DUDE! Fix My Base #1 - Oxygen Not Included Space Industry (Juan's Base)

In this series I will be helping people with their bases and trying to fix any major issues. This was recorded during the Space Industry Upgrade for Oxygen Not Included.
Can I help you with your base? Please send me your save file and I'll try to do a video like this for your base. You can send it to me on my Discord server (see link below) or email it to grindthisgame@gmail.com
Save files on windows are usually in this location:
C:\Users\Username\Documents\Klei\OxygenNotIncluded\save_files
Juananp sent me his save file and said he was having issues with oxygen and CO2 building up. I check out his base and try to fix the following:
- add more oxygen generation
- improve airflow so trapped CO2 can escape
- overlapping schedules
- overloaded wires
- plumbing setup
- made a more sustainable food farm (mushrooms vs. bristle)
- open up free sleet wheat food
- add some wheezewort cooling
- start a hatch farm

New in the space industry upgrade:
You can no longer make pipes or tiles out of abyssalite. If you want to insulate things early game you'll probably want to use insulated sandstone, igneous rock and mid game ceramic until you unlock the new insulator material. The new material uses abyssalite and isoresin to form "insulation". Isoresin likely comes from space so is a late game thing.
Rockets give off crazy heat so you probably want to build them in space.

    You know, everytime I see someone call those tidy, planned bases "beginner bases" I think they would probably weep if they saw the mess my base is where I just crammed everything where it barely fits. I like the more organic look of my base, but it leads to problems with electric cabling now, which has the charme of a an old russian aircraft carrier which broke down and was modernized by indian minimum wage workers with faulty english translations of the manuals used for the cabelage. Which means they just put the electric cables wherever and fixed them with ducttape and called it a day. It´s glorious and it will go down in flames one day.

    I enjoyed this a lot and I'm very glad to see you're doing this. I hope it becomes a series! I watched it last night and I was thinking about it; people can really learn a lot from this type of video. I have a bit of a suggestion: create a format for these vids to help focus them and set them apart from a regular let's play - I would suggest you describe the three main problems the base owner things you need to solve, then maybe list the three main problems YOU see (which may or may not be contributing to those original problems), and then outline three goals for the video, and set to work. Make the goals specific; instead of "better oxygen" or "a good supply of food" make it "average of XXg/m2 in the base" or "at least YY kcal of food". That way you can feel more focused and know when to end the video. There may be other things you achieve in the process, like improving pathing, reorganizing priorities, etc, but at least you'll know when you've done the big thing. Maybe list the goals in your description? I'll still continue to watch, even if you don't change the format at all. Looking forward to the next one!

    I'm trying to make them a bit more structured as you'll see in #2. #1 was more of a pilot episode to see if people would enjoy it. I have fun doing the episode! For #2 I copied the exact problems from Mark in the description and tried to solve all but 1.

    Just an FYI... you dont need to use carbon skimmers in the current version of the game. Just dig down to oil and let the CO2 settle down to the slicksters. They will convert to oil or petroleum depending on the slicksters and consume it faster then you can generate it. It works to about 1 slickster per 5 dupes (that is taking in account power production co2 also).

  • @GrindThisGame

    @GrindThisGame

    5 жыл бұрын

    I do know this :) Carbon skimmers are a nice source of polluted water though which can be used as coolant and sieved to 40C water. Both have their uses for sure. As you see in part 2 of this series I do exactly what you're saying and send the CO2 down to the oil biome.

    One of my early 'good-ish' bases was one I don't think could have been saved: Relied on algae too long, base filled up with CO2, couldn't get the dupes to work on water splitting fast enough because they were gasping too hard. Kinda sucked, but oh-well, I learned from it. xD

    One way I've found to save on resources when building ladders is that you don't have to build them all the way to the ground. If there's one tile of space between the ground and the ladder, the dupes can still make it on and off the ladder just fine.

    i dunno, but i could use help too.. I'm playing this game a week and was bored of the first asteroid by trying it the second time. It seemed that a stable self-sustaining system would be easy to make and no challenge whatsoever. That's why i started the hardest asteroids with the hardest settings possible and keep learning that way, but i can't make it and it's terrible to admit that. The first time, i was surviving barely 60 Cycles by struggling for at least 48 of them until everything slipped through my fingers, horrible feeling! Heat strokes, low pressure, no water, no food, no progress. Fun fact, i even tried to burn through the dupes on another asteroid, coz they potentially have to live until the next one is ready.. It was interesting to see, that 100% stress actually means, you have about 2min left, like the full bladder. Destructive people don't seem to seek machines and won't hurt themselves in the process. Binge eaters aren't that easy to burn that way, but they will eat about 15k if possible, and if you lock them somewhere quickly enough, it would be a free stress-reduction down to 60% after a while. Otherwise, their food value maxes out at 4k and they probably use the toilets afterwards. I'm thinking of a hidden value somewhere. And i'm thinking of an emergency room with about 4k worth of food, mesh tiles, etc. Vomiter are the other way around, they will die, if starting to vomit at around 1.1k, but they also seem to be a reliable source of polluted water, if you want to convert mealwood/dirt into water. Stress symptoms like "expressing themselves" become more frequent the higher one's stress level rises and that'll be a reason to die too, because you can't interrupt them manually these times, similar to the "involuntary" stress reactions. Yeah, but i was sorry for them somehow and felt like i was playing it the wrong way.. Oh and you have lost game even if your pod would be able to print a dupe even with the no sweat option

    Other things i started to hate about my dupes btw.. - Sometimes they can't decide to do just one thing at a time instead they're running back and forth like 90% of thei time. - Sometimes, if priorities are too high, they deny food entirely, even if no yellow alert is available and they are close to a viable food source. They run around and starve to death next to the food items and start working again if dropping below 250.. - everything will be dropped on ladders, falling miles away. - they can't hop a ladder down, if they managed to stand two tiles above the ground that way.. - if too hungry and stressed they tend interrupt themselves while eating, dropping the food, then asking for food and running around like idiots.. - same goes for the toilets. They can asking for such places and miss that even if you force them to go. They keep running like idiots and peeing everywhere.

    25:54 i think the (hot) steam vent is meant to be used more as a source of power with steam turbines than as a source of water. the steam comes out hot enough where you can probably pipe it some distance before it condenses into water in the pipe, or you could put steam turbines in the same room with gas pumps cycling the steam back to the bottom.

    I'm curious about how decor really works in this game. I see a lot of people make big and beautiful bedrooms with max decor, sometimes with showers or/and toilets included in the room. On my last playthrough I kept a part of the natural decor and plants, transformed it into a "natural reserve corridor" and simply made barracks packed with cots on the side so my dupes have to pâss through the natural reserve every morning and night. So the combo natural reserve + barracks gets me 7 morale points (bedrooms give only 2), plus the natural reserve has max decor, but not the barracks, only supposed to keep the most dupes in one little room. My questions are : why isn't everybody doing it ? Is there a flaw I'm not aware of ? Is decor in bedrooms so important ? Do I NEED comfy beds ?

  • @GrindThisGame

    @GrindThisGame

    5 жыл бұрын

    Decor itself can give morale + morale for room bonuses as you've discovered. Comfy beds upgrade the room morale bonus to +2 vs. +1 and they don't need to sleep as long to regain stamina.

    :D and the coal gen. I would urge him to set up atmo suits first and foremost so he can get his steam geyser water set up and then get the dupes into more cold biome and use the nullifier. That way he can finally get into electrolyzers, natural gas, cooling loops, and eventual oil and plastics! These early-mid bases are always a struggle. My big disasters always happened cycle 50-80 from starvation. I'm assuming that's why this base looks so bad. He probably already saved it from starvation, which explains the mush bars, bristle blossoms, and O2 crisis.

    Greggles, you're forgetting that slush geyser. Which now that I'm thinking about it was the source of that "where's the slime lung coming from" question partway through the video. It was in a slime biome. But anyway, the slush geyser is a positively amazing way to cool a base, especially if you use some thermo sensors to control the cooling loops. You could also use the output from the water sieve to heat up the pincha peppers.

    Aaaall the minor nitpicks in your playstyle: (don't take this too seriously, I'm playing Dude fix my Wintermute ;) - That power wire is very unlikely to overload as long as there's no research going on and the dupes aren't stressed (most of the machines making the power draw so high on that wire are rarely used) - Uprooting multiple plants can be done way more quickly with the dig command (even in farmplots) - Considering there's a slush geyser right on top of the base you shouldn't worry about water but rather build a pump and a sieve to get that into the water tank right away - Showers don't actually use up water, they put out as much pWater as they consume clean water, so if it's in a closed loop they don't remove or add any water.

  • @GrindThisGame

    @GrindThisGame

    I will nitpick your nitpicks I dont want the chance of an overload ever because why waste time and materials fixing it. I didnt want to dig the tile under the plant and know the tile method is faster. Converting that wonderful cold polluted water to 40c clean water is a waste....I would rather cool stuff with it first and then turn it to 40c water. The shower thing was to save time and to allow the system to refill after the water drained to the pincha peppernuts.
