DUKE'S FIRST TIME SPREADING MANURE! // Training Draft Horses
Today is Duke's first time spreading manure and he is doing great! Duke is one of our Suffolk Punch draft horses. This is a great step in his training process, because the manure spreader is very noisy.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

I have 2 other brothers, and it was always funny when Mom was yelling at one of us, and she would sometimes go through all 3 names before she named the culprit in trouble. And if she included your middle name and last name, you knew you were in trouble.

I can't believe how well Duke went on his first time! Great training, and that Ken is worth his weight in gold.
Memory goes first; then we learn tricks to remember better. You are alright! The other trick is Not to get upset which makes it worse.
Skip is growing so fast. So at 21:48 when Duke hears the skidder coming, and he kinda turns his head to Ken as to ask "What's going on?" Ken seems to lean his head against Duke in a reassuring manner to say "It's okay little man, we are going to get this done, you will do great!" Ken is a 'one in a million' trainer horse! He is the true meaning of a gentle giant. It's like he is has taken each of the new Suffolks under his wing and molded them into great draft horses! Duke did such a great job! I can't wait to see Earl's performance in his upcoming training sessions. Lastly, when Jim is unhitching them and bringing them into the barn, I LOVE how Skip is setting by the door watching the coming and goings like he is supervising the whole process. LOVE all your content, keep it coming!

I noticed that too, when Ken leaned his head against Duke, and thought the same thing.

I thought the same about Ken, but you said it better. Ken lost his team partner this year, but gained a new role at which he is excelling.
They look so regal coming out of the barn
Hey Brenda, That was a close call, Even John Deer won't stand behind their manure spreader. (🙂)
Huge difference between the first and second load, repetition is the key to success
Watching Duke's ears while Jim is running the skidstear 😊
I can’t tell Duke and Earl apart since Jim shaved off Earl’s frizzy bangs ;-)
Judging by Duke’s breathing he found the experience stressful but despite that he was amazing.
We had 6 kids, it sounded like a rosary prayer! Usually only one of us was in trouble, but we all waited around to see who it was! Noticed Ken was nonplussed in the manure wagon maneuvering
Thank you Jim and Brenda. If each horse has a color code harness ribbon you do not even have to think about It😂❤❤
So cute, Duke wanting to already walk to the water after his work like , wat do you mean who stop??
As you get older, it's called "sometimers". Sometimes you remember & sometimes you don't. LOL. Peace ✌️
Duke's coat was so pretty gleaming in the sun while unhitching the manure spreader. He calmed right down and caught his breath when Brenda went to hold him. Coming right along. Good training on the colts Jim.
It's amazing how the little doggie have no fear at all to big horses.
The human aspect is just one of the reasons your videos are so loved!
❤ the colts are really calm but if something scares them they can become hard to handle,Jim knows that as well as anyone
I am extremely impressed with the calm demeanor, willingness to work but most of all the way Barron, Duke and Earl listen and respond.

Brenda I would like to see someone taking video of you taking a video because you are the smoothest!
The puppy's boundless energy is hysterical. It's too fun watching him cavort in and out of the frame.
Am I the only person who has got their rubber boots stuck in the mud while walking behind the horses and had them pull me right out of my boots into the mud? Lol. I find Jim's voice very soothing when he talks to his horses. The horses must find that too.
Skippy is growing like a weed and it looks like he loves to run along with the horses but keep his distance. The best of the Season to you all.
Here is how to tell the horses apart, Bree is the smallest (for now), Baron is stocky and has a flowing mane, Duke is lighter in colour, while Earl is darker. Lady had a distinctive pattern on her face and a plain tail, Bill has a curly tail and is smaller than Lady, Ken is black ! The other four legged animals outside are cows, Skip is a dog, the cats have longer tails and are fluffy and the chickens have two legs and love Brenda.

That's funny
Thank you for the tour of the tile work. Enjoyed that Ken was such a good partner/teacher for Duke.
It's nice to see the progress of the colts. But I am super impressed with Skippy staying so close even in the woods. With all the smells out there it's so easy for a dog to get distracted and lost. He's also already learned to stay out of the way of the horses. You picked a good one and his training as a farm dog is keeping up with the colts.
Ken’s such a good boy
What a treat to get a birds eye view of the farm. It’s a really nice perspective. Duke is really doing well.
Great video, Duke is doing very well! Love the drone footage
Hi Jim, Brenda, Another great video! Duke,&Ken Did great spreading manure, the noise did not even bother Duke! Jim, thanks for the bird's eye view of your beautiful farm, I enjoy it very much! Jim, Nova Scotia, Canada. Hi to Trudy, & Abby
What a kind, Life-giving/loving couple; plus the big and little workers! 😊
I just love Ken!!
Nice stuff, muddy here too, but stiffened up some since we had a bit of snow the other day. Had the sleigh out for the first time this morning and got some footage before it all melts next week! Calling for warm the week of Christmas. You only need to start off once with a green team and a line hooked wrong to learn fast ! Last thing I do is check the lines, it is easy to snap a line wrong when mixing and switching up horses/harness. Hope you eventually get a freeze to try out the pond for skating.
I absolutely loved today's video so many different things. Glad to see you have your drone back for an exciting bird's eye view of your property and surrounding areas! Speaking for myself and I'm sure others watching we really appreciate the time and effort you make letting us share a tiny bit of your impossibly busy lifes❣️ Thank You both.
tHAT BEAUTIFUL LITTLE DOG LOOKS LIKE HE WILL BE A VERY GOOD FARM DOG.
you're so humble,,,and good teacher..good old Kenny g.does well and makes us laugh ,he always deserves a little fresh hay for helping in the training. the pond and tiles are a super job....wow,!the yard surely will need another huge load of gravel in the spring..❤❤❤❤❤❤
Jim please do not take this wrongfully, I am 70 years old and have worked since I was 13 around a lot of different folks from all over the world including with my father in the bush when I was younger. I think you speak well on your videos but can tell speaking and working at the same time does not come naturally to you. I think you are like my father was that way. You are use to working hard all your life and are well adapted to thinking to yourself as you work through the processes and problems of the day. But I am certain you have no problems giving mindful quick directions to folks when you are working and I bet when the day's work pauses for lunch or supper you chat along like anyone. This being said I would like to thank-you very much for taking time to explain some things you do and why you do cause I know this all adds time to your day. We really appreciate you and Brenda sharing and showing and teaching you guys are a wonderful couple and team . Your videos show real life, teach things and every video is great and a wonderful diversion from the troubled times of the world today. Thanks again. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Wonderful New Year.
Looks like Skippy has already learned one important farm lesson. DO NOT be behind the manure wagon when it’s spreading. It got close to him he hightailed to get out of the way.😅
Your horses are so well trained and calm It makes training look easy which it is not.❤❤❤❤.
Wow the fly over the farm is amazing
This is how it should be done, slowly and it helps to have a horse like ken who is the mentor for duke to learn from.Jim is a good example of making your horses feel comfortable and hopefully duke will have a good learning experience today.😊
The pond and ditch look like prime places to seed for the pretty bog plants. It was intersting to take a look from above. I'm curious to see the ditches and pond in spring time.
I noticed that when you unhitched from the spreader and started for the barn that Duke was lagging behind. Your encouragement with the folded reins caused him to catch up quickly. Love the training while performing chores. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Merry Christmas!
Always a pleasure to watch the interactions between y'all and the horses. I always enjoy seeing drafts working. Thanks for letting us tag along.
Good drone shots Jim. Very interesting to see the lay of the land. The pup is really active yet careful around the horses. Thank you for sharing.🐴🐴
Duke did AWESOME!! But Skippy, is doing AWESOME TOO, with the horses!! He is going to turn out to be a GREAT DOG!!! I love how he sit with the hoses while Jim is getting the horses ready or untacked. He is doing amazing. WTG Skippy!!!! God Bless Working Horses with Jim
Your horses are so precious, I just love them so much. Ken is so dependable and a great teacher. Little Skippy is learning to stay safe, love how he runs over to Brenda in the field, bet he’s awful muddy at the end of the day. Stay safe and God bless. ❤
I absolutely understand when you say you are on a roll with Duke. You cannot do total justice to both simultaneously. When Duke has done it all and becomes trustworthy, then Earl will get Jim's full attention. I do admire Ken's patience with all these youngsters, shoving and pulling them all about, so calm the colts all kinda know its all really ok. Ken the coacher, Ken the anchor. Seasons Greetings from Australia.
Skippy looks like he has really settle in nicely. Ken is such a steady trainer for the younger horses. Merry Christmas to both of you.
Duke spreading the dook.
Jim, you are getting much more comfortable with the drone. I share your view on seeing the farm from the air. I have had my private pilots license since the early 70's. I never tire of the view. Your memory lapses is par for the course. They tell me it , it comes with age. Stay safe and you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Pup sure growing. In no time at all Duke and Earl will be a team doing chores around the farm 👍
Duke did a great job pulling the spreader with Ken! Skippy is so pretty! I love watching him run around with the horses! It's good seeing how nicely all the tile work is doing. It was cute seeing Baron standing behind his baby girl out in the barnyard! Bree is growing up fast!! Will be so nice come spring when she will have a baby brother or sister, and I hope Lady has a good delivery of her foal like she did with Bree!!! Your temps are warmer than down in northeast Tennessee. Yesterday it only reached 26 for the high.
It was a wonderful video, Jim and Brenda. The two of you continue to produce very educational and exciting videos. We'd love to see your Christmas tree when it's decorated! ❤
nice veiw from the sky love the lay out of the feild ty jim
Really appreciated shots from the air and seeing the interesting pattern of tiling.
Amazing aerial pictures of the tiling... Duke and Earl are like the Master and the Apprentice... always enjoy your videos... Blessings to all ❤❤❤
❤love your video s farming loging. baking .Garden miling.the horses.i still remember the first video i looked .Ken and buck in the snow on a sleeride happy holly days from Holland 🇳🇱
I really appreciated the areal view of the farm. The noon sun adds to the beauty with all the shadows. Nice
Always enjoy your vids thank you Jim and Brenda
You sure have a beautiful place there Jim and Brenda, it looks quiet and peaceful, have a Blessed Christmas .
Hap Bday Sonny from south alabama. Wow Jim,,thanks for showing the tile job and its accomplishment...I was thinking about your drone just today..thanks for the drone footage also.
Love watching the updates to your little piece of Heaven. That Tiling will pay dividends next year. Merry Christmas.
Watching this great video while making Christmas cookies. Love Skippy, the drone shots of the tiling job(!!!), Duke’s awesome firsts in his training, funny Ken at the water trough, and that beautiful filly. That pond will be an excellent skating pond when the weather cooperates. The best of the season to you all.
I always enjoy your videos. Nice to watch you training the y😅boys. Brenda sure gets her exercise taping the videos for you Jim. Merry Christmas 🎄 from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🎄🎄
The aerial view of the tile is really cool.
Looks as though Skippy is having the time of his life on the farm. He’s a very lucky pup! Oh boy, i can relate to memory not being so sharp! Duke did amazingly well with the muck spreading. Great progress! Also really enjoyed seeing the drone footage.
Great video thanks Jim ❤❤❤
1) Elm is HORRIBLE to split! 2) Skippity-do-da is living the dream.
BEAUTIFUL drone video ❤❤
Fröhliche Weinachzeit! Anyone else notice the “Leaning Towers” of the silos? The camera does that to the stalls, too.
What a rewarding life with all that you do with your horses great video happy Holidays
Nice view from the air..
This was another great video! Duke really did well! It's fascinating to me to watch each of them doing different things! Bree is so beautiful! Skippy is just full of energy!! It's getting close to the holidays, so I'll say Merry Christmas to all the Gordon's!! 🎄🎅🎁💕
Thanks for the tour.
That is a sweet puppy
Hello Jim- Thanks for the tour of the farm. The pond looks great! I can see why you need a drainage system. It appears to be working well. Our acreage is mostly on a ridge, but we still have some drainage issues. We have 40 acres in hay fields and average six to seven thousand square bales. Its enough for our Hereford herd and for local customers. Duke was exceptional for his first time out! You have such a gift with training horses. Speaking of patience, I'm standing by with my cup of tea, waiting for New England to get some snow. Here in Central ⛵⛵ Lakes Region New Hampshire, it looks more like spring. There is a chilling wind today, but no flakes in the forecast. Merry Christmas to everyone! ~ Diane
As we all get older we come down with CRS aka Can’t Remember Stuff 😮😅😂
I'll be using those harness videos here soon. So excited. Ken is a great horse
those beautiful horses live to work and love doing it
Here in Saskatchewan canada we are snow bare as well.
Very entertaining and informative. Have a safe and holy Christmas 🎄
It’s ok Jim I have those same days too. We use to spread manure all by hand
So far are these colts doing better than you expected??
Tuesday Dec. 19th in my area the temperature was 56 degrees and no snow.
Wonderful video thank you 😊
Great job I would have guessed it was his first time it always stressful the first time on mower and spreader I have never used a side backer harness I think it would take some time to get used to it
looking at the last scene if you were able to plant some elm on the berm between the drain and the pond it would give some future shade for the ice pond.
It’s 45 here in Fl. Too funny. Unusual weather. Maybe I’ll build a 5” snowman on my car hood again. Yes, watching your handling of equine is cautiously important. Watched a different video by accident and horses were running for their lives. Horrified at their careless treatment. Night and day difference. Whew. Won’t tell you which one, you would be to upset to watch as I am. Thanks again for being responsible for horses and yourselves, both.
🤔good vid, a cute point on horse names etc, when kids were young I had your issue Dad it wasn’t me it was ? Etc 🤭 , colts well trained 👍 tiling segment interesting me thinks you think it was good move, excellent overall view at the end 👍👋👀
I'm in Maine raking white pine branches and cones in my backyard. I started cutting back small unwanted new growth trees and I thought...this silence is wonderful! I then thought of Jim in the woods with two horses, snow and the smell of evergreens. Beautiful.

Hi Sharon, nice to see another Maineiac here. I am now living in IL. Rick
Your horses respond well to your voice. I noticed Ken seemed to steady Duke with a head bump, it's ok, we'll be fine. The drone let's us see the whole picture. Big farm, lots of work. Merry Christmas & Happiest of New Years!
Nem tô vendo o céu tá bonito muito lindo mesmo
I can relate!!!
Skip is doing well with the horses. Happy holidays to you and your family.
Ken is such a good and beautiful horse. Just wanted to ask could you lay some saw dust or something on the ground in the mud and ruts around the barns? All that wet mud just makes me uncomfortable to watch you and horses having to get through.
Great job! I love you show! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!😊❤
I enjoyed very much
Excellent video again enjoyed very much thanks for sharing and have a Merry Christmas everyone
I could see that the colt was breathing hard tied to wall. He was apprehensive about the skid steer and wrenching his neck to see noise source. No problem with manure spreader at all.
That frog should be hibernating by now (yes?). Who is walking in your hay field .Must be you Brenda (yes?) .( 40 min mark ). Seasons Greetings .😊😊😊
