I have not seen 2021 version yet, but I agree about the respect for 1984 version, because it was the first adaptation to make it to the screen. All other previous attempts since the 1960's were not greenlit. And of course, 1984 version were able to do all special effects without CGI, because that did not exist yet & the effects & physical set designs were still amazing, thanks to all the carpenters & electricians etc that were hired.

​@@Jasminehodge637 ... Yes, the Villeneuve version was able to do what the Lynch version was originally planned to do, which was to split it into 2-3 parts. This was originally discussed in the late 1970's when Ridley Scott was still the hired director, a few years before Lynch got hired. So in a way, the Villeneuve version REDEEMS what the Lynch version was not able to do. It was Universal Picture's fault for cutting it down from 2-3 parts down to 2 hours, not Lynch or DeLaurentis. This really disappointed Lynch & he had to cut out a lot of the script that was already there, crunching down a 400-page book plot to a confusing mess for audiences who had never read the novel. Such a shame, the Lynch version could have been better, even with some artistic deviances from the novel. Frank Herbert was on the set, so he did also help as much as he could, despite the further shortening length of the film by the distributor.

Lies. Where's the colors? The textures? Etc? His version is empty, bland colors, souless, bad acting. etc.

I think Lynch did a fabulous job, but it would have been impossible to do the original story justice with the available technology at the time. It just wasn't ready to be made.

@Cpt Falcon they didnt remake blade runner at all. 2049 is unique compared to the original film. Its a sequel. Also dune from the 80s is literal shit. The excessive use of voiceover to complete what could have been done visually as is done in the new film. The characters just arent suited at all to what they should be according to the book. I.e. the barron and gurney. Just a terrible film, not adaptation...film

I just watched the original and really liked it, even though its basically a set up for sequels to come. That being said some of the composite shots from the original are truly breathtaking considering how old they are

Its also very 80s though. Dune deserved a more serious tone and the tone of the first is definitely more campy. It is still good for Dune fans but it was definitely not the definitive edition and got panned for that reason. Dune is a story anyone could love but the old one, in its campiness, made it too weird and nerdy for the general audience. I don't mind that per se but I definitely find it silly while Dune is a very serious, character driven, philosophical take on politics and the exploitation of indigenous peoples. It deserved, and finally got, that gritty serious tone it needed. I really believe that Game of Thrones, LOTR, The Star Trek reboots, the Dark Knight Trilogy, The Joker, The Witcher, and the MCU paved the way for that. The are more serious character dramas with backdrop of nerdiness everyone ended up liking it, including hardcore nerds. This picked up the baton from there. These retellings of classic nerd culture in a more serious tone is what this "genre" of nerdy stories is exactly what all of us wanted so that we could share these gripping, amazing stories with the rest of the world, and honestly, its good that the campy nerd movies are a thing of the past. They definitely have there merit and can be good sometimes, but these are just better films with more gripping drama and more interesting characters.

@@bucran0 The lighting is crap? This is dark subject matter about warring factions and the lighting reflects that. If you are a fan of the original novel you will see that it is more closely related with the themes of the novel. Game of thrones was lit in the same way. Both have good lighting for different reasons but the new one is much more gritty, realistic, and closer to the themes of the original novel. Frank Herbert wrote a space opera filled with fucked up people doing fucked up things to further their own goals. Including Paul at points. It is a coming of age story set in a grim dark world. The lighting is perfect for that. Imagine if a 40k movie was lit like the first one. I am not saying it is bad lighting but it was trying to draw in audiences who expected campy sci-fi. This is a realization of the source material and shows/tells it as it is.

@@bucran0 I also don't think any lighting is straight up crap. This is art and it is subjective. The director had a vision in both of them and they kept that vision throughout. It might not be your cup of tea but it's not straight up crap. Even the room had good lighting for what it was going for. It was going for a grounded realistic vibe and the lighting shows that, even though it is shotty at points.

If it weren't for Lynch's Dune I might never have been introduced to science fiction books. When I saw it was based on a book I ran to my school library and found a copy. Decades later and it is still one of my favorite books/series.

Also keep in mind that the idea for Dune came from Frank visiting the sand dunes on the coast of Oregon for an environmental conservation observation.

After almost 40 years, David Lynch's version is still a milestone and still fascinates me. I love Dune from 1984, the cast, the set, the soundtrack, the whole Lynch style. And everything almost without CGI.

I gotta say Lynch’s cinematography does hold up pretty well.

I had no single idea of the previous dune film nor the book but oh my i watched the new one in IMAX yesterday and it was phenomenal. It’s epic and visually stunning of a half complete story. Once again Denis Villeneuve and Warner Bros present an amazing film. It’s my best film of 2021 so far. Can’t wait for second installment and yeah WB have basically confirmed the second part.

This is reminding me how much I adored the 1984 version as a kid. CGI and length clear limitations, but it had an iconic look to it and Kyle MacLachlan imprinted on me as a kid. Not to mention the score. I'm still pretty fond of it. Can't wait for the new one. Happy that Villeneuve has made something that already looks distinct to me.

Imago Gestalter I just reread the book last month and everything was recognizable and easy to follow down to the page nearly. To the point I thought the trailer gave too many key moments away but maybe it’s just me. And we haven’t even seen the areas that show more wealth and waste. I wouldn’t mind more regency style uniforms with a big more pomp or a battle pug or two but I think the real smack across the face is going to come when they contrast the two houses. And we’ve only really seen one closer yet. A nice touch with the stone carvings showing the age of the family line. And they’ve not even got to Imperial Court entourage.

yeah i watched the film when i was 18, and although im usually critical of movies that have so many flaws and problems (I watched the Extended Cut), I still love it and it has stuck with me. The character's, although not very in-depth, are so memorable even just by looks and the fantastical cast. The practical effects and designs are awesome and the score I listen to frequently, that TOTO soundtrack is just brilliant, ive been listening to it constantly for the last week.

The thing is; I love all of the interpretations of Dune for different reasons. I love the 1984 Lynch version and the 2000 mini - series and its sequel "Children of Dune;" which I own all three And I am sure I will love the 2021 version when I see it.

I was able to appreciate something in every version but especially the miniseries in 2000 because the director as well as the company responsible for its production were intelligent enough to know that one film was not enough to cover all the material from the books; which also makes me appreciate that Denis Villenueve was wise enough to recognize the same as well. Here's to hoping the sequel gets the greenlight as well as the proposed series for HBO Max on The Sisterhood of The Bene Gesserit.🙏

The way it looked in my minds eye was somewhere between the three versions, and incorporates aspects of each, but none precisely and when I read it, I found myself experiencing a loneliness throughout the period shown in Dune 2021. I will say that Timothee Chalamet is incredible. When he's onscreen I have trouble watching anyone else. Rebecca Ferguson is the same, but she is still eclipsed by Chalamet - at least for me. I love this series. I'm so glad that Denis seems to feel about it as Peter Jackson did about Lord of the Rings. He has a true reverence for the source material.

I see people bashing it, but I liked the voice overs in that film. Then again, people didnt like the voice over work in Blade Runner and thats my favorite version. Hard to translate books if you leave out the parts of the characters thoughts. It will be impossible create a Dune adaptation without it.

Rewatching David Lynch's version after the new movie makes me appreciate both movies even more

awesome, both of them! thanks for doing this vid.

The 1984 film had plenty of issues but the visual style and most of the casting was pretty damn good. There are clear stylistic choices made between the 2020 and 1984 film in the clips here but I wouldn't say either is outright wrong or right. With the 1984 you do have to accept the technology available for effects at the time. That said I am greatly looking forward to the 2020 film. I still will watch the 1984 on occasion based on the excellent production value and visuals despite the mangling of the story.

I LOVED the costumes in the 1984 version! The only thing lacking was script and direction.. and shouldn't have been only one movie, they jammed too much in it

Patrick Peterson the problem is the voiceovers were used to convey an awful lot of information which the book could easily convey. Knowing the book you do not need it so much but for a movie for broad appeal you would have to convey that information somehow. I am really looking forward to seeing how this film handles it.

damn i havent seen it yet. Was born 11 yers after it came out ha! But seeing this 2020 trailer i randomly saw the old school dune on hbo just sitting there. Im gonna check it out in a bit. But was the story just mangled from someone who read the books as well? or just in general the story for the movie was a failure?

What I find fascinating about the comments here is that nobody's talking about how similar some of these shots are in terms of framing. Yes we know it's the same story and this contains the same content. But I just think it's really fascinating how similar some of these shots truly are.

That's so true. They say the 2020 version is based directly on the book and not the 1984 movie, but when you see them compared like you can't help but wonder how much of the new movie is actually a carbon-copy of the old one.

Not really. The movie looks very dated by now, especially considering it's from 1984 and other movies prior to it still look good today. Of course seeing it in a trailer with snippets of it might make you think so. But there are some scenes in the original film that look like crap by now.

@@The_Curious_Cat Those scenes you're talking about are the green/blue screen scenes. They were criticized when the movie first came out. Technically, those could be redone if the companies wanted to spend the time and money to come out with a remastered edition.

Looks were never the problem with Dune. Plot pacing, and ham fisted exposition dumps were.

I remember when I was a kid that "Dune" was the only movie that played for over 52 weeks in the cinemas of my hometown. At that time I was too young to watch it or to even read the novel - but several years later I understood =)

In fact, there are some people who evolved to be completely fearless, and usually those people are the most capable surgeons, police officers, soldiers, etc.

Just watched Dune 2021 last night. Visually stunning, and very enjoyable. It did lack the weirdness, the delving into if you will, of the whole Dune universe though. But I really was into to it and then it ended. Very rudely before they even were halfway into the story lol. Still picking my jaw up off the floor, honestly how could they (I know they want us to go see Dune Part Two). But man.

it was the worst movie of 2021, i was bored the whole time and wanted to fell asleep. I was disappointed cause I thought this movie would be good. I don’t even get why Zendaya was in the press 🤦‍♀️ She just appeared for 5 mins MAX super disappointed

@@dontreadmyname3904 Sounds like you weren’t paying close enough attention. There’s a reason for this. Some of the stuff went over my head too. As I wasn’t really familiar with Dune. But the movie did leave me thinking after. I started looking into the book more and it made a lot more sense. A lot of my thoughts were confirmed. (like the fact that Paul can see multiple versions of the future) Denis’s movies are a bit of slow burn and much more subtle in that they do not hold your hand. I strongly recommend you either watch it again or look into the lore of Dune you’ll probably end up having a greater appreciation for it.

i've never seen anything related to dune, and i thought the movie was weird af, specially the first half so... idk, if you say things are weirder imo it may have been a bit too much, just in the pov of someone that's not realated to dune

the modern aesthetics in the 2020 version definitely fits more with the times, while the zaniness of Lynch's version similarly speaks to the 80s. They're both amazing in their own ways

@@gerardlacroix6015 Yeah, Lynch's Dune nails the costumes and the noir-baroque art design (even for some space ships!) really sold me on the concept of empires thousands of years old. I am....puzzled that with the exception of a few sets, most things in the new trailer seem so incredibly _flat_ and disposable. Like the armor seen on Isaac's Leto. The duke of a royal family at least 10,000 years old wearing featureless plain armor. Apparently without even the Atreides family crest. Very, very puzzling!

I think people forget about budgets and technology at the time. It was only budgeted for 1 money of around 2 hours. It's hard to compact Dune into 2 hours. They did a good job. I liked there choice of actors. Kyle MacLacklin did a great job the actress that played Chani. I don't see care for their choice of actors on this new one.

Such films as Tootsie, The Godfather, Gone with the Wind, Apocalypse Now, the Outsiders, the Breakfast Club, Titanic, Spitfire Grill, Back to the Future, Pulp Fiction, Scarface, Citizen Kane, Dog Day Afternoon, Caddy Shack, Capt. Ron, Pretty Woman, Milargro Beanfield War, Blaire Witch Project, Easy Rider.. and .. YES.. BLADE.. (FXCK'n).. RUNNER (which this same Director, FXCKED!! Did he even watch the original??? And, I honestly DO NOT want to say, write or even whisper this last example.. but I know Disney.. has been kicking around the idea of remaking this... THIS..MASTERPIECE.. "the BLACK HOLE".. Just watched the new Dune. They leave out some stuff the original had in it and made the first battle scene much longer. Skipped a lot from the first but somehow it is longer. Watched a fan edit of the original on KZread. They managed to include long forms of many scenes. Definitely gives more info then both original 1984 and the new one. At least the first part of the new one. It is more clear in the fan edit for the motivation of the Emperor and the Jesuits. Highly recommended.

This video really advertises how great and under-appreciated Lynch's version is.

Lynch's cut has some visually impressive moments, but lacks the pacing and story building that makes the new one so great.

Very well made comparison - shows clearly where Villeneuve was inspired by Lynch and where he went his own way

Great job on this video. The only thing I would change is to include the sound from both movies and not just the new one. That's especially important with the original movie due to the variety of accents by the actors. It gives the original Dune an other worldly ambiance. It's also extremely clear that the original 37 year old Dune, even with all its faults, stands up so very well compared to the new one. Arguably, the sets of the original movie are so much more richly detailed and beautiful. That's pretty amazing.

This was fantastic! I just watched the 1984 version yesterday. Can’t wait for the 2020 version. Well done on this video!!

Those pounding drums around 1:13 are right out of that Blade Runner 2029 sequence when the spinner cars shoot it out. Lynch production design is still in a class by itself. Unreal sets. Great costumes. I wish the Lucas Museum that will open some day will have a Dune room. Even if they have to remake it from scratch. Really. I'd fly to Chicago to see it. Ornithopter.

I'm amazed how well the 1984 movie still holds up.

2020 looks technically impeccable, but atmospheres and estrangement of Lynch's universe is unreachable. This is really a great edit, it shows clearly the different color choices. Villeneuve style is cold like an hospital, Lynch used a more saturated palette, with a great prevalence of gold and warm colours.

2021 was almost scene for scene the same as the 1984 alt edition recut which I highly recommend. They left a lot out like the navigators, but did a greater job of introducing the universe.

Kyle MacLachlan has such a beautiful face. Like a greek sculpture.

1984 i was in the cinema as a kid as birthday gift. Dune totally flashed me and maybe awakens my interest in Sci-Fi. So it's something speciasl for me. I somehow feared the new Dune movie for what they may do to "my" Dune. But when i saw the new movie i was totally fine with it, i love it. And your cut perfectly shows why.
