As others have noted, the catalog the Grateful Dead have is extenstive. If you choose, you've found a very deep rabbit hole to explore. The story about how Billy and Mickey, the drummers, learned to play together is interesting. You can find more on line, but here's a snippet: “So, Mickey would play a rudiment, and he would play the right arm and I would play the left. And you had to make it work.” “And we’d put our arms around each other to make it sync,” says Hart."

zappa and grateful dead in one day! my 2 favorites. been watching you get into zappa and the yes, genesis, king crimson stuff. totally my top-tier bands. now jerry. the dead. jerry garcia. holy f. what joy you have ahead. i've only been to about 25 dead shows. many have been to hundreds. the meat is in the live shows. BUT, i'd say you want to hear the "clean" versions of songs, then hear them fool around with it live. it's all about that - going where it goes, live. jerry is just hypnotic. kinda funny to me how "touch of gray" is of of their top songs. for years it was only played at shows. it was a little treasure when you got to hear it. i remember it taking on extra meaning after jerry returning, coming back from, one of his re-hab stints. "american beauty" and "workingman's dead" are a great studio album pair to start with. both are very clean, crisp sounding and jerry's voice is great. but, eventually... the live shows. wow.... literally life-changing.

Toms being a bit hyperbolic, but the song is their biggest mainstream hit although its on very few deadheads favorites list. Thus leading to a weird relationship between deadheads and this particular song. Its the worlds favorite but not MOST deadheads favorite so....

I gave Lee a choice of four songs and this is the one he chose. Fine by me. I am as much of a Deadhead as anyone, and it’s a good intro as any into this band with a catalogue that will keep him busy for many decades. Keep on truckin’ …. 😊

funny thing the leg bone made me remember. I was watching a show from above the drummers. mickey called to his tech and the tech came over and changed out his kick drum mid song. another fun drum thing. i was at a show and the other drummer, billy called to his tech and when he came over billy gestured to him to take the sticks mid song. he reluctantly did so while billy ran off stage. the tech finished the song and must have thought it was crazy accidentally playing with the dead live for a song. im happy for your first time ❤

My regard for the Dead was mostly academic or disinterested respect for their place in history and Jerry's musicianship for pedal steel on CSN's 'Marrakesh Express' and I think 'Teach Your Children'(?). Loved, unreservedly, this one when it came out. Caught it on Muchmusic, Canada's MTV equivalent late one night at the TV station I worked at.

Every drummer should hear Mickey Hart’s “Planet Drum”. Bill and Mickey are insanely tight; try therir earlier, more progressive works like “Estimated Prophet.” All of the Cornell Concert and Veneta Oregon concert tunes are great. Cheers!

This video was done over two days, daze?, at Laguna Seca Raceway, outside of Monterrey, CA. For a few more tunes to check out by The Dead you could try: "Truckin' ", "U.S. Blues", "Sugar Magnolia/Sunshine Daydream", "Help On The Way>Slipknot> Franklin's Tower", "Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain", "Morning Dew", "Dancing In The Streets" a cover, "Standing On The Moon", " Cumberland Blues", or "Turn On Your Lovelight". ...and leave it on! Only 450 more to go.

A guy I was in the Navy with was a HUGE Deadhead. I'd go see them with him because there were DRUGS APLENTY. Being in the Navy, they could be a little hard to come by. 😂 My buddy was, of course, at this show (it was in the Bay Area, their home and where we were stationed back in the late 80s). He swears he sees himself in one of the crowd shots. For like a 1/4 of a second. lol Too far away for verification, but the guy he pointed out was wearing the clothes that dude wore to every Dead show. Was it him? I dunno. PETER KEARNS, if you're out there ,this is Beaker. Hit me up!

Old eenough to be a "Dead Head" but I don't fit into that category. I really like Jerry Garcia (and Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia flavored ice cream) I just didn't go that far. I love their songs "Sugar Magnolia," "Casey Jones" (Cocaine song) and "Truckin."

One of their most loved tracks, used to be my favourite but these days I like others such as Row Jimmy a little bit more. This band has a deep influence that is hard to define. Those Jerry Garcia licks are so delightful.

My daughter loved this when this video came out. Most boring band live ever. They would sing a song, then spend 10 minutes bs’ing among themselves. And the Deadheads all sat in circles on the floor, not even paying attention to the band. But everyone was always so high then lol

At the Dead shows I went to, there may have been a few minutes between songs in the first set, but the second set generally featured a jam that included several songs with a drums> space bit in between. And NOBODY SAT ANYWHERE. Everyone was up and dancing for the whole show.
