Couple suggestions to make it better for people who wanna try this: -Don't just eyeball the center of the cap. If the hole isn't in the center your image will be distorted. Close to the center is fine, but getting it just right is worth the effort. -Make sure your hole is as close to a perfect circle as possible. A perfectly circular hole gives you the sharpest results. -Use a sharpie to paint the area around the hole black to avoid flares. -Use a smal strip from a tincan instead of foil. That is much more sturdy so getting a perfect hole will be easier. Just sand it down a little to make it nice and smooth. -Make sure everything is clean before you put it on the camera. Every bit of dirt or dust that's on the cap might otherwise end up on your sensor!

@@prj2266 There's no way to get it accurately. Just buy from a real photo store instead. They laser cut the pinhole precisely to the exact diameter needed for the flange distance of your brand of camera so the images come out sharp. Costs only $10.

Great video but i have one suggestion to make for the actual hole. Instead of using aluminium foil, use a piece of a soda can which is much sturdier. Use a strong needle and a light hammer or another heavy object to make a bump in the aluminium, not a hole but just a bump. Then flip it over and use sanding paper to sand the bump away until you get a hole. Fine sanding paper is recommended as it wil give you a really clean, round and thin edge and you have much more control over how small or big you wanna make the hole. This wil improve the sharpness of your picture greatly in comparison with the aluminium foil method with just a hole punched into.

The purpose of making a pinhole camera is to better understand the workings of light and your camera; it is often one of the first things many photography classes have you do for this very reason. The pictures aren't exactly pretty, though in some cases they can be interesting (of course that is a matter of personal taste,) but because of the very slow shutter speeds required and the inability to use the view finder, it forces you to think more about your shots. The basic idea of using a pinhole camera, is not for you to use it all the time, but something that is used to get people to be more considered when they shoot photos instead of just taking tonnes of photos and hoping a few come out good.

It's not about being cutting edge and new. It's about going back to the basics of photography and breaking free of bad habits. It helps to remind you of the most fundamental processes in photography. It's good to experiment with. Every Pro photographer has experimented with this, because it's a history lesson and a personal experience that helps you go back to basics with your camera, by toying with those numbers on your lcd manually.

@littlestworkshop We tried making the pinhole as small as possible while still letting enough light in for the 30fps pinhole video, which has a 1/30th of a second shutter speed.

@littlestworkshop We were just playing around with combining different techniques (such as HDR and time-lapse) with pinhole photography and also wanted to satisfy our curiosity about how pinhole video would look. It's just for the fun of it! Or maybe there's someone out there that wants to achieve this look for artistic purposes! :-)

With out pinhole photography we wouldn't have the digital photography we have today this is how it all started. I teach photography and its one of the techniques I use to teach exposure to my students. The good thing with this diigital technique is you get an instant image where as with light sensitive paper and darkroom developing you get a negative image which you then have to invert to a positive image. Whilst the image quality isnt great its great way to experiment and learn about exposure

pinhole cameras was how photos were taken long before lenses had come about. It lets someone understand more of how a camera/photography is really working. This was a very quick easy cool method, however you can get results that are professional looking with playing around a lot and buying certain things. Its an art of its own.

I’ve always been a big fan of pinhole photography and over the years have used various pinhole cameras ranging from a home made 5X4 to a pinhole on a Russian Zorki. I managed to make some very good quality pinholes and was able to measure the pinholes quite accurately. I bought a powerful magnifying loupe with a measuring scale on it which was in increments of millimetres and each millimetre was divided in five parts, in other words I could fairly accurately measure pinholes down to 1/5 of a millimetre. Using a reciprocity failure chart, I managed to produce some pretty good results but I found that it was very difficult to get good pictures with a 35mm camera as the negative is too small. In my opinion, 120 medium format film is about the smallest that I would recommend and I have seen excellent results from 120, 4X5 and 8X10.

Thanks for making the video, it was very interesting. I grabbed a spare body cap and just used a sharp wood screw to make the hole as I didn't have a drill handy. First hole was a bit big so I just taped it over with black tape and tried again, by the third attempt I was actually getting reasonably sharp shots and a cool vignette. I used some tinfoil and a drawing pin to make the pinhole.

If you made a pinhole. in the body-cap, the incoming light would be from only directly in front of the tiny hole. This would result in only a pinpoint of light hitting the camera sensor. Using a very thin foil, light is allowed to hit the whole of the sensor.

Yeah, the camera on a tripod should hold the cap steady enough to drill the hole. Just remember, this plastic is dense, so you might need to push down pretty hard while drilling. Also, to get the best hole (especially since you're drilling with the cap on the camera...not the sturdiest thing, but sturdy enough) you should use the fastest drill you have. Good luck, and have fun!

i dont personaly like the photos he used as example, although it could be argued that they lean toward a more fine art type of photography. i have seen however absolutely stunning photos done with pinhole cameras(most of them film, the iso with digital is weird and can produce lots of grain and artifacts) and this is because with no lens theres theoretically an infinite focus letting both the foreground and the background be always in focus. its an effect you really cant replicate any other way and you have to see to really understand and really does look great, just the examples shown here dont represent it well

Well you see.. back when we dont have technology.. Camera is big as fuck. When pinhole cameras were introduced, its was groundbreaking. And it created unique effects out of it. Till to this day, people still do pinhole photography. Its a fun way to shoot. And *ITS MAKE YOU THINK MORE ABOUT THE SHOT*. You probably have an L Lens. Or Nikkor lens. Its just creating the effects and to think. And you say "camera that can do more"? Yeah.. try to take pictures when theres no lens(which is probably 20$-1000$)

Pinhole cameras are used in archival photography of architecture because pinhole photos have zero optical distortion. The aperture is very small and there is no glass, so the image of a building is faithful to reality. A normal SLR/DSLR photo image of a tall building distorts the geometry which drives architects nuts.

there's a diffraction limit to the sharpness of the image that one can achieve, i.e. at a certain point the reduction of the hole only makes the image worse. Basically, it's when the diameter is below the size of the 1st Fresnel zone, which is about 0,3 mm (for green light). To make a good round hole of this size is not very easy though (once I spent like half a day to make a good hole). I would also recommend to use copper foil instead of aluminium, the hole edges will be much smoother.
