Fremen are prohibited from crying. From young ages they are flogged if they cry or, especially, if they leave their Siech without a still suit. Reason being as adults if they do such things the penalty is up to death. His watery eyes mean an incredible amount if you have read the books; even if you have not, great job noticing one of the best (and most subtly important parts) of the film. What an awesome story.

Stilgar is that warrior priest looking for an answer to a question that could save his people. A leader willing to do anything if it meant his people can be saved. I think in some ways he knows the cost of the coming of the Lisan al Gaib but he doesn’t care. His people will be safe and have a chance to fight back. That’s all that matters. As it is written

Well at the same time even though its a self-fulfilling prophecy propagated by the benegesserit. Paul has shown he can and he did deliver. Not only liberating Arrakis but conquering it for the freeman. I think Stilgar genuinely believed that Paul would liberate Arrakis and save his people. However, whether or not he actually believes in the prophecy like a religion or he just believes in Paul as a leader is up for debate. Even though it’s a lie, the prophecy still came true.

Yes. Besides all his genuine bravery, empathy and capability of caring, Paul has also clearly consciously and unconsciously manipulated the Fremens through his words and leveraging the Bene Gesserit prophecy. He tested water with this in his brief speech to Liet-Kynes in Part One, and did it to the fullest in Part Two. Stilgar can definitely be seen as a victim of his manipulation.

I remember everyone chuckling and me knowing how it ends, recalling a line from the books where Paul is thinking how he is losing Stilgar as a friend as he becomes a believer. Of course it makes less sense in the movies considering they compressed 4-5 years into 6-7 months but still an amazing performance.

@nj_purple9451 your brain has been ruined if you find her attractive above normal... but even then she has a "Water-Fat" face, the Fremen are a slender/gaunt people whose faces don't have chubby cheeks. It's literally one of their worst insults to use for outsiders... her goblina face of being all muddled doesn't really work even in comparison to other goblinas like Beyonce or Halle Berry who managed to still look like White women that just happened to be dipped in woodstain. They retained that high cheekbone & strong jawline beauty that somehow a bunch of chicks have decided to turn themselves into circus freaks trying to replicate with that buccal fat removal cosmetic surgery. That's just the physical failure of Zendeya being cast in the role... the role is just awful and goes against what the movie is showing to the audience. Dune is already going down the same route as Starship Troopers where the mass audience is going to react positively to the beauty & belief when it's intended to be a mockery of that. Chadi was changed to be what we the audience reaction to what's happening in the story... when the reality is that the overwhelming majority of people are going to be with Stilgar. The audience isn't leaving the movie being upset about Paul being a "messiah" who is going to burn the galaxy in a Holy War... we are sad that we don't have a messiah to follow who we would burn the galaxy in a Holy War for.

This probably wasn't the way it was in the books, but in the movie it seemed like Stilgar didn't really start out as a believer and remained a skeptic but only spread the faith anyways because it was a means to an end in helping gather support for fighting off the Harkonnen. However, over time he slowly started to believe his own lies until in the end when Paul began reading the minds of the Southern tribe, at which point he had become a full on zealot! It felt like a significant moment because by him fully embracing Paul as the Lisan al gaib, it makes you as the audience also fully believe he has become it, raising the stakes for the rest of the movie and accepting that Paul has become a whole new person after drinking the water of life. It is bittersweet also since at the same time Chani becomes the only one not disillusioned by this new Paul and she realizes she has lost her old friend/lover for good

Stilgar was ALWAYS a believer since he was a Southern Fundamentalist who had moved up North to fight against the Harroken... he was surrounded by the Northern non-believers that he was leading his belief being one of the things that motivated them to follow him in the first place. Kinda like in Hacksaw Ridge how nobody wanted to do another attack on Hacksaw without Desmond Doss there with them... his belief was so true and so profound that the men around him might not believe in it like he does but they do believe that HE believes. It's Faith as a second operation effect... they might not really believe as an article of Faith but seeing someone real who does have that Faith is something that they can have Faith in. Stilgar is nothing without his Faith irrelevant to Paul coming to actually fulfill the prophecy or not.

However over the course of Dune 2 we see him devolve into religious fanatic seeing the signs of Lisan al Gaib everywhere. You might think Stilgar is kinda funny and goofy when he shouts "Lisan Al-Ghaib" every time Paul does anything, especially when it comes to their beliefs and faith. But, for me, it's kind of ironic how a leader can be such a 'mindless' follower when it comes to everything he believed and all of the doctrine he got when he grew up. Because I can literally see this in my country lately, especially around the presidential election in February. Some people believed that one of the candidates was somewhat like "Lisan Al-Ghaib"; and unlike Dune, it's not even the truth. They're using religion and faith for political benefits and a polarized mass. I'm not against Stilgar tho, he's still one of my favorite characters in Dune. He's such a potrayal of an experienced and powerful leader/veteran.

I guess this character became a mashup of two characters - Stilgar and Korba - and became this... well, simplified and different kind of Stilgar. I watched the movie in cinema as someone who read all the Dune books years ago and was prepared NOT to compare the two things (book and movie) but maaan this was different... So after 20 min I was just leting it go and enjoyed it as a Dune themed reinvented blockbuster. Because this is what it is. And for that, its a cool movie

Yes, I find movie/show adaptations always have to be enjoyed as a reinvention/spinoff of the original text.

Stilgar is both a beautiful and tragic character. He had absolute faith that Paul was fated to be his people saviour. And in his faith he created his own messiah, he taught all that Paul needed to know to become Lisan al-Gaib. The faith in the prophecy made him both strong and weak, unwavering and fragile, it gave him and his people the will to resist the worst the Harkonen could trow at them, but made them vulnerable to the machinations of the Bene Gesserit. He represents true faith, both the strength that it gives and the fatal flaw that it breeds.

this character grows and you and sticks with you. I remember in the book when someone said something and Paul asks Stilgar and Stilgar says something about how he has subjugated hundreds of planets and billions of people. Anyway, don't have time to find it, but before Paul speaks to the council, Stilgar tells Paul to speak in his place and to slay him to do that, but Paul says no general would ever handicap is top weapon, that would be foolish, or something to that effect.

Faith is a double-edged sword: It can bring both hope and sorrow. However, I can't blame Stilgar considering how the Imperium treated the Fremen and how they kept Arrakis as a desert rather than make it into a green paradise.
