Duncan's Bar Mitzvah - A Call for Freedom to Marry

On November 9, 2013, Duncan McAlpine Sennett became a Bar Mitzvah at Congregation Beth Israel in Portland, Oregon.
During this important rite of passage for a Jewish 13 year old, the Bar Mitzvah gives a speech or "D'var Torah" relating the biblical text to their own lives and passions.
Duncan used this time to speak about an issue he cares deeply about. . .after hearing his message, you will, too.

This little chap made my day. It's so impressive the way Americans raise their children to use their minds and question the world around them. Kids his age in the UK have trouble even holding a normal conversation without using the f- word.

Duncan is my friend, and his speech does involve the Torah, he was clearly comparing marriage rights now and then. If you want to disrespect him, think about what you are saying to a smart, intelligent, and kind 13 year old who was just talking about something he cared deeply about.

There are so many ignorant people out there Michael, just wanting to say silly stupid hateful things with no thought at all as to what they're saying. Pay them no mind for they have no mind anyway. Your friend gave a beautiful and thoughtful speech! If anything I pity anyone who in their anger and hatred and bigotry search for reasons to deny others the freedoms that all AMERICANS are entitled to. Thank heaven that they are LOSING their fight to deny rights to others and they don't like that but that is their misfortune. You have a great friend indeed and your expression of support for him speaks well of your friendship!

***** You do know that their other ways for LGBT people to have sex right? Have you ever heard of Filiatio or Cunniligus? Besides, heterosexual people also can have anal sex, which I don't really care one way or the other because its the business of the couple having it not mine. And more to the point you can be straight and still be a champion of equal rights. The problem here is that LGBT people are confusing and scary to you and hate them because of it. They are people like you and I who just want to find love and share it with someone. It doesn't affect you in anyway so quit trying to being a close-minded bigot and become a little three dimensional.

Fellow native Oregonian, (now transplanted to Texas) here. Very impressive! One of the best speeches I have heard about marriage equality, especially since he uses their own Bible and their own arguments. Yes, the definition of traditional marriage has changed over time, and it will change again. I can identify with the story of Jacob because I thought I was getting an "ideal marriage" the first time around, and after laboring 44 years, I finally married my "Rachel" in California this year. Wish it could have been Oregon.

You brought tears to my eyes, Duncan! Tears of pride (even though I don't know you), and tears of happiness from knowing that there are young people out there who choose not to be biased or hateful, but to support equal rights to marry! You are clearly a very bright and compassionate young man, and your congregation is lucky to have you with them! (I'm an atheist myself, but when religious "teachings" are kind, giving and supporting, like it seems yours is, I don't mind it one bit!) Keep up the good work, and let that strong, beautiful voice of yours be heard!

These were written by people that not only wrote it for religious purposes, but to push their own opinions on what morals are etc. There are many things written down that today are considered completely unacceptable by today's prevalent morals.

***** I don't consider Jesus as a false prophet , he was a prophet like Moses, from the house of David, born in Bethelehem according to the prophecies for king Herode had the wise men to check it and there for had all the baby boys killed in Bethlehem, says in the Bible ( as also happenend in the time when Moses was a baby). You may call it Avodah Zara, but the Nazarene Jews called him the Messiah and so do the Messianic Jews, that have many congragations in Israel. What I mean with the false prophets is in the times of the kings of Israel. Jeremiah told them what they did not want to hear, so they wanted to kill him, but those that did not speak on behalf of G-d and told them what pleased them to hear where celebrated. The same I see here. G-d loves the people , but hates the sin of practising homo sexuality according to what the Thora tells. You cannot change that because it pleases you.Or because they are nice people.Sin is sin.

39hump According to Torah and Talmud there was no "Jesus". The term used in Talmud is applicable to anyone who tried to be treated as a deity. According to Judaism Jesus might not have existed, we have no record of him, and we kept some pretty good records. Also, you have no proof he existed from the period which he supposedly existed in. Absolutely 0 proof. So I have no idea where you get the "Jews called him Messiah" bit...

Ariel Morgan The Talmud was written about 200 years before Jesus was born. There is no mention of Jesus in the Torah or the Talmud because JUDAISM PREDATES JESUS. Hello? Anybody home? Judaism has nothing to do with Jesus. There is no opinion of Jesus in any Jewish scripture because it all predates him.
