This is such a good presentation! Duane said he was trying to emulate the harp in a guitar magazine interview and I read it once so it is slightly more than just player lore. To me a fascinating element of Duane to consider is how much natural talent had. He started playing guitar at 15. He died at 23. He began playing slide at about 20. In 3 years he developed what we hear on his records. Mind blowing! Greg started playing first and had about a 2 year head start. He is quoted in one of his books as saying Duane dropped out of high school to stay at home and play guitar all day and he then "passed me as if I was standing still". Practice is the ingredient we all have available to us but natural talent is unique, mysterious and enviable.

Using the slide on the third finger in open E makes it possible to play minor chords very easy using the middle finger to lower the 3rd behind the slide and using the slide to fret the root on the low E. Putting it on my pinky makes my fingers useless.

I know the focus will be on alternating thumb, but at some point during the session could you touch on what your approach would be with a steady bass? Don’t want to divert from the focus on alternating, just get a little proverbial food for thought.
