I would love to see this with a more common i.e. cheaper amp, The two rock is capable of conjuring some of those tones on its own, so it is kind of redundant. I love your vids and work so please take this as constructive criticism. Please let us hear this type of shoot out with like a blues deville or a jet city city amp, something inexpensive and readily available, hell a boss katana would work as well.

Dr. if you want most of the individual videos of any one of these pedals, you'll see it's almost always through a Hot Rod Deville or Hot Rod Deluxe. The intent here, and I appreciate and understand your feedback, is to differentiate them and provide some backstory on the differences and how the might react single coil vs. humbucker. I agree it's a good amp, but it's not really capable of overdrive along the lines of these pedals and we tried to set it as neutrally as possible as a clean amp platform. Thanks for watching!

Just got the HRM on special from Sweetwater. I can't believe how well this thing can go from clean barely pushed to full on hot Marshall drive. The Accent and Ratio knobs are extremely powerful. Replaced a low gain OD and a medium gain mosfet distortion and still ended up with more flexibility. Put a TS in front and it will do classic metal pretty well. Very inspiring pedal.

Presently using your original bigger Clean Drive. I've recently decided to simplify my board. Im using a volume pedal, compression, Clean Drive, reverb (I like the pedal better than the amp's 'verb). I'm using a traditional Tele with a treble bleed into a Deluxe Reverb with a speaker upgrade. All these pedals are always on. I bounce between Country twang and edge-of-breakup Blues sounds. I use the guitar's volume control like a gain. For Country, I cut it back, open up the volume pedal. For Blues, I open up the guitar all the way, and feather the volume pedal back. I like things as simple as can be... and this rig hit the nail on the head. I can control everything at the guitar and I only have to work the volume pedal... don't have to do the effects dance... The Deluxe has a great sound w/o effects, but adding the Clean Drive is like icing on the cake... it makes a great thing even better. Suggestion... next time you have Tim do samples, please use a backing track, or bring in a band... it would embellish Tim's work, and free him up. He sounded stiff, put on the spot... You do great work Mason, and your videos have educated me so. I will be purchasing more of your gizmos.

Lowell George, David Lindley and Rick Vito have actually been my favourite Dumble users. :-) Anyway, I still think you should put an UltraPhonix and a Steel String in one box as a dual where you either stack or toggle between each side. That would be a killer box for a small board to use with backline.

That actually would be a killer pedal. A Vertex Dual Overdrive where you can use the SS side of the Ultra Phonix side or turn of both sides at once and stack them. That would be sick and I would definitely buy it. Especially because I own them and know that the SS stacks incredibly well with any pedal you pair it with.

I purchased one of those Ultraphonics pedals after hearing several demos. When I got it I played it through three different amps one being a fender solid state black face style amp. A quilter and a small tube amp. And every one of them it had a very flubby muddy sound to me. And I really am wanting to love that pedal and purchase one again. I've since got a new amp and I'm looking into another one. I mostly played Blues with the occasional Rock but that never got me into Led Zeppelin Aerosmith territory which probably isn't what it was designed to do. But I do love the sound of that pedal for Blues. Almost scared to pull the trigger again on one though because my first experience wasn't pleasant.

It would be nice if vertex made a dumble pedal that worked with the effect loop. When adjusting the tone circuit on various amplifiers to be at a FLAT response and use the dumble pedal in the effects loop this will add the tone circuit, harmonics and compression of the dumble. Try working on a guitar pedal like this to get that dumble tone in an effects loop with the amplifiers tone controls set at a flat response.

  • @VertexEffectsInc

I use the Ultraphonix as an always-on pedal at low gain, it gives my Blackface Deluxe clone (great on its own) a sweetness that I like. I use a Supro Drive and a Proanalog fuzz for distortion, but still with the Ultraphonix on. Great pedal from a 42 year player tone snob lol.

There is something I'm longing for in the tone which I hear and feel in some of the better original Dumble tube amps, and it's an effortless, punchy tone. It's like a force that pulls the tone from the pickups without resistance. There's less of that resistance in the SSS, but that seems more electronic than the analog lack of resistance which I speak of. So far, the SSS has more of that soul on the transients, but not the effortless sustain like the first pedal in the video. The clean drive pedal has somewhat of a hifi character which I've not associated with Dumble's average amp tone. Maybe there's value in the vintage parts and alloys.

Hi Mason and G'day from Australia ...love watching and learning from your videos so thank you.!👍 I am soon to be purchasing a "SSS Steel String Supreme" pedal from Deluxe Guitars my go to store for the better high end stuff, just a quick question is it a pedal to run at first of input or after all my drives then into the amp.? I am using a Temple Audio board with all the modules and such. I am 1st going into a Polytune, into Strymon Riverside (using a Basilisk midi-control unit to utilise drives with certain fx patches from TC X5 and using Strymon Midi to 1/4TRS into Basilisk with midi out into the X5. My Riverside "out" then goes into a Hughes and Kettner Tube-Factor, then the out from the Tube Factor in to a BOSS NS2 into an ART CLEANBOX II(to get rid of most of the 60c hum and it works) then out to either my Fender Twin or Various ENGL Thunder and Screamer amps. X5 goes straight to FX loops of the ENGLs and if i use the Twin Reverb i utilise the BOSS NS2 send/return and it seems to balance the FX level to the FENDER TWIN perfectly into front of this particular amp. Sorry for such a lengthy question, but the SSS, in my set up, "where should i place it" for better objective of the pedal: "after the Polytune" or after all "drives" then to the ART CLEANBOX, or straight to the amp/s.? Thanks Mason and once again sorry for long question. Keep up the gr8 work and best regards.

I'm trying to put effects pedals in fender and marshall amplifiers effects loops to try to make the amplifiers create more clean glassy texas tones. I have tried using the Vertex Dumble pedals in the effects loops of various fender amps and marshall amplifiers to see if the Vertex dumble pedals might create extra clean glassy texas tones in the effects loop to boost and pass frequencies and compress the frequencies to create more clean glassy texas tones. I have been experimenting using a cheap $20 behringer EQ peal and Behringer Compressor pedal to try to get more clean glassy texas tones in the effect loops. I have also tried using a Tube Screamer pedal with the DRIVE set at zero and just using the Tube Screamer as a Mid boost in the Effect Loop. Maybe Vertex can make a pedal to be only used in the effect loops to really enhance that amplifiers preamp to create and boost those glassy texas tones.

@@VertexEffectsInc I will look into that because I think if you use an reactive load unit instead of the speakers and then plug that reactive load into the 2 note unit it should have the EVM12L IR. SRV super reverb used 4 X 10 inch JBL which gave him more of a glassy clean tones compared to the stock fender speakers which confused me because I have played fender super reverbs with stock fender speakers but those JBL 10inch speaker he used made it more Glassy Cleans. SRV dumble used 4X12 EVM12L speakers. Check out the IR list of 2 note or other IR pedals they should have a dropdown menu of cabs and IR's but have to search out the speakers they SRV used in his fender, Marshall, Dumble cabinets. I think the Vertex Steel String using an fender amp with a reactive load then to a IR unit set with either SRV JBL 10inch 4X10 or EVM12L 4X12 cabs will get closer to those SRV tones. Its something to try out and make a video one day when you get the setup.

OK so is the only difference in Steel String Singer and SSS, the fact that the SSS has an extra channel for going into computers and doing computer stuff? If you dont do that direct computer stuff, and just use real amps, is there any difference in the tone and range of what it does sound wise? Do you got to use ith with amp set totally clean? What if you got a little bit of tube amp gain on also, just a little bit?

  • @VertexEffectsInc

The Steel String Supreme has an extra channel with more EQ and tone shaping options beyond just the standard Steel String. The Steel String channel on the SSS is the same as the Steel String MKII. You don't have to use the SSS direct if you don't want to, it work just as well into an amplifier as well. Most people use the SSS into a tube amp.

Some people think that Bonamassa-like tones summarize what a Dumble-like overdriven tone should sound, but to me a good Dumble overdrive simulator should offer the three patterns. The demo seems to show only Bonamassa-like (mid-boosted, treble-attenuated) one. Sorry for the non-scientific explanation, but I hope I could better explain my question on the first message.

In some case, like "Slow Dancing..." seems easier/better to play without it. The SRV is also a challenge, the expectation is to get closer than my skill/patience to tweak it; perhaps that is why you got a new version missing here, the SSS/SRV. SRV used a Modified Dumble amplifier that was owned by Jackson Browne. Jackson Browne says that the Dumble Amplifier was made for him as a special order from Dumble which was used on SRV first album only. So I don't know if Jackson Browne dumble amplifier had 6L6 or EL34 or what is different because he claims its not a stock normal dumble. The Cathode Follower circuit in the dumble power amplifier is what dumble is claiming to give that glassy sparkle texas clean tones. I think SRV liked the Dumble amps because he can "roll down" his strat volume to 6 or 7 and crank the dumble amp up which it has a lot of clean headroom without distorting or breaking up. Most of your demos have the guitars volume at 10 and needs to be at 6 or 7 to get those SRV glassy texas clean tones with the dumble amp cranked adding natural tube compression.

This is more of a differentiators video between the pedals, if you want to watch some of the tones that explicitly go after the JM tone, I'd watch one our videos that really trying to dial that in: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iq2GlM-PYdvTlLA.html

The descriptive talking is fine but the playing examples suck as he never changes the knobs so you can hear anything. Its really more of a demonstration of his playing.

Some pedels are way to complicated for a musician that has already eight pedels on his board. You want something more simple. For players that are going to just mess with one pedel to play some of these would be good.

That’s not the aim of the video or it’s intent. And, wouldn’t that be a more appropriate video for someone more objective, e.g. doesn’t manufacture pedals - or at least Dumble-inspired pedals?

They all have some differences but also have a lot more overlap than some give them credit for. There is a signature sound there despite being voiced for certain players.

Would be a great shootout to do with a dealership or someone that carries several Dumble style pedals...the purpose of this video is to distinguish the differences between our models as many customers are confused and when they hear the word "Dumble" they thing Robben Ford (often). This is a tool for us to reference them to so they understand the difference between each model and a sonic reference for each.

Vertex is the most authentic imho and most respected when pursuing that “Dumble” thing I own 73 distortions, fuzzes and ODs From my 44 years studio and stage as a professional guitarist I have original fuzz faces, tube screamers, maxon, ocd (more modern) 3 first run proco rats, EH, boss,ect...😬 And I love different ones for different needs Vertex has something a bit different to my ear coupled with the right eq, compression and an busy tone pinky (depending on the room) it’s the closest I’ve come to what I “hear” from Dumble although to be fare I have never played through one
