DTM's Forgotten "Race Of Champions"

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Race Of Champions organisers are the only racing group that can successfully pull off..... well, the Race Of Champions. However, one of Germany's premier racing categories decided to create a "Race Of Champions" style event of it's own. Would it work though?

FUN FACT: Here in Argentina, an old series called Super TC 2000 copied this format one time in 2013 in the Estadio Unico de La Plata. It was the 10 round of the 12 races championship. It gave points and it was done just once because it wasn't really attractive for the audience on TV, being Argentina really into motorsports.

Really glad you had a look at this. I was there in 2011. It was my first real life racing event. It was amazing for audience there. All kinds of show runs and being very close to all the drivers and teams. In the end its unfortunately the wrong era to expect fully sold out stadium for a racing series with the management of the series playing its cards ever so wrong.

People rag on NASCAR for their "gimmicky" stuff, especially in the late 2000's and early 2010's, and apparently DTM looked at that and said "hold my beer." I could not imagine this becoming a points paying round. On another note, do you have an example of a gimmicky race format you'd be interested in seeing?

On the topic of DTM, I think a good subject for your “awful manufacture program?” series would be the R-Motorsport run Aston Martin DTM program in 2019. They had glimmers of potential that sadly never really stuck despite having some pretty well proven drivers in their line up like Paul Di Resta, Daniel Juncadella and Jake Dennis.

I was there in 2012! Don’t have too many memories because I was quite young, but I remember the great visibility of the whole layout and the awesome mood in the stadium. A few things to note: - BMW had already announced their DTM entry back in fall 2010, so this event was not an attempt to persuade them to enter. - The fact that it’s very similar to the Race of Champions cannot be a reason for its demise because literally nobody knows or cares about ROC in Germany. There’s zero media coverage of the events to this day.

The racing was amazing and the series had massive potential, unfortunately it got screwed over by external politics (SCCA didn't like them) and the asian market crash induced recession of 1997.

I think they used to have the pit crews race to determine qualifying order for the all-star race, or something like that. It was the only "race" on a wednesday, and this is when I would watch belt sander drag racing on Speed TV.

I mean the side-by-side knockout format is _basically_ the format that monster trucks have used since actually racing monster trucks was a thing, just with tarmac racing cars. What DTM did kind of has similarities to the Anaheim style course. Oddly enough ROC style crossover courses don't work that well for the big trucks inside stadiums because they need more room than a stadium can offer for the crossover. Taller truck, taller crossover (jump). go figure. Crossover style courses tend to happen at speedways where there's more room. NASCAR took a different path to stadium racing recently with putting the pre-Daytona Clash inside the LA Coliseum, basically turning a large venue into a small short-track, and for _now_ it seems to be working well. The old Mickey Thompson series also ran exclusively in stadiums on dirt short-course circuits with small off-road trucks and buggies, running moderately large fields all at once, and it ran quite some time, through the '80s and into the early '90s before Thompson's death and less interest from manufacturers resulted in the series being bought out and slowly fading away. The Super Stadium trucks you see at Indy races now are basically meant to be used in stadiums as a revival of the MTEG series, but were thrown out onto the streets (literally) by...and we're coming full circle here...Monster Jam's owner.

Although you say another series doesn't do this, the WRC does do this with the SuperSpecial's on select events. Perosnally, I'm not really a fan at all, both in sims and in real life. I went to one in Wales once, and, although it was cool to see rally cars and I'm grateful I got to see them before it was unceremoniously dumped, it wasn't really that special. The only one I really don't mind is the one in Kenya, called Kasarani.

Oof, late 00's, early 10's DTM deserves plenty of videos on their own. Unbearable politics by the manufacturers, including very blatant team orders. Stupid rules, like those two mandatory pitstops, or drivers getting blue flags, when a driver ran behind them, that had more pitstops than they had. The racing was also soooo boring. The cars had too much downforce, which didn't allow the cars to run close to each other. There were so many issues with DTM that ultimately caught up with them by the time covid hit and the remaining manufacturers left. On the other hand, I kinda miss that era of DTM. Germany's biggest manufacturers, duking it out in spectacular race cars, wheel to wheel in sprint races, with big name drivers, but also pushing talent and creating new stars. Maybe the move to electric cars will push manufacturers to build spectacular, electric race cars for sprint events. And no, Formula E doesn't count.
