I love this episode mostly for the character twist of Gyro. One of the things I've noticed, intentional or not, is Boyd could be a stand-in for children caught between adversarial parents, or those in child services. A neglected child for one reason or another, and Huey is the only one letting him be a kid instead an object of interest.

With everything in the episode to gush about, the thing I enjoyed the most, other than Lupin in the crowd, was the depth they were finally giving Gyro. I really liked how this version of the character was much less optimistic and now embittered, and there were nods to not getting any respect leading to that in the first season. Seeing that he was a hopeful, optimistic, bright young inventor that had one major disaster of an event and the complete disillusionment of his mentor kill that for him really fleshed the character's constant lashing out at others and self arrogance. If anything, it adds another unspoken level to his relationships with the others. In other words... THAT is why he acts like an abusive jerk to Fenton. He HATES seeing his former self in his young intern. And you can silently tell he's choking on his own bitterness. He DOES want Fenton to succeed. He DOES want Fenton to become a great scientist. He just DOESN'T want to see this bright, energetic go-getter's dreams get crushed and turn into an insufferable husk. He's been there, he's afraid it will happen again, and he clearly doesn't want to see his backstory repeat on someone else.

That was one of my favorite parts of the episode we saw in in The dangerous chemistry of Gandra Dee that Gyro gave Fenton an approving nod at the end when he saw what Fenton was working on. The Ducktales crew said that Gyro saw a lot of his old self in Fenton and he both liked and hated that. I think Gyro always liked Fenton and that's why he was always so hard on him because like you said he didn't want history to repeat itself. With Gyro giving Fenton a full time job I think Gyro realized there was a better way to help Fenton succeed as a scientist.

Scrooge is an adventurer, and as such, has a greater perspective than anyone in an accounting position. Never mind the fact they turn out to be villains, they put a leash on Scrooge's spending, especially after throwing all that money to anyone and anything to save Della. While a lot of Gyro's inventions go haywire, Scrooge still sees something special and knows that a successful, innovative product is mutually beneficial. Gyro becomes a revolutionary scientist, Scrooge gets a cut of the profits off of those inventions. In this series, Gyro seems to be more of a direct employee to Scrooge, where as previous versions he's a freelance inventor that Scrooge sometimes employs.

One of my favorite moments in the episode is when Huey and Boyd are touring around the city. Boyd takes a moment to look at the cherry blossoms, happily telling Huey how much fun he’s having as the petals swirl around him. For those who don’t know, cherry blossoms in flower language symbolize change and appreciating the temporary beauty that life gives us (thank Heartcatch Pretty Cure for teaching me that). So their significance in the scene likely represents how Boyd is starting to feel more human and slowly letting go of his past.

Funny enough, Astro Boy actually took inspiration from classic Disney, and it's also worth noting that Walt Disney himself was quite fond of Astro Boy, and allegedly wanted to make an adaptation of it. One of my favorite parts of the episode was a callback to the first "little bulb going berserk" episode, Gyro repeats his "You're not evil, you're good" speech to calm down an invention of his that's rampaging. Perhaps in universe he always in the back of his mind believed Boyd was fundamentally good and that lead to the belief for the Little Bulb line, perhaps the experience with Bulb informed his later interactions, but it seems to be a pretty big component of the character

There's an interesting video from Overly Sarcastic Productions about how robots are represented in pop culture and how they're coded very similar to neurodivergent/asexual people. So by having Huey be mocked for being like a robot, making friends with an actual robot, and reaffirming that the robot is a real person, it turns the usual narrative around. Instead of "this character is less human because they don't understand humour/lack social graces/have weird needs or hangups, etc.", they're saying "beings who have these weird qualities are still people." I do not know anything about DuckTales. I watched this episode because of my love for Astro Boy. There are several references in this episode that I really liked, but the one that struck me the most was the hug scene at the end. That was clearly a reference to the climatic showdown in the 2003 Astro Boy anime in the final episode. The way it is presented and the hug itself is a clear nod to the hug Atom and Tenma have at the end. That scene was so potent, I lost it when I saw it referenced.

I have a theory about what might be Huey’s character arc. If the first season was followed by Dewey’s character arc, and how he’s trying to figure out Della’s disappearance mystery, plus Dewey also had to learn to trust his own family members, especially to Scrooge. And at the same time, he also had to learn the fact that, in every case, he is not the center of all attention and honor. Louie’s arc was more about how he achieved his dreams and how he utilized his own special abilities. Huey’s character arc is about self-confidence. Already the first episode of the third season kind of hints at this biggest problem and how Huey trusts way too much to the guidebook, instead of relying on his own brain. We’ve seen that, Huey knows how to use his head, and he hasn’t always had to use a guidebook in every situation to find the answer to his problems. So Huey’s problem isn’t that, he wouldn’t be smart, but that, he doesn’t trust himself and what he himself is capable of. And I think this episode and the next episode will tackle this problem pretty clearly.

From what I understand Dr. Tenma's relationship with Astro/Atom varies on the incarnation. While the two never fully reconcile, Tenma did play a minor supporting role in the manga. My exposure to Astro in animation is the 1980 and 2003 series. Tenma didn't even appear after the first episode in the former, and became an antagonist in the latter. Dr. Akita even mirrors Tenma'a 2003 incarnation as Tenma was trying to push Astro to lead a robot uprising against humanity.

I didn't think anything of it when it was just Gizmoduck and Darkwing but now we have Astroboyd, Lena, and Penumbra all taking up the roles of superheroes. Something I saw in the episode that stood out to me was the scene of Gyro reconciling with Boyd. It reminded me of almost a reverse of what occurs in the 2003 Astro Boy anime. In the series finale of that version of Astro Boy, Tenma and Astro was able to reconcile, though it was Astro who put forth the effort to forgive Tenma of what the mad doctor had done through the gesture of a hug, saving a broken Tenma, though Tenma would go to jail for his crimes. Meanwhile in DuckTales, Gyro is able to reconcile with what he thought was his own failures, including the admission that Boyd was right. And he accepted that with a hug. It's an interesting parallel to me, and I hope you all enjoy this tidbit too.

Yeah this was a pretty awesome episode. This season seems to be focusing on fleshing out characters outside of the core Duck family or introducing new (and familar) faces. While Huey seems to be the focus triplet, its mostly about fleshing out the world which I'm more than ok with. Gizmoduck was amazing in this episode, and I hope Gyro can eventually find a bit of his enthusiasm from his original self over time. Can't wait for the hour long Darkwing focused episode "Let's Get Dangerous!" My hopes are that we can eventually get a full Darkwing show to spin out of it because while he works in the DT universe, the world of the terror that flaps in the night deserves a chance to stretch its wings once more with the same passion they put into this show.

I love this episode. Boyd is great, Fenton's always fun, and it's great to see more of Huey where he's being so nice and defending his friend. So much better than how neurotic and mean he was in the opener. I'm not overly fond of this version of Gyro. But this episode does help to flesh him out and soften him a bit by the end, which is nice.

There’s one other aspect to DuckTales making an homage to Astro boy. It’s basically taking everything full Circle. Astro boy is the first manga ever created and it was inspired by ducktails comic books. The very origin of manga and anime as a whole was inspired by DuckTales comics so it’s really neat when you think about that but this episode paid homage to so many classic manga and anime. And while it may not have been in the manga the first anime of astro boy actually did have him reconciling with his father and actually has a point in which afterwards he’s so happy he does a victory lap around the planet.

    * see’s thumbnail * You have half the video to rephrase that. Edit: Yeah I feel you could have phrased it much better since the original astro boy was more of a hero and villain origin story. Similar to how an American backstory for Sonic and Eggman paints Robotnik as a tradgic friend turn madman.

"Astro B.O.Y.D" (Season 3, Episode 6) was the DuckTales (2017) tribute to Tezuka I've been waiting for. The main reason why is because Osamu Tezuka (the creator of "Astro Boy" and "BlackJack") was inspired by Carl Barks (Disney Duck artist/writer and the man to create the "Duckverse") himself to create his signature art style and storytelling dynamic. This gave us the creation of the style we associate with Japanese "anime/manga" (along with the slang of it as well) during the 1960s. So because of Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge, we have anime and manga along with the otaku community as a whole. I'm really surprised that wasn't mentioned as much in the video especially considering the friendship that both creators had for each other. Plus, Barks and Disney did have a big influence over the anime community as a whole from its very cultural conception.

Want to know another story that borrowed Astro Boy's back story? The movie A.I. also has a boy robot that was created to take the place of a deceased son. That movie was original a project of Stanley Kubrick who was a close friend of Osmau Tezuka. Also Gyro's former mentor who wanted to weaponize 2bo has another parallel with a Tezuka story. After the original Astro Boy anime series was finished in 1963-65, Tezuka wanted to create a new version, but had lost the rights to some of the characters when his anime studio went out of business. He created a similar story, called Jeter Mars. Mars was similar to Astro, but had two 'fathers' One of them wanted to create a kind, robot boy, the other wanted to create a weapon. Similar idea to the duck tales back story.

So like... I am no expert... but from what I recall from astroboy the original the doctor who created astro boy filled him with weapons for protection but abandoned him and then the doctors assistant found astro and adopted him as a child. And somthing I like is that Gyros redesign resembles doctor Tenma with Akita resembling Dr Ochanomizu to an extent. Leading to a sort of role reversal for the ending with the astroboy returning after the father realised the error of his ways

There is a version of Astro boy that does end up reconciling with Dr. Tenma. At the end of the 2003 Astro boy anime series, Dr. Tenma is convinced that no matter what he does his son will never love or agree with him. He attempts to end his own life in a lab explosion but Astro stops him and the show ends after they make up. I agree to disagree. I'll give Mark some credit for collaborating with Gandra and hacking into the lab that one episode in season 2, but I think Gyro having made Boyd makes little more sense (just my opinion, though). Gyro's inventions are always buggy, and Boyd glitching out at that party Doofus Drake had the previous seasons kind of reminds me of bulb, plus it gave Gyro some much needed depth as opposed to being “just some jerk who works for Scrooge McDuck”

The least the could have done is give him a past design to justify the difference.

Tenma fluctuates a lot depending on the source material. In some versions of the story he is the actual main antagonist while in other versions he's a minor antagonist who occasionally seems remorseful but usually cycles back into his role as a bad guy. There are 2 versions of him that could be described as truly good. One of the most tragic versions of the story involves Astro being tricked into thinking Tenma has disowned him after Tenma says some admittedly harsh things to him after he screws up a fancy dinner. It's pretty clear that Tenma was just angry and didn't actually mean to disown astro boy in this version but Tobio is kidnapped before they can actually meet again and Tenma doesn't show up in that series again. I think the animated film from a decade ago is the only version where the 2 actually get a happy ending and become a legitimate family.
