I always enjoy watching videos covering the history of DM in the West. It may surprise you to know that Duel Masters continues to have a small but dedicated following outside Japan. You can find the channels of some of our community's passionate members in our channels section. Thank you for taking the time and effort to research and talk about a game many of us deeply cherish!

I remember offering a deck to my friend for his birthday when I was in France and kids were playing Duel Masters during breaks at school. Even in France, Duel Masters had glorious days and then... No more products in sight 🙁

I’m very skeptical. I would love nothing more for them to just port the Japanese sets into English but with how quickly DM and Kaijudo failed I’m not holding my breath.

Possible? Sure. Likely? Absolutely not. And also not for many years. And not without another name or reboot. I don't even see PLAYS ever happening.

Duel Masters was huge when I was in grade school. I remember people being way more into it than Pokémon. We even played it and it was a ton of fun, we never even attempted to play the Pokémon tcg just collected the cards instead. The game had a resurgence in college at my campus. I think it started with one guy having brought enough cards to play a match with someone and when we remembered how fun it was we made sure to find our old cards at home during the holidays and bring them to college. There were tournaments and everything, it was so fun. Even people who never played it as kids, especially girls, wanted to play it so we shared decks and such. It was also really fun to try being strategic and shake up your deck when it was pretty easy to keep track of your opponents and what they had to work with. Lots of trading too.

Duel Masters and Bakugan was my childhood. I remember I waiting for years for the new episodes, because episode 52 was open ended. We create new rules for the game on the playground, because as hungarian kids we can't understand the english texts, so we just played as we saw in the series😅. It very sad it failed in the west, but this don't change it's special place in my heart and my memories.

So Yu-Gi-Oh started as MTG parody in the manga and become it's own thing, then Duel Masters become a thing because of Yu-Gi-Oh?

Well, no. Wizards of the Coast wanted to release MTG in Japan, but it was made suitable and simplified for Japanese oudianes. It was a success there, and it is the 2nd card game out there next to Yugioh.

You forgot to mention that WOTC didn’t place proper restrictions on the English TCG compared to the OCG and other card games I feel like if they done that they could’ve maybe make it last a little longer WOTC did place restrictions on kaijudo but the way they handle it was pretty poor they only ban one card and that was it like what the hell was that? Do you think banning one card would fix the meta game have they not been paying attention do you have Konami handles Yu-Gi-Oh in terms of how they ban and restrict cards

A year late on this huh? I want to say it's possible, but highly difficult. We have more products on the market, most notably Digimon Card Game. And to have 5 of these card games? I don't think there's really room for it. But I do think Duel Masters deserves a spot. Its shield mechanic is still unique to it. In the Digimon Card Game(TDCG), security cards don't go into your hand unless specified. In DM, it's possible to brick, like any other card game, but you'll always have mana sources to play. Lastly, it doesn't need pen and paper. To me, that's huge, you just need the cards for it, just like Pokémon. You could introduce mechanics that require tokens, but that can be remedied with dice and maybe some playing cards. Of the big three, only two get played, which both need pen and paper. (And one needs a calculator but let's not talk about that.) However, I still think that DM would be playing in a rather crowded market, with more niche card games to come. Outside of a big marketing push from WotC, which isn't happening considering what's happening over there and the world, DM won't find market penetration. And that to me is the worst part of it. Now, I do wish you actually talked about the meta of DM. I haven't played the game, but from what I've heard, because DM was a lower priority product for WotC, it got neglected. To put it in a different light, the meta wasn't being addressed by them, not a restriction or banlist in sight. The competitive meta had devolved to such a toxic state, but nothing was being done about it, which seriously hurt DM as a whole. Couple that with MTG players thinking this was a kiddy game, WotC unknowingly had dug this game's grave for it. And it's a damn shame. It's not an MTG clone. It's a clone of many card game ideas of the era. To fix the prize system from Pokémon, the shield mechanic was made. To fix mana issues, the every card is a resource rule was implemented. You can see many good ideas here. But unfortunately, it came out at a time that was just so unfortunate to it. That's a lot of text. If anyone here actually read all of this, my thanks. That a actually means a lot to me. For those that want a TL;DR: DM is its own game, cloned from the popular card games at the time. It has its own unique and fun set of rules. But, the situation it was surrounded by meant it needed more support, which it never got. I think it deserves another shot, but it needs more support. And I don't think that can happen when this comment was written.
