Dumpster Diving - Scrap Metal Don't Stop When It's Cold!

First dumpster diving scrap run of the year, and wow was it ever cold! Just have to layer up and keep moving though, because there is scrap metal to find as long as you don't give up!
Wire stripper I use: amzn.to/3jrO2iS
The motorized stripper: amzn.to/3y0JMuQ
The wire cutters I like: amzn.to/2T6j3OW
This is the cheaper version: amzn.to/2SwrYsB
And here are those grips I recommend: amzn.to/2QCJmYl
(If you make a purchase on amazon through the links above, a small amount of what amazon makes on the sale is shared with me. It's a great way to help support my channel, at no additional cost to you. Even if you buy something other than my tool recommendations!)

Those big motorized fans are worth a fortune come summertime when everyone's sold out of fans. $100 apiece easy just as "build your own house fans". Put that in a window and it's a house-sized amount of airflow. Or for you, cool down a whole garage or a whole house in about 60 seconds. Even just on the floor, or, best, mount it into your attic access blowing into your attic. It creates a heat chimney where all the hottest air in the house rockets out the attic vent, and all the cold air sucks in through lower windows (ideally basement, which will be 13'c year round) and chills the whole house for a lot less than an A/C can. They'll have multiple wires, each one will be a different speed, so you don't need hurricane force all the time you can just toggle a lower speed.

I'm a rookie scrapper here in the pelican state. So far all I've scrapped was tin house siding, copper wire and tubing, steel bike frames and frame sections and aluminum soda cans. I'm even scrapping a lot of parts from my old Pontiac Sunfire coupe. Anyway, love the videos, dude. 👍🏼

Foam board to insulate your garage! at 16:09. Not that your truck wasn't full enough! Foam Board 2" thick some 2 1/4 drywall screws with a 1/4 inch washer stacked on em does good, since 2019 I'm using 400 gallons less propane to heat my 1890-1915 house! Used up 30+ 4 X 8 2" thick panels. Happy 2022!

The area I live in has a population of 235,000 people. I would think even during winter it would be easy enough to come up with some kind of scrap material. All I get is the police called on me for suspicious behavior even though I'm dumpster diving. It's easier for me to get ewaste off people so I go that route to have something to do. Low and mid grade boards local to me are 25 cents per pound. I can't complain. I guess deep down I do complain a lot is depression related which I need prayer on that issue

It's really cold in freedom units as well. Where I live when someone walks up on your scrap find like that there could be trouble they usually try to intimidate me and run me off. It doesn't work. I always try to leave something for the next guy but I have a full time job.

  • @thubprint

    @thubprint

Thankfully I almost never run into anyone trying to start a fight! I don’t think leaving something for the next guy would come across properly tbh. People who take the top part off a bbq or just clip the cord on a tv could say they’re “leaving something for the next guy”, but that’s just a lie to help them feel better about taking the easy part and leaving a useless piece of trash behind for someone else to clean up. My commitment is to the person who put something out for scrap, their generosity came with the assumption that the scrapper would make it disappear. That’s part of what I’m talking about, leaving it better than you found it 👍

I take it you had the green light to take all that stuff at the very beginning of the video that was up against the building and not in an actual dumpster. Or were those big cardboard boxes their ""dumpsters""? I give you props for your tenacity in getting out in that bitter cold.

Yup, I know the people in that establishment and that stuff was there for scrappers. If I wasn’t trying to be a good example I’m not sure I would’ve left the house in that, haha!

I know you're a very good example. I was not assuming that at all.. that's why I said "I take it". Those folks are very generous for scrappers. There was a good amount of metal there for the taking. That's a nice "honey hole" for you to check on time-to-time.

Have you ever gutted a water heater? I feel like there'd be a decent amount of copper in one.

I don't believe there is any copper inside a hot water tank. Just a plastic dip tube and glass lining

Hello, nice videos, I really like it! :) Unfortunately in our country (Slovakia) you will not find even a bolt. Everyone here knows, that all kinds metals are valuable. In my country is searching some bins wasting of time, because there are only material, that does not have any value. :( Also no one will throw any metail in front of his house, for someone to take it for free :(

Hi Thub , can you answer me a question I have pondered a while please ? Here in England , the water tank immersion heater type things are copper tanks on the inside , are those that you get there and many scrappers in USA not ?

  • @thubprint

Yours are copper?? That’s so cool! I don’t think ours are, these ones just have a natural gas burner underneath the water reservoir so there’s just a teeny copper line and that’s it

I'm just curious, when you dumped the stuff off of the truck, does it get weighed after that? Then they pay you? Do you have to tell them what stuff is yours in the pile? Or does it get weighed before you dump it?
