This is one of my first Zappa albums, still I have not been able during the last years to find my way back to that laugh in the middle which is among the scariest most lonely sound I know of. And it has stayed in my head for 50 years. Thats impact!

I probably wouldn't have picked out a single track like this - I think it only really makes sense when you hear the album as a whole. There are actually some great songs on it - the kind with actual tunes and lyrics and things, that tell jolly and not so jolly little stories of the weird characters and goings-on in Zappa's externally observed universe, in the news, and/or in his head. I find it very entertaining. I first heard it (WOIIFTM) when I was around 15 or 16, in 1968. Rushed out and bought it as soon as I could, and played it over and over, relishing every track. By a strange twist of fate, I didn't actually become familiar with Sergeant Pepper, the Beatles album it was supposed to satirise (I think) until a couple of years later, when I proceeded to obsess over that, too.. I was actually surprised to earn that Frank Zappa's work was supposed to be some sort of parody of it. I couldn't see much connection other than the cover art, obviously. I thought it stood up on its own merits, expressing Californian 'hippie' ideas and attitudes (in parody and/or maybe at times, quite seriously) whereas SPLHCB was British counter-culture to the core. Odd/ little known fact: another (and rather better known) person who was obsessed with We're Only In It For The Money was Freddie Mercury. This was in his London (Barnes) flat sharing days, well before fame and fortune struck with Queen. Apparently he played it very loudly, on endless repeat, for hours and hours, completely immersed, for days on end... Not sure whether I can see any influence from it in his own song-writing, but I thought it was kind of an interesting thing to contemplate.

After decades of not knowing the truth. I came to find out that Jimi Hendrix was really there for the album cover photo shoot. Frank's wife Gail is shown standing between Frank and Jimi. She was pregnant with Moon at the time. The black guy standing at the far left is MGM-Verve record producer Tom Wilson.

Another name for this tune would be: The Big Silver Reel to Reel Tape Machine, run Amok. This whole tune was done by shutting off the motors, and moving the reels by hand... A studio trick when editing tapes that helps find the exact place on the tape. This was near the end of a very awesome album.

Ha ha, it’s so much fun that you did this. I’m among the weird people that actually enjoy this track and revolution 9, and sound painting in general. What I noticed is that your requesters are definitely taking you to the deepest end of the pop pool, which is fun. I would say don’t judge this album by this one track, good or bad, because it’s very different from the rest of the album. Lots of amazing lyrics about society and hippies and changing attitudes. And it all flows together like one piece of music. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but this is an outstanding early Zappa album not to be missed.

@@L33Reacts Haha, yes! I remember trying to describe Zappa to someone… saying it goes from some of the most beautiful to some of the most ugly things you’ve ever heard. Highly-structured genius level music, followed by total randomization and “found” composition. But it’s like trying to describe the color blue to someone who’s never seen it. The thing I love about your channel is that youre not only open minded, but you’re also honest when something doesn’t connect with you. But your batting average is really strong. That’s more rare on KZread than it should be, and that’s how you hooked me, so nice job. :)

I missed your intro so maybe you are aware that Zappa recommended reading In the Penal Colony by Franz Kafka to appreciate the song. a story in which a captive has his crimes tattooed on his body by a government machine.

You can't start this wonderful and one of the best albums Zappa did by listening to the last track (the only track I don't listen to on the album). All the songs are connected and should be listen to in order to get the best experience out of the record. The most playful and funny record ever made, in my opinion. I'm really looking forward to listen to the whole album with you.

Excellent Album, one of his best especially for the mid-1960's. But since the tunes are all 2-3 minutes or less and intermixed with Narration usually you have to play the tunes 1/2 album at a time. You can't just request a tune, will not make much sense out of context. Really great Music. This Album is a Parody to BEATLES: Srg. Peppers. Look at the cover and how Zappa was making fun at the most popular band in the world in 1968. Part of a small feud Zappa had with John Lennon. All started with Freak_Out when the Beatles stole Zappa's ideas. Playing just 1-tune is completely out of content. This album is about the Fake Hippy Movement as Zappa seen it in the San-Fran Hatch Street area. Very apparent his displeasure in the first 4 songs. Then the saddest song every written is MOM and DAD. If listen to in context, it is likely to make you CRY...! Many versions of this album were released. The 1982 Rico Disk version was personally re-edited by Frank for some of the missing tracks the Record Music Studio lost.

It's not a song; it's an avant-garde montage (Zappa did a lot of those...influenced by Varese & Stockhausen). Zappa plays a bicycle towards the end. Both sides of the album begin & end with a montage. It makes more sense if you're on acid. I listened to it on a lot of acid trips, back in the '80s & early '90s.
