Great video, small detail though, small thing, but Jessica couldn't marry into House Harkonan because her father IS the Baron. See Paul is descendent from the Atredes line, but Jessica's line is The Bull (Harkonan) and that is why Paul is so rare and otherwordly he is the "best" of both peoples

Minor point - his death to Jamis isn't a symbolic death, it's him actually dying. Paul can't see the definite future, he can see possible futures - him dying in the duel is one possible future, which he obviously hopes to avoid

I think Villeneuve waiting to get more experience in director other sci-fi movies like Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, before to start on Dune shows how much respect he had for the source material as he wanted to make sure he made the best film possible to honor it. The gulf between having an experienced director working on Dune , compared to some of the recent MCU movies that had very inexperienced directors is very telling.

I'm disappointed that Lady Jessica was played as so anxious and vigilant. My impression of her from the books is someone more controlling, certain of herself but needing to cultivate calm to take decisive but not rushing in. It is she who leads him into the desert a child up to the point where Paul's meeting with Fremen and battle serving as his rite of passage, not really meeting Chani until accepted into the Fremen Seich.

I thought this was a terrible tribute to the book that focused on visual spectacle over the compelling plots within plots of the book. Normally I don't care if a movie makes necessary changes to bring a vision to life... but this just ignores the parts of Dune that differentiate it from the works that Dune would inspire. I love Star Wars, but reducing Dune to an action movie feels like a huge disrespect to the source material.

They don't get their abilities from spice, but something called "the juice of sapho", which is why their lips are stained - or maybe tattooed to cover up the stains, I forget. The navigators of The Spacing Guild, on the other hand, are literally drowning in the spice.

There are two key scenes in the book that I'm gobsmacked were left out of the film: 1) the big dinner scene (which would have been a great way to introduce & explain all the various factions) & 2) Duncan's drunked rant towards Jessica followed by her confrontation with Thufir Hawat (which would have added great tension about how the move to Arrakis affected the House, as well as shown a Bene Gesserit & a Mentat going tete-a-tete) These would've added maybe only 10 min or so to the runtime. I think Dune actually suffers from being too short. We don't "luxuriate" in Arrakis after the move & the way it's edited makes it seem like the Harkonnens attacked the same day the Atreides arrival. There's really no concept of time passing for the viewer.

  • @zoltanposfai3451

    @zoltanposfai3451

    4 ай бұрын

Agreed. The dinner scene is such a condensed summary of non-fremen life on Arrakis. And I think that Leto's single sentence, "I'm not asking the Mother. I'm asking the Benne Gesserit", does not convey long-term intentional friction between Leto and Jessica, and how that also unsettles others. (e.g. Duncan.)

  • @DrtyALGreen

Many of the BG abilities are not derived from Spice, including the voice and their control of their body. They can realize nearly complete control of their bodies through a practice called Para Bindu. This is demonstrated by Jessica training Paul before they left Calladan.

I don't remember completely but I do know that after a BG drinks of the Water of life to become a Reverend Mother It gives them the ability to control the way their bodies break down chemicals within their bodies making them "Immune" to poison (They have to actively concentrate on breaking it down to make it not kill. in the book Paul of Dune there is a scene where he gets attacked by a bunch of hunter/seekers. He grabs and stops a bunch but manages to get hit a couple times but is able to convert the poison into something safer for his body to break down but it requires time to do.)

It’s not the spice alone that gives people powers, it’s an enhancement drug. The gender choosing and their powers of observation and control is through the BG’s practices and training, spice only enhances what humans had developed on our own. And the mentats use a drug called sapho that stains their lips which puts them in a trance, some use the spice to enhance these abilities

In Dune 2020, the scene where the kris knife is presented to Jessica, there is the guard in the room that she tells to stand down, yet in the book it is made clear in this scene, that if anyone other than a fremen sees the knife, they must either be killed or have a purification ritual, and that the knife must shed blood before being sheathed. In the book, Jessica goes to stick Mapes to draw blood, but her training catches signs telling her that the knife is likely poisoned, since the tooth nerve creates a hollow that allows poison to easily be secreted, and at the last moment cuts her with the edge, thus adding more and more to the legends for Mapes, thus her report on Jessica is the best it could be.

I read all the books and saw all the movies. This is one of the best, most complex stories ever written. One gripe I have with all the movies though is how little they show of the bene gesserit. They're a really interesting faction pulling the strings of the universe, performing eugenics to control the future, holding the knowledge of all previous members, and have full physical (martial arts) and mental control. The Voice is just one tool in their vast, terrifying arsenal.

at 19:00 , one thing I think helps with their "animal vs human" bit, is that these great houses have people who've been bred to be superheroes. If they're not going to use the power wisely, they won't be able to be stopped. they're right to be terrified by their own creations giving in to their baser desires like the Harkonnens do so much. We should also be wary, too, though less murdery.

This quickly becoming my favourite KZread channel, great job again Paul! The Death visions I thought were him seeing potential futures and the beginning of his prescience which later envelops him. Here he can navigate it as its just his own immediate mortality that's at risk, later every action leads to a larger dark path (which I won't spoil) that he feels he has no way out of. By seeing the potential futures he can navigate the fight as he knows the outcome of each move. He's playing it like chess like a game which echoes back to the fight with Gurney at the beginning which is why I believe it was done like this, to echo both the past and future.

In the books the Baron and his family do truly horrible, corrupt things. The over top behavior in Dune 84 is a proxy for actions that could not be put on film.

YO!!! That Dreams (Gabrielle) at the 10:40 mark was a helluva lyrical deep cut. Had to pause and get a listen for nostalgia sake, so my appreciation is truly genuine for that one.

Felt like I needed a refresher before seeing the sequel. But to my surprise you have this breakdown?! Dope. I love it. Thanks for the solid work Heavy Spoilers gang!

Paul saw himself die because he didn't just see the future, but ALL possible futures, and the decisions he needed to make to bring about the one of his choosing.

Also Baron Harkonnen favored and definitely did terrible things a boy that looked like Paul, which is even creepier when you realize that that is his grandfather. That being said in essence the Bene Gessirit had already fulfilled their goal of uniting the Atriedes and the Harkonnen to create the Kwisatch Haderach through Jessica and united the houses unbeknownst to the universe as Jessica is the daughter of Baron Harkonnen I believe. Which should have been known by the Reverend Mother as they keep very exhaustive lists of lineage of their sisters.

He sees glimpses of possible futures. So he saw his own death, as well as one where Jamis lives and teaches Paul about the desert. Shame he didn't find his way to this outcome.

I think you are correct in seeing the vision of Paul's death fighting Jamis are a metaphor for rebirth, but it is also its him walking through the various potential outcomes to find the (golden) path subconsciously.
