Drummer reacts to "Love is Blindness/Can't Help Falling In Love" (Zoo TV) by U2

Музыка

Well Laura... you were right. You were absolutely right. Wow. This was an incredible performance. We get a lot of those... but this was just so intimate. Like having the entire world around you as you lock eyes with the love of your life... it's just you and them. No one else.... but in reality you are surrounded. I felt like he was singing to ME... so damn good. The Edge's guitar was fantastic in the first track.

Zoo TV was their peak of relevance and creativity in pop culture. This version of Love Is Blindness elevates the intensity and drama with an extended guitar solo from Edge and Bono’s theatrics. Bullet The Blue Sky is another must see performance from this concert

When the Edge recorded to solo for this track on the Achtung Baby album, he played so hard that one by one, the strings started snapping as he played. That's the take that's on the record. He was going through a nasty divorce at the time, and channeled all his rage, sadness and confusion into that solo.

Zoo TV was probably the most influential stadium tour of all time. A multimedia overload. They were the first music act ever to have a stage out in the crowd and a walkway going to it. Every stadium tour you see today has a hint of zoo tv in it It’s a must see concert

I subscribed because of your Beatles reactions. However, U2 has been the most important band to me since I was 13; I’m 53 now. They are, arguably, the biggest band of the last 40 years. Constantly challenging themselves to create in different musical spaces. The deep cuts from every era are stellar and identifiable as U2, even though they run the gamut from punk to pop to folk to rock anthems to discotheque chic to atmospheric and ballads among others. As entertainers, they are peerless in their use of technology as visual art and their performances as theater. If you haven’t yet, check out U2 October/Bullet the Blue Sky live in Paris; I believe it’s from 2015. Keep following your bilss! You’re doing great 👍🤘🏽

If I can make a suggestion, listen to the last 3 songs on Achtung Baby!!! I am a big U2 fan, have all of their albums but my favorite is Achtung. The “Trilogy” (as I call it) at the end is composed of “Ultraviolet”, “Acrobat”, and one of their greatest , “Love Is Blindness”. I love the dark mood surrounding these songs. They take you to another place where you feel vulnerable & lonely in the midst of darkness. Ultraviolet opens with the lyric … “Sometimes I feel like I don’t know, sometimes I feel like checking out….. And love it won’t be long”. “Acrobat” tells a story of someone who is conflicted. Bono says “Don’t let the bastards grind you down.” Love is Blindness is just amazing and you heard that one for yourself!!!

I was lucky enough to catch some ZOO TV shows in the summer of '93. I was always blown away by this show. Ending it on such an intense song followed by an Elvis cover was so unexpected. To leave the crowd with that rather than a bit hit, really served the show well. The beaten down version of MacPhisto with the smudged make up and the melancholy self reflection is such a contrast to the outrageous bombast of 'Daddy's Gonna Pay for Your Crashed Car' and 'Lemon' just a few songs before it. It's superb theatre mixed with technology and powerful songs. If you like that, check out 'Acrobat' from them too, 'Mothers of the Disappeared' and maybe 'Exit' - live from The Joshua Tree tour 2017 or even the Sphere for Acrobat. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

So glad you liked it, Lee! It closed the show on the ZooTV tour. And, yeah, live and deep cuts are the way to go for most U2. Bono seemingly takes in the energy of the crowd and sends it right back out to everyone. Seen them in person twice, but sadly not for Zoo. Best live performance I've seen of anyone or thing, ever. Genesis in the late 90s was damn good, but there's just something special about these guys live. The lyrics to this are incredible too, as are all the lyrics on Achtung Baby. The band was about to break up during this time, and they were best friends and family for almost two decades by that time, and still all together now. Bono still married to his childhood sweetheart. The Edge has always taken his guitar playing very seriously, and works really hard to achieve just the right sound always. Yes, Bono has a way of making it seem like he is singing to each individual. Imagine how it is live! Thanks so much for doing this, Lee! :)

@lauraallen55 You are so right about the deeper cuts. I could start listing cuts most haven't heard but I'd be here all day. Was lucky enough to see Zoo TV in Ames Iowa, hard to believe it was in Iowa. Also saw them in Iowa City for the first Joshua tree tour way back when. Had backstage passes and was standing in a hallway as they exited and Larry mullen jr. Handed me his drumsticks. They hang in a glass case on my wall to this day. Excellent choice one of my favorite songs by them.

Yeah, I actually did try to list some of their songs most haven't heard of in another post, and didn't get far because, like you said, it would take all day. I got the Best ofCDEs with the limited bonus disc of b-sides when it came out, and listened to that disc more than the others. It had a different version of Sweetest Thing (that turned out to be the original with the alternate getting radio play).and it was a bit edgier then the one I knew and I preferred it by a mile. Bono wrote this song (Love is Blindness) for Nina Simone, in the late 80s. The band rehearsed it, and The Edge asked for it to be held back for U2's next album. The Edge was going through a multi-year separation from his wife, and he developed a connection with the song ... playing it was cathartic for him. I think he was deep in the divorce trenches at the time of this live performance.

Love is blindness. I don't want to see. Won't you wrap the night around me. Blindness. The lyrics are like he wants love and to be in love is to be blind, and he'd rather be blind than not have love. There is a lot more to some of the verses, like - in a parked car on a crowded street you see your love made complete - is about bombings in London, I believe. They're Irish, and all of that conflict over time with England and Northern Ireland is meaningful to them. One of their big arena songs that I do really like more than most of that type is Sunday Bloody Sunday, which is of course about Bloody Sunday in Ireland when the British army shot and killed about 30 people in the streets in Derry. It was 1972 and they were young teens at the time, so they grew up with the conflict. Religion, man. It seems like it's always that. The lyrics - a little death without mourning refers to - from Wiki: 'La petite mort ('the little death') is an expression that refers to a brief loss or weakening of consciousness, and in modern usage refers specifically to a post-orgasm sensation as likened to death.' Bono's lyrics for majority of their songs are very personal to him, and tend to be about a lot of things at once. He writes lyrics like a stream of consciousness at times. One of my favorite lyrics is from another song from Zoo/Achtung Baby, The Fly: Every artist is a cannibal. Every poet is a thief. All kill their inspiration and sing about the grief. I'm so happy that my intuition was right and that you would prefer this side of U2 as I do. I wish I'd come across your channel long before I did, but glad I'm here now! I believe it was London Calling that I saw first. Subscribed right away then. My top favorite artists are The Beatles, U2, Genesis, The Who, The Clash, Bowie but I have a really wide variety of taste when it comes to music. Love that you have a schedule you show us the day before, and that you keep to. Haven't seen that before, and subs really appreciate that, btw.

Brian Eno produced the album this song (Love is Blindness) is from. Album came out before Zoo tour and before Zooropa, called Achtung Baby, and Brian Eno was a producer on that album. Zoo Station was the opener and this was the closer. Every song was more of not what you would expect from U2. They completely reinvented themselves for AB. The costume and makeup was Mr. McPhisto, and at one point included devil horns lol! One of the songs from Zoo and AB is Mysterious Ways, and for Zoo they had a belly dancer who turned out to marry The Edge, still married today, too. :) On the album, The Edge, who typically had a light touch on the guitar, broke a few strings he played so hard on this song, and just kept going. He was going through a divorce from his first wife, along with the band on the brink of breaking up. The song One is one of their biggest from the early 90s time period. Radio play and a really good song on top of it for fans that were more into them, both. That song, more than any other was about the band nearly splitting. It also became the name of a campaign of theirs. U2 are a bunch of 'do-gooders' and for whatever reason, it's something Bono has been criticized for. He's met with political leaders, including various Presidents of ours for the purposes of reducing the debt of Africa, and ending extreme poverty, and AIDS research, and on and on. Using one's voice for such things seems a noble thing to do, but people will complain about anything. The set for ZooTV was insane and taller, bigger and more elaborate than any that had been done before. There were dozenss of actual TVs broadcasting from various places. One or two of the songs show them. There was a giant camera and boom that Bono 'interacted' with at one time... you'll have to see that one lmao! He called the President at one point, had something like 300 pizzas delivered to the audience, all kinds of things going on with this concert. I'll probably request The Fly or Zoo Station next month so you can see more! Thank you so much for the reaction, Lee.

KZread is certainly a good band they are extremely successful and I understand why. I wanted to start out with that. Because of what I'm about to say and I didn't want it misconscrewed. But as far as I'm concerned, the reason I stopped listening to or following KZread, many years ago was because they were repetitious in that every single song they put out sounded like the song before it. And of course, their sound is great. That's easy to tell who they are, even if you hear them doing a song. You've never heard previous. But once again they became monotonous. They sounded the same constantly. No matter what new song they did, whatever changes might have been. It just stopped working for me. What I do like is the kind of a man that Bono is. He obviously recognized. There was more to life than just music and he put his money where his mouth is. And he's done a lot of personal good with his success and his money's that he's earned with that success. Another thing that bothers me, which is not their fault is the way music stations played the hell out of them to the point where a song you really loved, you couldn't even Force yourself to listen to Anymore. Because I've how they played it into oblivion. One thing I do love though is your channel.

The hate they receive is usually from people who’ve never listened to them, have listened to a bit after they already made their mind up or people who’s politics have infested so much of their life that they can’t listen to someone sing a song because they lean to other way politically. Sad but that’s where we are these days.
