Dry Mouth
Complaints of dry mouth bedevil an enormous swath of the general population. Symptoms peak in excess of 50% among those over age 65, while dry mouth affects at least 20% of middle aged adults. Nighttime and mealtime elicit the worst manifestations of dry mouth.
Depending on severity, lack of adequate saliva complicates chewing and swallowing, leads to bad breath from bacterial overgrowth, increases the risk of oral candidiasis and causes burning tongue and a metallic taste. Dry mouth predisposes to rampant dental caries especially involving the roots and crowns.
Dry mouth or xerostomia represents a symptom that may or may not be accompanied by reduced output from the salivary glands. Under normal circumstances about 1.0-1.5 quarts of saliva are produced every day. Without the stimulation of eating or chewing saliva output averages 1 teaspoon every 12-14 minutes. Dry mouth generally indicates a flow rate of less that 1 teaspoon every hour.
A large array of prescription and over-the-counter drugs predispose to dry mouth. Dry mouth appears unusually common during the nighttime hours since the glands either stop manufacturing saliva or generate less than 1 teaspoon an hour.
Satisfactory therapy for dry mouth remains to be discovered.

Hi Dr Landu Thank You for Such e Informative Explanation. I have suffered with Dry Mouth, For 21 years now. My Mental Health Illnesses Depression Anxiety Vomiting Episodes. My Daily Medication for this Anti Depressants Psychotic Medication caused my Dry Mouth and The Other Conditions Ulcers inside my Mouth unable to eat food and extremely underweight, My Workcover Agent has rejected my request for Treatment to remove upper teeth and put implants . I can not believe they are refusing treatment and stated that Dry Mouth Does not cause Tooth Decline. I know this is not truthful as it’s a medical fact My Medication caused it. As I had never had it prior my teeth decay upper due to some missing teeth the decay deterioration was rapid. As I mention 21 years I have been taking Anti Depressants Psychcotic medication. I am shocked beyond belief there treat of me is BAD. So sorry xx

Blocked sinuses cause me to breath through my mouth in very dry climate at these times my mouth gets very dry, anyone else get this ?

Yes,even worse in comination with tramadol.
i have Dry mouth. i have 50 bottle 500ml of water a day and im sick of it. I told my doctor about it she said that water is good for you. seen a doctor at the hospital he said it's ok to drink a lot of water I said it's not good for you it's too much of water I have a sip of water every 2 minutes. I need help to stop this. I have a bottle of water next to my bed at night.

25 liters a day is insane, most people SHOULD drink 2-4 liters a day, but most dont even drink that much. Water is of course good for you, but any doctor who says 25 liters a day is fine and unproblematic is insane. I don't have any advice on what to do, but I want to validate that it is indeed very much a problem worth fixing.

I don't believe it's possible to drink that much water every day. Mistake? I hope that's not 50 plastic bottles. That'd be an insane environmental footprint he's imposing on the planet.

Peter I was the same. Use a dry mouth mouthwash. It will destroy your teeth. I had 5 fillings done today! It happened over a 9 month time period. I had great teeth before this. If the dry mouth is not from medicine, have your blood sugars checked. Anything over 100 is of concern. Diabetes is one cause of dry mouth. My sugar level was 500. I couldn’t swallow food or talk for more than 2 minutes. Diabetes can then cause Many other problems. Drinking too much water can also lead to low sodium levels that affect your brain function. ~~ Just my experience P.S. Change Doctors Immediately
