I rode a demo in the spring after eagerly awaiting it to come to the US for months. Getting off, the dealer came to me to ask what I thought, and my description was "it's a magic carpet!" It's the best motorcycle I've ever ridden, better than the Super Duke for sure. It's also a $22000 toy, which is why I haven't bought it yet. I could buy it but I feel like I should get a house first, and man is that a chunk of change.

I had the 1000DS and rode all over Europe on it. Sold it and bought a Tiger 800XC and now have a KTM 1190R. However, this new DVT is really pulling me back to Ducati. I will definitely be looking to change out in the spring of 2016.Great review!

Another good review and you pretty much summed up what my thoughts were on this incredible bike when I tested it last May. My only reservation is that I did find the seat a little too low for me (I'm 6'4"). This was fine for motorway riding but when out on the country lanes I tended to slide a little on the seat and as a result found my legs in a more sport riding angle than an armchair style of which I found a little uncomfortable. That said, its still a fantastic bike but you have to try the Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro. I tested it and it just nailed everything that I want in a bike. As you say, there is just something about owning a Ducati that makes you smile a lot.

Hi Mark. Just finished watching your great review of the Triumph Tiger 800 XRX. and was pretty much sold on it because it has so much for the money. My other love was this Ducati Multistrada S. Now I'm not sure which to pick. I am planning to trade in my Monster 1100 20th anniversary edition for one of these bikes. Thanks again Mark.

Great review, its always good to see reviews from "ordinary" riders. I just bought a 15 plate Multi DVT. I had looked at earlier bikes, but after sitting on this one..it just felt right. As you said, it feels lighter and that narrower/lower seat is much more user friendly (I am 5'8" too). Off to Europe soon, it just has to be better than my ZRX..that was OK, but the Multi is in a different league. :)

Hi I too had a 2010 MTS until last year. Test rode the 2016 MTS this week against BMW1000XR, GS1200 and KTM 1190 Adventure. MTS was WAY ahead of the competition. Build and design quality unrivalled, and bags more character for a similar price if not a small premium. Still undecided on a used older model (ie post 2010) or the new one, as I didn't think there was a massive difference in the engine performance and rideability...

Just had to add that this is the best bike I've ever ridden. Recently I've test ridden lots of bikes: ZZR1400, Ducati Diavel, Moto Guzzi Cali 1400, Aprilia Caponord 1200, Goldwing 1800, Husqvarna Nuda 900R, BMW GS Adventure W/C, BMW GT1600/6, Triumph Explorer 1200, Ducati Multistrada 1200 GT 2014. And my current bikes are VFR800FI W (1998), CCM R30 Supermoto 644 Suzuki engine (2002) and Honda ST1300 (2002). Take the best bits from any of these bikes and the new Ducati MS has them. It's more comfy than the BMW GS, feels as light as my CCM, as gorgeous to look at as the Diavel, nearly as fast accelerating as the ZZR (but who's counting) much smoother than the Caponord, easy to ride like the Triumph but easy to mount and the cruise control is on the proper side. It's not a handful like the BMW GT or the Goldwing or my Pan that took 2 years to get used to, yet I feel it will be just as comfortable. The BMW GS seat was awful btw and I would have needed the touratech replacement from day 1, It's light and easy to chuck around like the Husky Nuda. The only thing better on the other bikes was the smooth airflow of the ZZR 1400 fairing, but then that does stick out about 4 feet. I would have liked a bigger tank, but happy to stop more at petrol stations because this bike will ride all day and I don't want DVT to mean Deep Vein Thrombosis. I rode all those other bikes with cash to buy but after 4 years of wondering what would be better in all respects than my VFR, this new Ducati is the one. No hesitation.

+Max Headvroom Max, unfortunately I live in the worst place for biking, London. My ducati is now the highest mileage of those sold by my dealer. I've become their guinea pig. It has nearly 8,000 miles on it. About 7,000 of those were done over in Europe; 3 trips to Italy and back. After my first trip I realised my arse isn't sufficiently padded for the saddle on long trips, so I had it reupholstered with extra memory foam for £45 and then the ultimate test; on my 2nd trip I rode back from south of the Matterhorn (Valtourneche in Valle D'Aosta, Italy. 14 hours riding in one day. No aches or pains. I could have ridden the bike the next day. It's had a sidestand recall, and recalled fuel gauge sender and some software updates. No worse than other new models. My dealer says that it's quite normal for owners to move from BMW GS to the Multistrada. That must be when they realise going around the world isn't realistically gonna happen. 'I tried my MTS on an unmade road, basically a rocky track. It managed fine but I was worried about dropping it. The standard tyres aren't up to much on slippery surfaces like tram tracks in the rain, so as my rear tyre is now shot, I'll switch to PR4s which will be great for 99% of my riding

+Max Headvroom Have you considered the new Enduro version out this year? If you're coming from a GS, you my prefer that model. Main difference is the GS size and style wheels and the 30l tank. Mind you, I'm getting 200 miles to a tank with some to spare. It depends if you want to retain your off road possibilities. The Enduro model is available in red if you don't like the GS style colours all the pictures have.

I've ridden sports bikes off road, my CBR954 and also a GSXR750 with Renthals on...down some byways in Cumbria, (recommend to take a friend who is also mad to help lift bike over some rough bits tho,) lol so sure th MTS be fine for a few gravely tracks and shitty Devon back lanes/roads ;-)

Hi Mark! Great review, it helped me a lot along with my own test rides (I was deciding between this one and the BMW XR). I finally bought my Ducati 3 weeks ago, and I'm loving it so far. One question: did you notice that it makes a lot of valve noise? Mine seems to make plenty, especially now after the break-in period. But it can all be something in my head :-) Anyway, it's more noticeable when the bike is idle. Just trying to figure out if it's normal.

I've waited since I first heard about it in Sept 2014. I went to Milan EICMA to see it early as I couldn't wait until the NEC show. The demo at my dealer (which is 2 minutes walk away) was 2 weeks late arriving, but well worth the wait. Mine arrives at the end of June (maybe a week or two late) and I can't wait to kit it out and ride it to Italy. Everything you said about it matches my sentiments. I could make it pull away on the clutch at idle speed the engine is that smooth. It's as smooth as the new BMW GS that I nearly bought, but so much prettier and faster, more fun and better equipped. I want all the electronic stuff as my VFR800 doesn't even have ABS and I feel like treating myself. Can't wait until end of June. The engine sounds so amazing too. Termignoni not needed. I rode the previous MS GT version and this is so much nicer to ride at slow to medium speeds.

Don't get me wrong the Harley is well built and never let me down but, when their is a Multistrada sitting next to it it`s hard to get on the Harley. Some day when I want to be loud and go slow I will ride it again but not right now. Good review.

Hi Mark. Good informative reviews on latest BMW S1000XR and Ducati MS DVT. 2 issues btwn the 2 bikes: 1. Steering lightness. which one is more chukable at corners or manuevering btwn traffics in towns? I like the lightness of BMW700GS but a bit under power. 2. Pillion comfort. which one is better especially for touring for hours and available after market to upgrade for longer rides.

***** Hi shah ,I found both bikes had pin point handling and steering ,both had the semi-active suspension,so pretty much similar in that respect..with regards to pillion comfort sorry cant comment..but they should be ok for pillions ,the multistrada seat looked abit more padded than the xr,but both bikes will eventually have loads of aftermarket upgrades for longer rides ..just need to decide what one you like the best ..vtwin or inline four ,they are both amazing machines ..all the best mark.

After the warranty nightmare with my 2011 machine nothing and I mean nothing could every persuade me to buy a Ducati again. Guess you must have been very lucky with your 2010 bike. It was probably one of the nicest bikes I've ever ridden when it worked. My advice to anyone thinking of buying the new model is wait at least a year for everyone else to highlight any reliability issues.

I purchased the 2015 multi just over a month ago. The only problem I've had is the riders seat. The staples used to hold the seat cover on are short and all the staples have pulled out of the thin plastic flange at the rear of the seat. The sides and the front by the fuel tank are holding just fine. Waiting to hear back from the dealer and see what Ducati says.

The beautiful thing about the Multistrada is that they did not change that much over the years regarding design. Older models do not look outdated and their components are high quality and durable. The only thing that makes me look at 2015+ models is the rear brake. I got to ride a 2011 model and the rear brake just did not exist. Nevertheless the Multistrada really got me!

very informative Mark enjoyed it I only have had Ducati's for the same reason you mentioned. I may like you search out a 2010 model for the time being although being 5'8" as you are the new models lower seat is appealing. But there is a decent used saving to be had. then when the 2015 is a couple of years old well who knows. But then you will be on a 2017 model telling us just how much better it is than the 2015. Will it ever end :)

Really enjoyed your reviews of the Ducati Multistrada DVT, BMW S1000 XR, and the KTM Super Adventure. Which bike to buy would be a difficult decision to make. Personally I would choose the KTM, but that's because I have already had the orange cool-aid. Strange question for you, what mic do you use with your Go Pro? +Tony Tng You set a pin number that will start the bike if you lose the key. I put mine in a zipped pocket. If you drop it whilst riding, or leave it with an MOT tester as I did, the bike will carry on until you try to restart it. Then the PIN comes in handy. It's activated via a push button. I've not tried it yet.

Enjoyed your review. Was hoping you would open the bike up and over take some cars :) I currently own a Buell XB12, GSA 1200, K1300R. Nice sat in the garage, nice to have riding choices according to mood but a pain when you have to keep paying the bills, insurance and tax and cleaning them. I rode a KTM 1290 and did a youtube review. That bike was nuts and I really wanted one but could not afford to change. Ducati strikes me to be similar to the KTM in grunt and performance. What do you think? However it will take a lot for me to change my bikes back to chain drive.
