Being in Villeneuve mode, if you loved this music, you'll looooove the music in Arrival.. It's vocally oriented. And it's an amazing and moving film by Villeneuve.

This is a very dense story and not everything is spelled out in the movie as it is in the book. For instance if you have a shield and your shot by a laser gun both the shield and the laser gun will explode in a small nuclear explosion. So shields and lasers are used sparingly. The same technology that allows the Barron to float allows the soldiers to do so also. But if they use it in the desert it will draw a sandworm. 10:44 Jessica is not feeling what Paul is feeling, instead she's remembering going through this test herself and fears for Paul's life. She remembers feeling the pain and that is what she's experiencing. No one has magical powers in this movie. The closest you come to that is Paul seeing the future. But this is an ability that most humans have to a tiny degree. The Bene Gesserit instead have developed their minds to be able to control their bodies. The voice for instance is a tone of command developed by the Bene Gesserit over thousands of years. It's not magical it's more like you yelling at your dog and having it respond instantly without thinking. You say the words in a certain tone and most people will respond without thinking. the Bene Gesserit have control of their bodies They can choose whether or not to become pregnant and the sex of the child they're going to bear. They can neutralize most poisons again this is just control of their bodies. They can read your intentions, tone of voice, and body language So well It is almost like they read your mind, Again these are just skills honed over thousands of years. They created the religion on Dune to match the skills that the Kwisatz Haderach are predicted to have. The predictions are for the most part things that this super being will be able to do. Again not magical except for seeing the future. They make the predictions vague enough so that you can interpret them in different ways, They say he will be born in the south but actually what happens is he is reborn. Then people can interpret it as coming true. This movie is about not trusting charismatic leaders because they will always do what's best for them and bring harm to the population in general.

Nothing is spelled out in the book, that's probably the most famous thing about it.

This was filmed to be seen in a dark cinema, which is why it’s so hard to see the sandworm chase to the rock scene. When you rewatch one day, try it in a dark room! You will see some major cool things in Part 2. You couldn’t have part 2 without Part 1 setting it up first, though. The book and film are not alike and they cannot be. The book is 80% internal monologue and internal action, the mind acting on the body. I think Villeneuve has done a masterful adaptation into a visual medium, to create one of the best SF duologies (so far) ever made. I have faith his Dune Messiah will complete a trilogy that is as culturally big as the original Star Wars movies, and the Peter Jackson LOTR movies. Dune came out mid 60’s, and was as important to science fiction literature as LOTR was to Fantasy literature. It critiques the West’s colonial involvement in the Middle East in order to control oil, it critiques charismatic leaders who form a cult of personality, it is concerned with ecology and it’s exploitation/survival.

I´m rather old, I read the books when I was 16-17 years old. I even have the Litany against fear tattooed on my back. Fun fact: The sound of the little dessert mouse (Muad'dib) is recorded by a wild animal photographer named Dani Connor Wild (she lives in Sweden for the moment) and it is the sound of a red squirrel.

Like Peter Jackson did to Lord of the Rings, this film (and Part 2) did justice to the book.

Nice one, Emma! Yeah, they did a really great job visually adapting this story for the film and with the music too. Love it. I first read the books in the mid-70's as a teenager. They really stuck with me, especially the first book. I haven't seen part 2 of the movie myself yet, but I will soon, so I'll be ready to watch your reaction to it when it comes. Thanks for sharing this one! 🙂 JB

42:08 this kind of science fiction movies and are actually called "space opera"... 😆 "Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that emphasizes space warfare, with use of melodramatic, risk-taking space adventures, relationships, and chivalric romance. Set mainly or entirely in outer space, it features technological and social advancements (or lack thereof) in faster-than-light travel, futuristic weapons, and sophisticated technology, on a backdrop of galactic empires and interstellar wars with fictional aliens, often in fictional galaxies."

If you like movie soundtracks you should watch the sci-fi film Blade Runner (final cut) . It has the best synth soundtrack ever. Futuristic and romantic at the same time. And the sequel Blade Runner 2049 is made by Denis Villeneuve who made the Dune movies.

Dune has an interesting history with adaptations, for good or ill 😅 There is a version of Dune from 1984, with singer Sting playing a role and music composed by rock band Toto. It's bizarre and strangely beautiful despite suffering the limitations of the decade. Before the 84, experimental filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky attempted to get a version made with Mick Jagger as Feyd-Rautha and Salvador Dali as the Emperor (both characters are in Pt2 😉). The pre-production ultimately collapsed, but the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune discusses the ordeal and shows how so much work from the pre-production rippled through sci-fi for decades, including the 21/24 (though this comparison must be applied in hindsight as the documentary was years before)

This movie was good but Dune 2 sucks compared to the original movie, and the book. No spoilers. But they rewrote it. For the worse. What gets me is the hubris of these screen writers [nobodies] that think they’re better than multiple best-selling authors at telling a story. They really screwed it up from the fantastic original story. But since she has never seen the OG movie or read the book, she’ll never know how bad that movie actually is and it will seem all right to her. The visuals are stunning since they are done 40 years later with better tech. But that’s ALL the remake sequel is good for.
