When Jessica drank the Water Of Life while pregnant, it affected "Alia" and made her fully conscious. She is, in fact, born as a full Reverend Mother with all that entails. Full access to all the memories of all the previous Reverend Mothers! Great reaction. Stay safe 🤘 ✌️

I think the movie did a poor job explaining what happens. Paul and Alia have the memories of all their ancestors, male and female. Paul knows that Jessica is a Harkonnen because the entire personality of Vladimir lives within him.

Yeah they didn't really explain why its so unique to have a male kwisatz haderach. They hinted at it with the Bene Gesserit preferring female babies in general, but not enough. Paul was literally not planned by them, and in the further story, it nearly destroys the order of the Bene Gesserit.

Lady Jessica is the Baron’s daughter. She had Paul and Alia with Leto Atreides - making each of them half Harkonnen. The Baron had a younger brother who we never saw, and he had two sons - Rabban and Feyd Rautha. Drax and Elvis are brothers technically lmao. Paul is their biological first cousin on his mother’s side.

The water of life are the fungal excretions found in the juvenile sandworms (sandtrout). When you drink the water of life its an overdose of concentrated pre-spice. Its not spice yet, as it has to be mixed with water below the surface of arakkis and then after it perculates for a while, it rises to the surface as spice. A key point that should be understood, is that spice, while a hallucinagen, is not its key purpose. The spice is used by the Guild Navigators (space travelers) to "fold" space. This allows interstellar travel not unlike the creation of wormholes through space decreasing the distance. If spice production would stop, then interstellar travel would stop. They said it right at the beginning of the movie. "He who controls the spice, controls the universe"

Great reaction! Felt like I was watching it for the first time again. haha. One of the most amazing things of the many amazing things about this film is how Villeneuve managed to condense this long and complex novel into these two films without tons of excess exposition. He knew exactly what to leave out, what to enhance and what to change. The Chani character in the film is very different from the novel and does a lot of heavy lifting for some of the conflicts that were left out. But I won't spoil anything in case you decide to read the novel. I think you'd love it. Thanks for the recantation.

58:56, had Paul been born a girl then she would have been married to Feyd and their son would be the Kwitsasz Haderach. But as freaky as Feyd is I think him and Paulina would have still been brawling with knives. Since Paul has been trained in Bene Gesserit ways he probably can force his body to seal up and begin healing quickly.

When Paul's sister (Alia) was born, she already as a Reverend Mother as she kind of also drank the Water of Life when her mother did. She already had the consciousness of all the Reverend Mothers before her when she was born. Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam actually refers to Alia as "abomination" in the book. Alia has a lot of problems as her own personality was never fully developed before becoming Reverend Mother, making her easy to control (possessed) by other previous personalities now in her.

In the first Dune book Chani was very much on Team Atreides working with Jessica behind the scenes to help in Paul's ascendancy. So there was none of the sniping and arguing that we see in this movie. Chani loved Paul and believed he was good for her people. The timeframe from Paul initially meeting Chani to the last battle was more like three years and not within the nine months of Jessica's pregnancy as shown. Paul's sister Alia was already born and walking around talking like an adult but with a child's voice. Chani had already given birth to Paul's son Leto as well. So when the time arrived to make the political marriage happen, Chani already knew she would have to sacrifice marriage for the good of the Fremen. Besides Paul and his mom straight up tell her this is just business and she will always be his true wife not Princess Irulan. 1:08:12, I don't think Paul is really seeing other people's pasts or reading their thoughts. But if he can see a few minutes or seconds into the future then he can simply repeat what he saw himself saying.

I really enjoy your reactions! As to the breadcrumb you speak of, it's right in plain sight if you know what you're looking at. The "blue" headband you see Chani wearing in this movie, signifies "maternity!" People thought it was there, just to identify her. Guess again. It's in the Dune lore, the movies, books, etc. Let that sink in! My guess, in the 3rd movie most likely titled Dune 3: Messiah, she will have the baby! This is why you're seeing such emotion from her. She knows she's pregnant, on top of the heartbreak she's experiencing. Your wife touched on this at the end of the movie, without realizing how powerful those thoughts are. But remember, Paul told his mother after he awoke, that Chani will come to forgive him, he has foreseen it! Remember that part of the movie. Can't wait for the 3rd movie & probably the last of the series with this director & cast.

Normally it signifies that a Fremen woman has given birth as in the books. The director stated in an interview that it is a visual signifier of the state of the relationship between Paul and Chani. Whenever you see her wearing the scarf it means she is still in love with Paul. When she stops wearing it, her love is waning or gone.

56:24, Really loved this movie. But there are three character rich conversations from the book are missing from the showdown scene with the Emperor: 1) Thufir Hawat (the older light skinned man from the first movie) Duke Leto’s Mentat advisor actually survived the Fall of House Atreides. The Harkonnens captured him and forced him to work for them. In secret despite being brutalized constantly, Thufir was still loyal to House Atreides. So when he found out that Gurney was still alive, he started feeding Gurney information to hurt the Harkonnen's spice trade. In this final scene, Thufir is given a poison needle to jab Paul with. Instead of betraying Paul he stabs his own hand with it. Thufir lives long enough to stand in front of Paul and address him as “My Duke”. It is a bittersweet moment for both of them as Thufir was like a grandfather to Paul. Thufir died happy to see Paul live to avenge his father and reestablish House Atreides. He had served Paul's grandfather Paulus Atreides and then his father Leto Atreides. So with his last breath Thufir let Paul know "I'm still your loyal man now and for always". As soon as Thufir dies, Paul stands up, wipes away his tears and calls out Feyd Rautha. He wanted to make sure everyone responsible for the death of his father and teachers would get it. Denis Villeneuve did film further scenes with Thufir but left it on the cutting room floor. Steven M. McKinley who played Thufir Hawat gave an interview about being disappointed that his work was left out of the second movie. 2) After Paul defeats Feyd, the Emperor Shaddam asks his best friend Count Hasimir Fenring to challenge Paul. Fenring is the husband of Margot Fenring the Bene Gesserit who got impregnated by Feyd. Fenring despite his mild mannered appearance is the Emperor's personal hitman. Fenring is almost a Kwisatz Haderach like Paul and has been trained by his wife Margot in Bene Gesserit ways. So with all of those skills Fenring could potentially defeat Paul in single combat But when Fenring and Paul looked at one another across the throne room, they experienced a shared moment of kinship. Fenring sees in Paul all he could have become had he not been born a genetic eunuch. Because of this birth defect Fenring can't father children with his beautiful wife or any woman. Paul also sees what Fenring is seeing in that moment and conveys back to the Count not pity but brotherhood. After that shared moment, Fenring turns to his best friend Emperor Shaddam and says "No". This was the first time that Shaddam was ever turned down by Fenring and he is shook to his core. Denis Villeneuve also filmed this scene with Count Fenring but left it on the cutting room floor. Actor Tim Blake Nelson who played Count Fenring has also given interviews about his heartbreak with being left out. Also, the 2000 Syfy adaptation has scenes with Count Fenring in them. Some of the talks between the Emperor and his daughter shown here were really talks with him and Fenring. 3) Paul and Jessica letting Chani know that the marriage to Princess Irulan is merely political. They explain that Paul will never spend time with Irulan, show her any passion or sire children with her. The Imperial marriage is all for show. Paul basically marries Irulan then goes home to Chani. They never mistreat the Princess but everyone knows that she is Empress in name only. David Lynch the director of the 1984 version of Dune actually filmed versions of both the Thufir and Chani scenes and they can be found on KZread.

as with the first film, everything seems more than good, except for just one "detail": the protagonist, who continues to appear insignificant, insipid and without any charisma, quite the opposite of what the Kwisatz Haderach should to be. to the problems of Paul's non-existent sister and much worse, the death of the Baron, one can also pretend nothing happened, but unfortunately what should have been one of the main characters of this second film, Chani, turned out to have been developed in completely wrong way, so much so that it seems to go against not only Paul but the entire struggle supported by his people.
