⚓️Duluth's 1949 Ship Sykes: 2023's Greatest Show!
Ойын-сауық
The 678-foot ship "Wilfred Sykes" passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge on 12/28/2023 as it headed for Lake Superior in Duluth, MN!
Boat Friends, this ship earned the Best Show of the Year award after this departure! The conditions were absolutely fantastic with a cloudless blue sky and perfect lighting to see this ship make the most memorable departure of the season. I could see the old-school pilothouses as the ship started to appear on my camera in the Duluth Harbor Basin. I could easily tell this was a classic Great Lakes Laker by its overall look and design! I made sure to zoom in and point out the steering pole and other features on this vessel that look really cool.
As I was recording the ship approaching the Aerial Lift Bridge, Captain Lori Reinhart blasted the horn to provide a full salute to the bridge. A few seconds later the Aerial Lift Bridge returned a full horn salute to the ship. Then, Captain Reinhart did a special fleet-specific full-horn salute a few seconds later! As the ship made its way to Lake Superior the captain did another two separate full-horn salutes! It was absolutely incredible and everyone was so thrilled along the south pier! You could literally feel the excitement in the air!
I immediately knew because of the overall conditions, the ultra-rare ship appearance in Duluth, and the incredible horn performance from the captain, this was the Best Show of the Year from a ship in Duluth!
I don't want to forget to mention that this ship is very historic as well! The Sykes loaded right next to the Edmund Fitzgerald at the ore docks in Superior (Wisconsin) before it headed out on Lake Superior into a 1975 storm in which it sank, and left no survivors. The Sykes departed only two hours after the Fitzgerald and took a completely different route. Unbelievable history attached to the Wilford Sykes because of its connection to the Fitzgerald.

This video of the Wilfred Sykes was recorded yesterday 12/28 and not only is this ship unbelievably cool, but it’s very historic as well. It was the last ship to load next to Edmond Fitzgerald. This vessel departed two hours after the Fitzgerald in 1975 from the same loading dock in Superior. Just that alone is unbelievable to think about. Captain Lori Reinhart is in charge of the Sykes and she put on the best show of 2023 from a horn and overall cool ship standpoint!

Oh my gosh, Mike, how fun was that?! What a cool captain! Quite the show! And the ship! Wow! I wasn't familiar with it. What a history and what a nice looking ship!! You must have been so giddy filming this! And can you believe this scene is the end of December?! As much as I like snow, I am not complaining one bit over here. 😊 Great video Mike! I really enjoyed seeing the captain too! This video is definitely a favorite!

Captain Lori brought it! Thank you Mike, I didn’t know she was loading next to the Fitzgerald on that day. I learned something new! Fun video.
Wow, a lady captain of a huge great lakes bulk carrier. It is very good to see a lady captain of a ship. Captain means many years of experience, training, knowledge, credentials and a lot of responsibility.
In my opinion the most beautiful ship on the lakes. I love it. 4 salutes!
Best Salutes from a very beautiful old school Ship. Best ❤📣📣👍👍

I hope you’re having a great Friday. Your profile photo is so beautiful with that sunset. Hey, this captain stepped up and made it the coolest ship departure of the year in Duluth.
Seeing this incredible seventy five year old ship, Wilfred Skye's, hearing the horns telling all I'm here, with three last additional sounding of the horns to say, 'I'll be back'. What a testament to incredible engineering of the day this ship was designed and built. Think seventy five years of all that which this vessel was subject to, to see it today earning its keep with the maritime company operating this beautiful vessel. Another wonderful video to end the year, 2023!

The sky was beautiful and blue, and the ship was fantastic
Starting at 6:19, you can see a white small swinging boom near the rear of the pilot house. It is used to hoist items from the main deck up to the 3rd level. You can see another swinging boom starting at 7:18. It's directly above the 'W' in Wilfred. Very helpful to haul up goods to the main deck. This video ranks way up there for me! Thanks so much Captain Lori for that very, very rare set of 4 salutes. Will be so memorable for all of us Boat Friends.

Hi Chuck, Thanks for pointing out the swinging boom. I'd like to get your opinion about this. I was watching this video today of the Saginaw: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yq6Kr5eqXd3bn84.htmlfeature=shared You can see it's swing boom on the starboard-side of the bow beginning at 2:00, and some good views of the bow thrusters at 2:16, 3:20, and 7:19. At 3:48 you can see some deck hands being swung out and lowered with the swing boom. Is this pretty common practice? On the Wilfred Sykes the swinging boom looks more centrally located near the bow (probably for hoisting to the 3rd level of the super structure, as you said), and the boom near its stern looks to be set too far back to be practical for off-loading deck hands. Is off-loading deck hands with the swinging boom pretty common? Thanks.
Thanks Mike! Captain Lorie! Great old ship!!!
She likes her horn. Way to go capt lori

I knew that name sounded familiar! Thanks for making that Edmund Fitzgerald connection for us, Mike. A much better decision made that fateful day by the Sykes’ Captain Paquette. And here she is, still getting ‘er done! Thanks, Captain Lori, for giving us all a treat with the horn action. I was thinking today that it would be cool to have the length of the different ships marked on the railing, of the north pier by the museum, to put the length in prospective . Maybe start by the lift bridge and go all the way to the 1013 foot mark with markers, that could be seen from both ends, for the most common ones that come to the port. Just a thought.
I used to work off of the cuyahoga river at a coal processing plant used to seeing this glorious machine about every other week or so. Have awesome pictures if anyone wants them.

LOL that would be a hoot for sure!!!👍
Hi Mike what can i say its absolutely fantastic this vessel, one more i never have seen before, and what a horn concert the female captain gave us. I love also the painting of the Wilfred Sykes, one of the only fee ship with the green color on it. Best regards to Captain Lori Reinhardt in the name of all boat ethusiasts....
Sometime in the last 2 years, the smoke stack was repainted with a red accent around the top of the funnel. You can see this starting at 7:10. For those with a high resolution monitor, you can make out 'Cliffs' across the middle portion of the funnel. This is because the ship was chartered by the Cleveland Cliffs Steel Company...and red has always been a part of their markings. Smoke stacks are a huge source of pride by crews. Its a big deal for them. They make sure they are painted correctly!! What follows is the most current business situation for the Sykes: Owner: Indiana Harbor Steamship Co., IN Operator: Central Marine Logistics, Griffith, IN [chartered to Cleveland-Cliffs] And speaking of Cleveland Cliffs, I sure hope they remain an American company. I don't want them to be acquired by the Japanese company Nippon Steel who has made an offer to buy US Steel. This is a big deal and hot subject Boat Friends.
