Do people who complain about bagpipes in "such a technologically advanced setting" not realise that we are currently perfectly capable of synthesising any instrument and playing it on speakers? And yet, in almost every military or ceremonial context, we use real instruments. It's not about the pure sound, it's about tradition and culture.

Supposedly in Dune's lore, mankind had a real problem with computer technology and artificial intelligence. Like a Terminator style war happened. So they fucking hate most computerized things lol. That's why some of their people are like human computers - because they don't trust real computers. And they like old school music, don't need any computerized sounds, mixing, speakers, etc. Just good old bagpipes

Especially in a universe that has gone back to melee combat and plays host to a hierarchy rule where the houses go back tens of thousands of years and everything they do has to be drawn out in giant displays of procedure and ceremony. You know who else has anthems..... Every country in the world. But a house in Dune having an anthem breaks the immersion somehow........ People are fucking stupid.

This was posibly the biggest surprise of Dune soundtrack. An excellent use of bagpipes - the pride, the strength. At the initial moment, you tend to laugh, about that instrument, but then your smile freezes, because you realize that these guys mean business and they are going to stand their ground. The coming of Atreides to Arrakis was filmed very well as an event that was meant to show the population that there is a new sheriff in town.

I really appreciated this too, and I really like how the Atredies were shown as excellent warriors, well trained, well equipped, they were not pushovers by any stretch of the imagination. It also could be Greek bagpipes, as Atreides may be able to trace it's roots to Greek civilizations. However, since it's set in THOUSANDS of years in the future, it could be a mix & blend of European cultures in one house. Either way, it's beautiful!
@lairddougal38332 жыл бұрын
According to House history the Arteides had their origins in Greece. The bagpipes were very much a part of Greek history and culture, some accounts saying they came from Egypt or further east and making their way to Caledonia courtesy of the Romans. Others say Ireland, but regardless, it’s not surprising that a House claiming descent from Agamemnon would have bagpipes as a core part of its culture. The pipes have also have a strong military association and can be found as an enduring part of military bands in countries as varied as Pakistan, Jordan, India, America, India, Uganda, Sudan as well, of course as England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

In traditional battle bagpipes were meant to terrify enemies by making a sound that resembled the screams of spirits on vengeful paths. Bagpipes can also hit a key that can trigger blood lust in those who hear it; which is why during WW2 British; Irish, Scottish, Canadian and Australian units fought harder in their presence when they played. The pipes are a powerful instrument and were rightfully feared on the battlefield. The sound they made could trigger fear; or become its master. House Atreides feels very powerful with the pipes playing. Its a very loving touch to the faction.

Part of why the bagpipes are used for the atreides are the instrument's roots. Known today for their ubiquitous presence among scottish and more widely celtic peoples, the bagpipes originated in egypt and the levant thousands of years ago. This is relevant as it relays a historical precedent as well as a thematic emblem. The atreides home world, Caladan, is filled with harsh landscapes and much water, a la Scotland, and of course arrakis is a stand in for the arabian penninsula. It is in part a symbol for a return to form, an acceptance of roots, and a recognition of identity.

The thing I love the most about Frank Herbert's genious is he made a setting where true advancement is based on the human mind and not technology. Traditional values, the stability of the Imperium and the respect of the family are all important symbols and ideas that are very much pre-modern and yet eternal. I prefer this kind of vision to all other transhuman distopia. I love how he brought back the spirit of the middle ages in a technologically advanced world, where hand to hand combat and heroic qualities outweigh brute strength and laser weapons. The Bagpipe symbolises everything that I love about House Atreides: loyalty, bravery, respect of the ancients and the appreciation of art.

It's not something you would find in modern futuristic sci-fi, but definitively the kind of thing that someone from the past would think that survives us, same with the bull-fighting. All you folks whining about the pipes being played in this far future setting, you do realise that there was a Scottish piper playing British soldiers onto the beach at Normandy just 80 years ago. He was called Bill Millin and the only reason he survived standing there playing Black Bear was that the Germans thought he'd gone mad. I can't help but think him playing away helped alot of those British kids get off of that beach as well. I suppose you could put it under the category of psychological warfare. Inspiring for your side, demoralising for the other.

It also could be Greek bagpipes, as Atreides may be able to trace it's roots to Greek civilizations. However, since it's set in THOUSANDS of years in the future, it could be a mix & blend of European cultures in one house. Either way, it's beautiful!

Don’t know why I had to turn to an unofficial channel to appreciate this masterpiece, but I’m thankful that it’s here. Thanks for posting it. I love the constant drone of the bagpipes line behind the melody. Usually such constant noises like that are uncomfortable and annoying to listen to but in this context it evokes power and determination as if nothing can stop the might of House ATREIDES
It was such a trip seeing this in the movie theater. At the first lonely bagpipe I sort of rolled my eyes because it felt so underwhelming, but as soon as the others joined in my eyes just involuntarily welled up with tears and i just started crying. It was incredible, and very surprising to have such a strong and such a physical reaction to something I was kind of scoffing at literally a second earlier.
Best part for me! Was not expecting the pipes!

I agree that the bagpipes signal the pride and strength of house Atreides, but on the other hand this melody resembles “amazing grace” (often played at funerals - referencing the downfall of the house Atreides) so much that it is hard to ignore. . Well played, Mr. Zimmer.
It is such an achievement to convey the feeling of heroism using major uplifting tones, especially followed by a dark deep solo. May inspiration shine upon us all as it does for Hans Zimmer.
Thank you for this extended version! :D
If you ever need a morale boost this is the song for you. Nothing better than feeling the strength and honor of House Atreides.

I may be in a minority here, but i loved the bagpipes BECAUSE they feel "out of place". It's not something you would find in modern futuristic sci-fi, but definitively the kind of thing that someone from the past would think that survives us, same with the bull-fighting. Best alarm to wake up to in the morning.
If Dune Part Two has a reprise of this during the finale, this man may shed a tear...
To my ears the bagpipes start pretty stereotypically "Scottish" but then halfway in sound like the Ottoman Empire's imperial pipes. Strong Greek - Turkish - Middle Eastern vibes.
Gotta love space bagpipes
I like to believe they're all just standing there for the band to stop so they can be given Arrakis but the bagpipe dude's just over there blowing his heart out
I never knew bagpiper music would be such majestic and can give goosebumps hands down the instrument is one of the best
Thank you for extended bagpipes. Atreides!
When the bagpipes merge with the drums is can feel the heat of the desert, hear the hot wind whipping through the blazing sands, I can feel the vibrations of the sand worms under my feet , and smell the scent of the spices on dune my God this paints a picture
Needed this
there are literally no computers in the setting and the space travel is only permitted by tripping balls and BAGPIPES is where people draw the line? Cmon man

There is much more to it than that bud
Two things I now know about House Atreidies. They're actually Scottish and they're very patient people.
Fun Fact: The start are not bagpipes at all, but Guthrie Govan on the eletric guitar.
I still remember seeing this for the first time in IMAX. When the bagpiper started playing I thought “really? Bagpipes?” Then the rest kicked in and I thought “Fuck yeah! Bagpipes!”. I was absolutely floored. 💀

Thanks for uploading this version with no burping chant...
You made my day
This scene was such a powerful introduction! It was ceremony, designed to be momentous and display the strength of House Atreides so that everyone knows the mighty new ruler of Arrakis. I love it, it's so powerful. It makes such a statement!
Beautiful What a masterpiece of a movie
Three things remain from Earth: The Catholic Bible, the Spanish Torada, the Scotish Bagpipe. And that's good enough.

Don't forget Zen Buddhism since Frank Herbert was influenced by Zen philosophy, and Dune is just Zen Buddhism disguised as Space Islam, Ottoman feudalism.
I like to imagine that at some point in history House Atreides charged into battle as the tremor of ten thousand bagpipes could be heard from beyond the horizon.
Thanks for posting and sharing. Very stirring.

Pretty surreal how Denis went from "Incendies" to this
Epic
Brilliant!
I cannot wait for the next movie. I was attending to the cinema three times and I will order the blue Ray DVD if it releases.
This is amazing music!
I can see, in my minds eye, the massed bands of the Highland regiments slow marching to this.
God Bless the Beloved Sound of the Bagpipes 🥃🇺🇸🇮🇪🏴 Enjoying this with a fine cigar and a fine whiskey
Chills everytime it kicks in
The people complaining about bagpipes being in a future setting would have a stroke if they knew what 40k was LOL

mongol sardaukar, graeco-scottish Atreides... he really understood the cultural mix theme of the books.
Interesting that this is arranged more like a funeral march than military music, it sounds very similar to Mist Covered Mountains, which was played in the Queen’s funeral procession
Simply epic!!!
Love the ambiance
