    I'm a new rider and I don't even have my licence yet so I can't comment about the DRZ400S on the road. Where I live in Spain there are a million tracks all connected by sandy/hard pack dirt/gravel roads that the farmers use to get to their olive/almond trees and vineyards. I had zero experience on motorbikes before, and I mean zero. When the bike arrived (i'm the sixth owner) it looked huge and very intimidating. 26,000km on the clock. It starts first time, every time. It's from 2005 and is a little rough around the edges as you can imagine, many a scratch and dent but the bike doesn't seem to notice. It has a long history of oil changes and has never failed an MOT, the only problem it has on record was the rear tire was a bit bald in 2010, haha. Like I say, I don't have any experience on any other bike, but it hasn't proved necessary. To start with, the torque in first gear was a little scary, it felt like the bike wanted to rip itself out of my hands and go on an adventure on its own, but that was only because of my virgin nerves. Now I'm used to it, she's a sweetheart who has predictable power and is a LOT of fun. Twisting the throttle on a dirt track, even going up a steep gradient, she flies up it with no complaint. I'm terrible at switching gear, so a few times I've done hill climbs in second but the bike doesn't seem to care. The suspension hasn't bottomed out on me despite my terrible line choices. The carb that everyone warned me about hasn't been an issue, I just pull it out to start, push it in one to idle while it warms up, then fully in and off I go. The intimidation factor has disappeared gradually as I've become accustomed to it. The bike even looks smaller! In the end, I'm glad I chose the DRZ over the CRF300L. I made my choice because I wanted a bike I could grow into, rather than out of and during hours of research, the consensus seems to be that the CRF300L feels somewhat gutless. Again, I've never ridden one, so I can't confirm that, but I can certainly confirm the DRZ has guts and some to spare. Happy riding bros.

    Exactly my point. And we both live in Spain. The bad vibe with the DRZ carb is not the carb itself, its the cable that runs out of it and the gas return system. Both of which can be cancelled if it becomes a problem. Theres also aftermarket carbs that will improve the DRZ greatly. I have exactly the same DRZ, an S. (on my channel) I got an S because they are less beaten up and has subframe to add a suitcase. Un salu2. 🙂

    The reason people have the millage on CRFs because those 250 engines ad super under stressed. One reason the DRZ "seems" less reliable is because people keep messing with them. Outside of suspension mods no one does much modding on the CRF 250L. Most users start modding their DRZ the week they buy it then hit the forums when they mess it up. Just my opinion.

    I believe that the DR-Z400E would have been a killer bike if it had come with a 6th gear or wider 5 gearbox. I know that some have changed the standard gearing on their "E" to S/SM setup to make it more usable on the road.

  • @kymstock1852
    @kymstock18522 жыл бұрын

    For me ( experienced senior rider) the two limitations of the DRZ400E (registered in OZ) are 1) The gear ratios are too close for ADV riding ( you need to alter the sprockets to get a good touring speed of 60-70 mph) 2) The seat height is too high. Both issues are fixable by modification. You an fit a wide ratio gear set ( Nova or ACT) to get a usable first gear for slow stuff and a easy 70 mph for touring on street. The motor will pull the bigger gaps. You can lower the suspension internally to drop the seat height wile at the same time getting spring weight and valving to suit your riding style. I prefer stiffer suspension to cope with luggage weight and hitting sharp edge ruts/roots at speed. Doing these modifications would add about $2000 US to the retail price of the DRZ. If I was a beginner the Honda would be my choice.

    I have owned both bikes and I am liking the CRF300L Rally best. But I am a very mild rider at age 70. I think if you are a aggressive experienced rider you would probable want the DRZ400 E or S depending on what country you live in. E's are sold in Australia but not in the US. IMO the CRF300l Or rally would be the better bike for beginners.

    13-50 final gearing on a drz seems extremely low considering stock drz400s gearing is 15-44 and 14-47 for the drz400e. For the riding we do in the Utah mountains, deserts, and Moab, I prefer 15-44. My brother prefers 14-44. Love your videos.

    I decide to go for the wr250r myself however if I only had a choice of the DRZ the CRF and the KLX I would take the KLX because the crf-300 L has a one piece subframe and a mild steel frame. If you wrecked the subframe you totaled the bike out and on my 250l I had frame damage from a low speed crash in my foot Peg area.

    DRZ for harder more challenging terrain, more off road or fully off road. It has a better frame, suspension, brakes and of course engine. The CRF is for older or less skilled riders wanting to ride mainly just dirt roads with a lot of on road commuting. The 400e which you can still buy new in Australia is the pick of the bunch.

Its under powered on purpose for leaners permits and all the other updates unless you are a pro you will not bother much about. Theres enough drz for a while, whereas the 300 will grow slow soon. For the trail, a 30 yr old XR you can fix with a hammer and some wire. If the kick starts not your thing, drz all the way.

    I was torn between the DRZ 400 and the CRF 300L. Trying to figure out which one to buy. I am not going to be doing any extreme enduro. I am also average height at 5'9". I have rode a friends DRZ 400, another friends klx 250. So I went to a dealership that had all bike in stock. I sat on the DRZ400, the KLX300, the CRF300L, and a couple of different huskies. And the CRF300L just felt like it fit like a glove. Long story short I ordered a CRF300L and I am current just waiting for the dealership to get it in.

    @@daveh4700 I absolutely love my CRF300L. I've had it now for a little over a year. And the bike has plenty of torque and for my style of riding and the areas that I'm riding in the mountains and in Florida it is absolutely a great bike for me. I love the torque that has. I can be in 3rd cruising and it still pulls without stalling. It feels kind of like the torque of a four-wheeler. The only thing that I know I'm going to change soon are the tires. Up in the mountains the tire slip and down here in the sand the stock tires are not good, you're all over the place. Plus comparing it to a CRF250L which my buddy just bought a 2019 one that was like brand new. This 300L has so much more torque and power. The only thing I've done to the bike is change the seat to seat concepts, and put Bark Busters on it. My buddy liked mine so much he ordered him a 300L and truly enjoys his as well. He says the same things that I say about it. We love the torque.

    @@omgji764 if i am doing a long pavement ride, I run 15/41 on my S. SM its would raise RPM due to smaller wheels. But I would say do not install a 16T front sprocket....yes, it will go on. But puts your chain scary close to your engine. Any slight chain slop will hit your engine right in front of the sprocket. I ignored all the people telling me this..i installed it on mine.....yep 1st day out it hit my engine. Started wearing a grove. Much more and it would have gone through the case and destroyed engine....dont do it. You can out a 39T on the back but well need to remove chain guide on bottom. When I do mostly dirt ride like the Idaho BDR. I run 14/44. Which I still can ride 70mph. Bit buzzy nut road from Nevada back to the top of Idaho where I left my car. You can go to Gearcommander.com and use their tool. Out in your bike, and it will give you stock gearing with speed and rpm in each gear. Change things up and it will give you speeds and rpm for what ever sprocket you choose. Thus making it easy to pick the right sprockets knowing they are what you want even before installing them. Its a great tool.

That scooter been ridden up from CA to Alaska down to KeyWest back to CA in one trip. Another trip when from CA to NY and back. I ran that thing WOT bouncing off the rev limiter everywhere and it was my daily commuter. Ran it WOT on the interstate from Miami up I95>I10>I20>I40 back into CA before I got off the interstate.

  • @drzrider3440

    @drzrider3440

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@omgji764 yeah, as long as you arent hitting right up against the Rev limiter, you are fine. The engine is designed to run up to 10,000rpm. The SM engine which is the same, has a rev limiter set at 10,500 rpm. So you can't really hurt the engine since it will cut the engine at 10,000 or 10,500 which every bike you have. I run around 7500 rpm at 80mph. When I rode home from Salt Lake City. I use a trail tech Vapor computer which gives me RPM, Speedo, water temp and outside temp, over heat light and shift lights. Also has odometer and trip, clock and timer. Well worth the $110 it cost me. It really comes down to what kind of vibration you can deal with. For me, 7500 rpm it seemed to kind of smooth out. Get above 8000 rpm and it starts to get higher vibration in handle bars. But still not hurting engine. When you do dyno runs they bring it up to rev limiter on every gear....doesnt hurt it. Main thing just be religious about changing oil. As long as you do regular maintenance, the DRZ will last forever. I got 50,000 miles before I needed to rebuild the head. Chanded my oil rather often. Some say too often. But its cheap and easy so i changed my oil in average between 1000 mile to 1500 miles unless I was on one of my 2000+ mile rides.

    I'm not sure I understand the point of comparing these two bikes in this way. I've a couple DRZs. And my brother currently owns a CRF300L. Off the showroom floor, their capabilities are nearly identical. The CRF is just lacking some of the power of the DRZ. The tighter gear box helps the CRFs feel a little snappier. The biggest difference in these two bikes, is seat height. If you're a newer or shorter rider, the CRF is probably a better choice for you. But if you're an experienced or taller rider, the DRZ is a much better machine in almost every way. And it take a lot more than a couple of high mileage examples, to make up for the highly successful, twenty year fun of the DRZ400.

    The DRZ has way better suspension, esp. the 2017+ models that are already well valved for woods riding and only need the proper springs for your weight. 10 less hp and 9 less lb-ft is not just "lacking some of the power of the DRZ'. It's a major difference that makes it unsuitable for anything other than tight woods riding unless you like riding slow or with the engine screaming everywhere.

    I think you are spot on with the DRZ400. I have a DRZ400S and I find it dangerously top heavy. This top heaviness cannot be fixed, I've tried. The engine sits too high in the frame. Suzuki needs to completely redesign the ergonomics with a modern design. If you ever experience a front wheel washout on the DRZ, because of the top heaviness, it will slam you to the ground hard and fast. Until Suzuki fixes the ergonomics and top heaviness, I would avoid the DRZ400S and E.

    You need to adjust the suspension!!! The bike is not top heavy and handles fine for more experienced riders. If it’s that bad buy a lowering link to lower your seat height!!!

    My wife has the CRF300 and I have a DRZ400 (and a KTM 350). The CRF 300 is a nice bike for a girl or a young entry level rider. It is not, however, even close to a DRZ400 in off road performance. Reliability and maintenance for both bikes is the same. The CRF300 has soft power and suspension that girls and new riders will feel comfortable with. If you have ever ridden a motorcycle, like to ride fast, climb challenging hills or tackle tough terrain, go with the DRZ400. If you have a lot of money (twice as much as the CRF or DRZ), don't mind doing lots of maintenance, carrying spare parts on your rides, go with a KTM 350 EXC-F.

    I think the main benefit to the drz is more power. The suspension on the crf isn't as good but it can be upgraded. Once that's done the crf can do anything the drz can do. Crf300 is lighter, fuel injected and has 6 gears. Lower seat height is nice for shorter people as well.

    Drz has about 5 extra horsepower provided the temps and altitude stay the same since it won't adjust for air density like an efi bike. Both are pretty slow though. Drz feels like it wants to explode on the highway.

    @@Largetalons 5hp difference? That's demonstrably false. I don't care how much power you think you'd lose because of 'altitude'. It ain't 50%.

    imo the crf300 just feels way better than the drz400 on the more rugged tighter trails. The overall comfort is better on the crf300 as well. I am not sure how people are saying the drz400 and crf300 is about the same. no way it is. they are vastly different and although the drz400 is awesome like we all know, but the crf300L is just way better. I've ridden both bikes. Performance wise, I cant think of one thing the CRF300L does better than the DRZ400S. It doesn't have as much power. And because the suspension is absolute junk, front and rear it doesn't handle very well. The CRF is a nice beginners/play bike. But not in the same level as the DRZ. And most experienced riders will agree.

    i've seen other videos of crf250ls failing in one day of trying to follow a drz400 offroad, so i reject your premise of the crf being more reliable it simply cannot do the same job as a 400e. 13/50 is ridiculously too low geared for a drz, i've ran 14/50 in hill climbs with large technical rock steps and found it too low to be useful and worse than 14/47 e gearing offroad. the 400e has twice the power of a crf it doesn't need to split it's ratios into 6 to avoid bogging, and with 15/44 s gearing it's cruising at the same revs on the highway as the crf300 but still has ample power for headwinds or overtaking and will reach it's max speed of 100mph quickly. ergonomics is something you change to suit yourself and to a degree so is handling you can make the drz turn much quicker by lifting the forks in the triples and running the rear axle as far forward as possible for a shorter wheelbase. the drz has far better suspension, compression and rebound dampening as well as high and low speed dampening on the shock the crf has zero adjustment it's cheap and nasty and isn't suitable for anything fast or particularly rough. overall build quality on the suzuki is much better, better quality controls, cables,frame pretty much name it and the suzuki is built better hence why the 400 is lighter than the 300l
