Just came here to point out the fact that this idiot tried to label Donut Operator as "pro death to anyone who doesn't share his views" and the video he held up as an example of that featured an incident where the person in question was a wife beater who took his wife hostage and put a gun to her head. Which is why police breached and shot him. Care to explain why you would label a violent felon with a long history of domestic violence threatening his wife with death as a "victim of state violence?" That would strongly suggest that you're pro domestic violence, would it not?

A small correction at 18:03 the movie is not soviet, it's Polish. The difference is that Poland was never a part of the Soviet Union, although it was dependant on it. Thats why Poland is called a post-communist country and not a post-soviet one. This is important to say because „Wilczyca” is called the first true polish horror.

If you ever have the time to dig through more of Strugatsky Bros' writing, you'll find that inaction in the face of crisis was a repeating theme for them. I feel they constantly struggled with the question of how the right choice can be made at the right time, and whether such a perfect choice is even possible. You keep finding protagonists pinballing between fight, flight, and freeze, and each time there's a sense of regret for the decision made, whatever it was. "Prisoners of Power", "Escape Attempt", "The Second Invasion from Mars", "Lame Fate", "Dead Mountaineer's Hotel", and on, and on, and on...

personally i feel like the whole "Paul is a villain because he's white" Is a pathetically low resolution butchering of the original message, and an incredibly harmful message that's becoming all too common in pop culture and has elicited real world harm. But hey, I just ACTUALLY go outside and stuff, what do I know?

@@General_MaximusI feel like saying that the movie makes Paul a villain because he’s white to be rather disingenuous to what the movie is doing. In general, criticizing imperialism isn’t fundamentally criticizing white people, and making parallels to history isn't pushing an agenda. But looking at the movie specifically, I don’t think it simply makes Paul a villain. On one hand, yes he comes off as rather cold by the end, but the movie spends so much time establishing him as a genuinely empathetic guy who has the right intensions. When that transformation happens, it’s less that he is evil and more that we aren’t with his perspective anymore as he makes these really troubling decisions. We’re distanced from him so that the consequences of his choices are made clear rather than us seeing his visions that would justify that path. That does look evil in one sense, as the movie is criticizing him for taking advantage of the Fremen and twisting their culture, but it would miss the point to say this happening is because of who he is fundamentally. Paul’s goodness early on goes to show that even good intensions can get perverted, and that this is especially dangerous when people aren’t critical of their leaders, whoever they are. The movie is critical of the Fremen placing so much faith in Paul and the Bene Gesserit being arrogant and manipulative, too.

@@saig7570I'm only here because of the recent drama surrounding this "intellectual" and when I saw he made a dune video I had to see what he would say about the masterpiece Dune 2. I say this because I wanted to see what people said before that terrible video thought of his "essay" and stumbled upon this one. Maximus reply is straight-up retarded and there is no defense. I'm just replying to your view of Paul and what you think the movie perception is making Paul to be. Before anything else, I haven't read the books and most of what I understand comes from a couple of videos, My stepfather who read them, and of course the movie. I don't think the movie is making Paul to be a villain in any sense. Yes, Paul starts off as a clearly black-and-white morally good man. His transformation to me isn't made to make him a villain but to separate him from the common people. We are talking about a man who inherits god-like abilities and sees what needs to be done. He is Dunes Aragorn, Anakin( Literally without the fall to the dark side), Harry Potter, Katniss, Neo, and many more who follow the simple hero's journey or are forced to sacrifice for the greater good From the Start, everyone wants to make Paul assimilate into the Fremen. Everyone encourages it, making him a better fighter, tactician, leader, and friend. Paul tries to because one with them for his care of Chani and vice versa. His mother because she wants to take advantage of the people and Paul. Stilgar from the jump is indoctrinating Paul and everyone into thinking Paul is their savior. Saying Paul takes advantage of the Fremen like he is a dark being seems disingenuous. It seems like Paul is more of the Fremens( Stilgar) and his mother's sword. It's only after the Fremen's base gets leveled does Paul realizes he must become this to intact his revenge and also save the people he has become a part of and loves. I don't understand how Paul takes over the Fremen and twists their culture when all he does is not adhere to one rule before taking leadership. This one rule he breaks to keep his friend, mentor, and surrogate father alive and together. I don't think the movie is critical in the sense of the faith in Paul. The only way to back it up is that Paul is for all intents and purposes an evil outsider to take over the Fremen and twist into his whatever is through Chani which seems rather forced and doesn't belong. The Fremen should have faith in Paul since he has delivered time and time again and shown loyalty in the best way he can. He has bled, killed, followed, led, loved, and made friendships with them. back to him being a villain of sorts seems rather idiotic from my perspective. The villains are clearly the Harkonnen, Bene Gesserit, and the Emporer. The Imperialist Criticism is only there in the sense that Paul is basically afraid to be the ONE to make this Jihad/ Crusade happen. Paul is the only one in this movie who doesn't want to Jihad. Not even Chani is heard or seen opposing this idea. To Summarise I think Paul is a Good man and Painted to be a Tragic Character in the end. He lost his home, Father, friends, his love, his black-and-white goodness, and his mother since she went of the deep end. He didn't want to become their leader/ savior but was forced to and sacrificed for the greater good. Paul does everything within reason to keep those he loves safe while yes avenging his father. I don't see how that makes him a villain. If anything doesn't this make him somewhat more human along with him being a demigod. I feel most people would do whatever it took to protect those they cared for. Paul seems almost relatable disregarding the fact that he is a Dune God.

To briefly expand on the issue of "WWII-coding" of the book - you are reading the language references too shallow. The Empire speaks inglo-slavic while heavily infused with Turko-Persian imagery and language because the particular sources for Herbert are the Russian military operations in Armenia during the XIXth century (we also have chacobsa from that), the Byzantine and Persian exploitation of the Arabic tribes (this is referenced directly several times in the first book and also links with the Greco-Persian wars over then-christian Armenia) and, obvsly, the times when Herbert writes the book, e.g. the Cold War. Herbert has also never served actively in the military - he spent the Second World War as a photographer in the dockyards and briefly visited Vietnam as a reporter (which occured after he finished the first book).

I only know 'Hard to be a God' from the Aleksei German film. It really is hard to express what an oppressive atmosphere it generates. It's overwhelmingly claustrophobic, disorientating, bleak and above all disgusting. Almost everything in the film's world is just completely caked with mud and blood and shit. It's almost like a parody of what some people imagine medieval times were like, except played with a completely straight face, so you're forced to just sit in it and wallow helplessly in its filth. It's a brilliant and powerful work, but as acknowledged here, it's a massive slog to sit through.

Great video! Here is my contribution to the Soviet part of the story and the Strugatsky Brothers. Firstly, it is difficult to analyze a “Soviet” work because the Soviet Union had several different eras. The most important one for this work is the post-World War II era, which is being criticized in this book/film. The Strugatsky Brothers make a clear critique of the Soviet leadership at the time, but these are deep Maxiist Lenilist works. These can be seen in the role of Anton who, after arriving in Arkanar, must do his job in accordance with Lenin's vision from1902's book "What Is to be Done?" about The Spontaneity of the Masses (to fully understand the subject i recommend reading it). Lenin concluded that there would be no spontaneous socialist revolution; a socialist revolution could only be achieved through a closed and centralized Party of committed socialists, which would be the instrument to lead the working class. The “party”, in a Marxist-Leninist view, has completely different roles as parties in Western politics. Anton's role is an allegory for the partisan work necessary to bring about revolution, be it cultural or political, but he does not carry out this work, and when he does he exercises it diligently and becomes detached from it, becoming a mere observer of the situation. He was supposed to help in the development of society, but ended up with a centrist view of learning by mistake, when Lenin wrote about learning by "example" (again, read "What Is to be Done?" there is no one to explain it better them the man himself). Anyways, it's a super complex conversation, sorry for my English, but long story short: This is a book about the way the Soviet Union was moving away from the fundamental principles of its revolution. A book that criticizes the regime, but not socialism itself. All the best!

I have been wondering if even neurotypical people were overwhelmed or mesmerized, which isn't necessarily bad but for me it became difficult to follow the story as if the stylistic bombast was swallowing my mind.
