Dumb Decisions: The STUPIDEST TIMEOUT of Week 18 | Texans @ Colts (2023)

Спорт

I actually didn't hate the play call. The decision to take a timeout right before that, though? What a time for Shane Steichen to screw up
During week 18 of the 2023 NFL season, the Houston Texans played the Indianapolis Colts in a win-and-you're-in game to make it to the playoffs. And with the Colts having all three of their timeouts with under two minutes to go, facing fourth and one, the Colts decided, for some reason, to burn a timeout, thereby ensuring the fact that a failed play would end their season and prevent them from getting the ball back. Spoiler alert- it did not work out. This is a breakdown of that dumb decision

I should note that if this game ended in a tie, the Texans would've been out on the spot and the Colts would've been a Jaguars win away from being eliminated. As for this game, Steichen really messed up there. He needed to make sure thibgs were right before his offense even lined up. He cut off his team's margin for error with that timeout. As for the Colts' rushing attack, it lost steam in the 4th quarter, rushing for only 2.5 yards per carry in that quarter.

Yeah that was pretty dumb. I was like "why are they calling timeout!" in my high-pitched JG9 voice😂. Hopefully you will also hit Harbaugh's asinine clock management at the end of the Steelers Ravens game. Bmore was down by 10 with about a minute left and one timeout but they had driven down the field and they well within FG range. But instead of kicking right away, Harbaugh let the clock run almost all the way down before they called TO and finally kicked the FG. I mean the odds were against them but even if they recovered the onside kick, he left them with only enough time to try a hail Mary instead of giving them a shot at running a few plays and at least getting closer to the end zone. Head scratching stuff from a guy who in recent years has become a serial DD'er.

I dont hate the timeout. The strategy from the start of that drive was run the ball, score a TD and leave no time for Houston to score. What you don't do is take the game out of your best player off the field with the season on the line. Choosing to trust Minshew and your 4th string RB was the mistake. Everyone was keyed in on Taylor on third and 2 and he still got a yard. Taylor also opens up a play action. Play action brings in the possibility of Pittman who has made several clutch contested catches this year and is your best reciever. Or Downs who has also made clutch catches and just set the Colts franchise record for catches by a rookie. I support Steichens strategy of winning or losing on the drive. Its not even the play. The dumb decision was to take your most dominant player off the field when the stakes were highest. Even if you weren't going to go to him, he would have commanded all kinds of attention. On top of that to run a play for your 10th best threat, who has no clutch plays is just dumb.

I remember thinking that maybe the *Texans* should’ve called a TO around the 1:40 mark, since the Colts had a excellent chance of converting 4th-and-1 and now the Texans’ objective should be to leave themselves as much time as possible to get into field goal range should the Colts score a TD. I was a little surprised when they didn’t do that. But when the Colts did what they did, I started seeing a Dumb Decisions™️ video in our future.

You, JG9, did an great analysis on the subject. Many people are discussin the playcall, calling "forth and none". But the question was the use of the timeout and using it after letting the play clock go to 0. That was a DD worthy episode. That is a shame that happenned with a coach that was doing really well when there were others doing every thing to ruin your team chances. But that is live. We are humans and are subject to errors. This season was great for the Colts and Texans. They are going in the right direction. Maybe the AFC South could become a great division in the near future. As for the 2024 season, I think the Colts will take a little step back, but the future is bright. Greatings from Niterói, Brazil.

You could’ve had Taylor out there as a decoy. Since you know the Texans were keyed on him, use him as a decoy and then pass to another guy for the first down if not more. It would be like USC-Texas when Reggie Bush wasn’t in the game and the Longhorns stopped Lendale White. Had Bush been in there, Texas would’ve been trying to decide who to stop and it would’ve caused confusion.

I imagined that this was going to be featured in Dumb Decisions. The Colts had been executing their strategy of making that the last drive of the game very well, but they took it a bit too far by putting themselves in the worst of all scenarios (instead of lining up quickly, seeing the Texans coverage and calling a timeout or consuming the clock and running a play without calling a timeout). Right after the Colts called timeout I told my brother "damn that's a very bad decision by the Colts" and he just nodded in disbelief of what was happening.

  • @Torgonius

My very first thought while watching that debacle was "I know there's going to be a dumb decisions video on this" With all 3 timeouts, go try the field goal with 1:40ish left on the clock. You can make it a 3 point game, and get the ball back with over a minute to go and only needing a FG to tie. You know Houston is going to run the ball into the line 3 straight plays, then punt. As a Steeler fan, though, I was rooting for the tie :)

Imo, kicking the field goal on 4th and 1 from that spot would have been a significantly dumber decision than taking the timeout (even though the timeout was undeniably stupid). Your probability of getting a three-and-out on defense and then scoring points on the ensuing drive is way lower than the probability of converting the 4th and 1 (65% chance or so), then getting at most 15 extra yards with four downs to get a TD to take the lead and then hold on defensively with limited time remaining.

I would have decided to win or lose with my best player in that situation, Jonathan Taylor. Still the ball should have been caught. If they had called timeout immediately following the 3rd down play, I still wouldn't have liked it, but it's not as bad as running the play clock all the way down then using the timeout.

  • @Kd4c
    @Kd4c6 ай бұрын

The timeout is only a dumb decision because they dropped the pass. If he catches the pass and barring any turnoves,, no one cares he called a timeout. I do think he should have went with the play instead of calling the time out. But I don't think calling the time out there is terrible although by not picking up the fourth down essentially ends the game. Looking back, calling the timeout when he did was the dumb decision. If he had called it thirty seconds earlier they still would have had time to get into hail mary range.

You missed the fact that Taylor ran out of bounds untouched on second down when he could have gotten another yard or two and run the clock. The timeouts are IRRELEVANT in this case because there was not going to be enough time left for the Colts after a Texans PUNT if the Colts don''t get a touchdown. No problem with the the timeout there at all. Taylor should have had that first down on his own.

I think I have to object. While it was questionable, and removed all margin for error, it did necessarily appear dumb from the start. Remember, the Colts also tried to get the Texans to jump prior to calling the TO. You're even considering an IDO on the play call, and, except for the errant throw and Goodson's drop, the play didn't backfire. Goodson catches that pass, or the Colts successfully draw the Texans offside (which had already worked at least once) and you're not even making this video (which means it doesn't fit the premise). The Colts could have called the TO earlier in the play click, as well, and would have had that many more seconds when they did get the ball back - not sure why they didn't fair catch the free kick and let the offense try for the miracle finish, but the result would likely have been the same.

Using the timeout on offense when you should have saved it so that if you didn't get it you could use 3 timeouts on defense, get a 3 and out, and have about 50 seconds left to get a score. Do I think they would have scored? No. But, you've got to give yourself that puncher's chance. Dumb decision 2 is not using Johnathan Taylor. It's 4 and 1. See if he can get 1 yard RUNNING.

I have noticed that this series has overall become a lot more nitpicky. When I first started following you and watching this series, I was DUMBFOUNDED at the decisions some of these coaches made and their explanations for their decisions. Now with some of the newer episodes (like this one), I feel like this type of thing only feels immediately obvious to someone who's really watching the clock and/or the coach during the game. NFL fans that aren't as savvy on clock management wouldn't have caught this mistake by Shane Steichen. Which means this is now a type of thing that looks bad "in hindsight" to most fans I still think you do an amazing job with these videos, and Shane Steichen should've been more aware in that moment without a doubt. Ive just noticed this series overall shift in this direction and thought I should leave this comment to point that out Maybe "clock management mishaps" should become a series that's separate from "Dumb Decisions"

I don’t usually abide by this conservative mindset, but knowing that you’re only down by 6, why not kick the FG? Think about it: if you take the timeout IMMEDIATELY after the failed JT run and then kick the FG (from chip shot range in a dome), you’re down by only a FG If you get a stop on defense, you’ll have over a minute to drive down the field for at LEAST a game tying FG w/ TWO timeouts TBF, I also don’t mind going for it there because there’s no guarantee you get the ball back All Steichen had to do was call a timeout as soon as the play ended (alternatively, they could’ve called a 3rd Down pass that would’ve ensured that the clock would stop if it fell incomplete)

This is not a Dumb Decision here when the play call was right and Taylor was on the bench for the 4th and 1. I'm not saying that the Colts win the game even if they get the TD there because Stroud has had 4 game-winning drives in his rookie season ALREADY. Sorry for your Jaguars man😃😃😃
