Dry Fly fishing for Trout | Scottish Highlands | River Lochay and Dochart | Fly-fishing in Scotland

Спорт

In June, I spent two days exploring the rivers Lochay and Dochart near Killin in the highlands of Stirlingshire. I found beautiful secluded glens, clear water, good hatches of mayfly and caddis and plenty of hungry trout willing to rise to a dry fly. Needless to say, catching them while filming brought its own challenges.
Shot on GoPro Hero 6, Nikon D3500 and iPhone 6sPlus
I got my fishing permit from James Bayne in Callendar (fishinginthetrossachs.co.uk/)
I got my music from the RedBull Media House (www.redbullsoundsupply.com/)

Greetings from Oregon. I used to live in England as a lad but now am in Central Oregon. I have been up there to Scotland and the Lake District over 50 years ago so the video strikes a familiar but dim & distant chord. I realize you & I both love the landscapes around the fish, which is half the beauty of the prize. If you chase trout you find yourself in the most gorgeous places to be found. That's the way it is with trout. Keep the work coming. Thanks for ringing a distant bell..

Edmund, thanks so much for the comment! You sound like a kindred spirit and I’m so happy the video struck a chord with you. I couldn’t agree with you more. Much as I love trout and would fish for them in a puddle by the road if I had to, these days I’m all about chasing wild trout in beautiful places. Wishing you all the best from the other side of the pond and I hope you’re safe and well in these strange times🎣🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

When despair grows in me and I wake in the night at the least sound in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be, I go and lie down where the wood drake rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting for their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free. Wendell Berry

What I am struggling to understand is why you only have 102 subs, when you’re content is such good quality, your editing and filming is very well put together, I know how much work goes into good quality videos, I run a KZread channel myself. You’ve either just started, or the algarythms aren’t doing you justice. I thought this video was great, I love fly fishing, anything out doors really, but I’ve fished man and boy, and love vids of this type and quality. You seem a nice guy as well. It’s a yes from me. Many thanks.

What I find surprising is with all that wild great brown trout fishing in Scotland , why there are so many holes in the ground with tailless rainbows offering expensive fishing and people go there instead of to the wild streams and lochs, makes no sense. Really enjoyed this film, I am a bit jealous, I have to travel to get to a river and you have loads near Glasgow (I think it’s Glasgow?) have a great season in 2021, thank you for posting.

Couldn’t agree with you more, David. Although to be fair there are some very well managed still waters. But I’d take a wild 10oz trout over a triploid rainbow all day long 👍🏼. You’re right about Glasgow too. I’m very fortunate to have urban trout fishing on my doorstep. Fingers crossed the restrictions ease and you manage to do a bit of fishing next year. At this stage nothing can be taken for granted 😔

Thanks mate! There are a few little private bits where you're not allowed to fish, but when you buy your ticket you should get a map too which points them out. That said, there's still miles of good water on both the Dochart and Lochay and you can fish Loch Tay with the same permit. Not bad for a few quid!

Definitely agree in principle. But I use barbless hooks so the main thing for me, especially early on, is keeping a tight line on the fish, otherwise the hook has a tendency to pop out! It’s not always easy to get a fish on the reel early without losing tension
