasn´t up for a prestigious award, like Best Director or any of the action categories.

In the Colbert interview she does confirm she hasn't finished the book. “By the way, I did read the book,” she told Colbert. “I haven’t finished it…I tried reading this book, it’s hard, it’s dense.” What we say in the video is "After seeing Villenueve's vision and reading the novel..." We didn't feel it necessary to say she didn't finish it as she read enough to understand her character. Hopefully that clears things up.

@Mentorman63 Yes, I was very disappointed. Another thing that warned me that things were going woke. In the book, there are two types of Freemen, City and Desert. In Denis's movie, there are also two types of Freemen, North and South. The North are very perceptive, not religious, not superstitious, sensible, the "Bible Belt." Southern fundamentalists are dangerous and superstitious, easily excited to violence and war. It's an obvious analogy of the USA by a lefty Canadian. "Those stupid Americans will never catch on." The North is our liberal cities, and the South is our South and mid-west. North=smart and sensible. South & mid-west=love the Bible and are of low intelligence.

There is still knife fighting. And the Sci-Fi mini series was very close to the book with the best version of the Baron Harkonen. He was very clever in the book. I do hope I’m wrong about Dune 3, but I think woke is the plan. Just the 6 Frank Herbert books, his son’s 20 or so are bad. I listened to a few on audio books. Cash Grab.

Tolkien actually was an anti-colonialist himself-He even mourned the fact that the United Kingdom had a crushing affect on Scottish, Welsh, and Irish languages and cultures-And he lamented the subsumption of his own native England and English culture into the artificial British Empire and United Kingdom-Read Lord of The Rings and you’ll find echoes of Old English, the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, Wales and Scotland. Tolkien also mourned the effect the British Empire had on third world lands and folk. When it comes to colonialism, Herbert and Tolkien were aligned. Where the men fiercely split, was on religion. It’s role, it’s truth, it’s past, and it’s future.

This is not the finally realised screen adaptation, not unless you're drinking the kool aid. There were directions Villeneuve took the movie which were far away from the book. Jessica's scheming to make Paul accept his destiny. Chani's secular stance verged on insolence. Most importantly, where is the spacing guild? It was their intervention which pre-empted any retaliation from the houses, choam and the gesserit's. No, Dune remains unfilmable,.

WHY people are calling this version so great is BEYOND me because the actors (with the exeption of Mamoa) seem to be so damn boring. THe 1984's acting cast is FAR superior to this movie's and even the SCi-Fi's version had more interesting characters. Sorry Dune but Christopher Walken can't save you......because he's not playing Christoper Walken and his real acting chops are being restrained. The Patric Stewart Gurney Haleck is FAR superior :) nuff said?

Personally, I loved both of these versions of it. I'm not a huge fan of camp though, and go for the slower paced historic or historic based genre stuff so the very real feel world building easily won me over, and I find the subtle acting exceptional for the HD film close ups. I agree that in a play they would be considered less exciting for sure, but with film close ups I end up enjoying the subtle acting more than the stage acting style. I'm glad you have a version of this story on screen that you enjoyed so well though, it's wonderful when that happens for you. I do really like the Everything Great About Dune Cinemawins video on that film.
