Duncan Scolded For Helping Entrepreneur Explain His Financials | Dragons' Den

Ойын-сауық

Award-winning Vineyard owner Geoff Bowen nearly sunk his chances of investment when he could not keep track of his figures in the Den but Duncan offered a helping hand. Geoff Bowen is seeking an investment of £60,000 in return for a 20% equity stake but after Duncan's kind act, will any Dragon see Geoff's potential?
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

There are Tonnes of Millionaires who started out without that knowledge. Anyway, that's another topic. But here, The question is, when you're blessed with a good life, shouldn't you at least be a bit helpful to others? Of course this is Dragon's Den. And it is harsh. But the character of each individual reflects in ways they deal with the entrepreneurs. Just the difference in attitude between Duncan and Deborah is what I was pointing out.

  • @jessicataylor7174

    @jessicataylor7174

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@CLBellamey That's because she is confusing the details of 2 different investment - the 'investors' into the vineyard experience for 10 years (like you or me); the investor in the business (like dragons). If WE invest we pay £9.5k and get a return of £7k in the first year (from existing vineyards), 600 bottles of wine over 10 years, and bragging rights and the 'dream' of owning part of a vineyard, activities etc at the vineyard if we want to visit. The guarantee on that return is that the land is already owned. SHE, as a dragon investing in the business and gets a percentage share of the entire business. For 9 years of every 10 paid for by 'investors in the experience' (like you and me) the profit goes to the company. They can't sell what they don't have. They must sell land that is cultivated to make sure there is profit in year 1 for those 'buying the experience'. He wants to expand and sell more, but it took 7 years to get to this award-winning stage and it will take time to grow more (literally). A similar comparison is a 10 year gym membership versus a percentage share in a gym. She mixed them by asking what you get for a £9.5k investment then assuming she would get likewise. Someone buying a 'vineyard experience' for 10 years is NOT the same as someone buying a percentage share of the entire company.

  • @CLBellamey

    @CLBellamey

    4 жыл бұрын

    Jessica Taylor No, you misunderstood, watch the video again. The people giving him £9.5k for the experience are getting 600 bottles over 10 years, and the opportunity to visit anytime they like. They do not get a return on their money. Just to demonstrate how ridiculous the numbers you suggested are, if they got a £7k return on £9.5k that would mean they have effectively only paid £2.5k, and on top of that they get ~£12k worth of personalised champagne, all while not having to lift a finger as the entrepreneur works for 10 years. Also, that would mean the company effectively takes in £50k every 10 years, which isn’t enough to buy the land they are using let alone pay the shareholders.

  • @GregDeman

    @GregDeman

    Yes that's how I'm understanding it as well, the £7K is 20% of the net profit of £35K in year 1. I think the guy should have negotiated a lot harder he has just handed over 40% of his business for nothing.

They were like (to the pitcher) you have enough money therefore you dont need mine. It was james that understood that he needs the expertise but james isn't in construction so couldn't help. Alot of the dragons come across as arrogant. Plus James was the one with the clever deals. He thought outside the box. Put Peter to shame. In the recent series its Peter who has taken a page out of James's book by doing unconventional deals.

He never postures about his time being wasted (it really ticks me off when Peter, Theo, Deborah, et al. start puffing their feathers at being 'insulted' by the entrepreneur). Yes, Duncan wants as big a bite as he can get, but he doesn't neg the product or the person the way Peter does in order to have the business all to himself and thus take a bigger chunk. Also, he makes my daughters laugh. They won't tolerate an episode without him. :D

    I’ve seen quite a few of them on this show get lost for words or nervous. It must not be easy presenting in front of them.

    After reading and looking it up for myself that he died 3 months after this from a brain tumor. I could only imagine that played a part in him having that brain fart no pun intended, but I could be wrong.

    ☠OsirisTheGreatShaman☠ Someone said this aired quite a few years ago and the tumor he got developed extremely fast so it wouldn’t have been around this time. I thought the same as you, though, you’d assume that right?

    Lol I’d be lost too if I was that guy. He literally broke down his costs, which included paying back the 60k to the investor. Poor guy looked so confused. When Deborah demanded again to tell her how she’d get her money back, he was like, “But I just did…” It was basically a one year loan that ended up (with Duncan’s offer) being paid back with 25% interest and a chunk of land. No wonder Duncan immediately agreed to it: it was the surest bet of any pitch they’ve ever heard lol

    Lmao the irony of this comment, the editing actually made it out to be a lot worse than it was *especially* in the early episodes 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️look at all the close up shots - that's to drag it out and make it seem like it was a much longer silence than it was in order to make the pitchers look like complete idiots for your entertainment. Nothing realistic about it lol.

    I like Duncan, he's a genuinely good person who doesn't like seeing people fail. There's one guy one the Australian shark tank who has the same vibe as Duncan and you can tell they really want people to do great things and thats what we need more of in this world.
