CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Devon (Nick Cannon) shows his stuff to Sean (Leonard Roberts), but Sean's got experience and humility on his side.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Drumline brings the world of "show-style" marching bands (popular at traditionally black, Southern colleges) to the big screen for the first time. The story, by Shawn Schepps, was inspired by the high school drumline experiences of executive producer/executive music producer Dallas Austin. Devon (Nick Cannon of Nickelodeon's The Nick Cannon Show) is a Harlem drummer who earns a full scholarship to the fictional Atlanta A&T University. There, his talent gets the attention of the school's embattled musical director, Dr. Lee (Orlando Jones), who puts his students' education and appreciation for musical tradition ahead of the marching band's popularity. Devon's brashly egotistical attitude doesn't endear him to Lee, whose slogan for the band is "One band, one sound," or to the drumline's disciplined captain, Sean (Leonard Roberts, late of TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Devon has more success with the dance captain of the marching band, Laila (Zoe Saldana, who played a ballet dancer in Center Stage), a Southern belle who's won over by Devon's confidence. Sean feels threatened by Devon's talent, and his attitude, so when he learns that Devon can't read music, he uses the information to his advantage. With the band facing their archrival at a huge marching band competition, Dr. Lee has to decide whether to allow the brilliant drummer to perform, despite his attitude. Devon has to prove that he can show his skills while still being part of the team. Drumline was directed by Charles Stone III (Paid in Full), and features cameo appearances by musical artists Blu Cantrell and Petey Pablo.

Sean went through an arc, so did Devon, hell even Dr.Lee went through change. Thats the heart of this movie.

That's what I loved about the film...EVERYONE had their faults and through teamwork they all overcame them and became one. From Devon's arrogance, Sean's power trip to Dr. Lee's sticking to traditional yet unpopular music...they all made a turn!! Hell, even Devon's absent father made a better late than never attempt to reconcile his mistakes with his son!!

This movie is responsible for sparking a huge increase in band scholarships and people getting into the band in high-school One of the more underrated movies in that regard. You don't get movies made like this anymore that can have that impact. A lot of young African Americans took up the band in high-school and got full-ride scholarships because of this movie. I remember bring it on had a similar impact on cheerleading throughout the country where competition cheer went through the roof.

Your worst enemies could end up becoming your best friends. It's crazy but that happened to me too in school with someone I used to fight with all the time.
When Devon says "You ain't heard me since I stepped on campus." And "You don't know ish about me" I take that to mean he was saying you as the leader hated on me and judged me without even getting to know me or giving me a fair chance. Sean saying "You the best Devon " He finally recognized that Devon is very talented but needs guidance and ends up offering to help him!!! OG move by Sean!!! 💯💯

Why is everyone hating on this movie? I thought it was a classic. Soo Much better than Drumline 2. This is Nick Cannon' s best work and what he's famous for. People....its okay not to be a hater all your life.

And real ones can spot prospective ones too. When i was in Marching Band in High School, i always messed around on my friends snare drum(dont worry. I was an immature kid and learned MUCH later that this is a no no without the drummers blessing first) on game days between field rehearsals and gametime(everyone would go eat or do whatever or each other, but i would stay and chill at the stadium) and once he came back early and found me drumming away and according to him, better than himself (he was the Drumline Captain). I apologized and went to give him his drum back and he said i should have tried out for the Line. I told him i wanted to, but never did because of what another drummer said they were going to do. After asking what, i told him Daniel said everyone in the Drumline was quitting their jobs, and paying for a cell-phone, truck and vehicle insurance, i couldnt do that. He then told me that they were NOT doing that and that i should try out again the next year. I never did

WORLDSTARHIPHOP • 1M views • That was definitely one of the messages in the film. Another message I got out of the film and this scene in particular is how we as black people try to bring each other down and how we should learn to lift each other up. That was the major dynamic between Devon and Sean. Sean was too busy trying to bring Devon down but in the end they learn to come together for the greater good.
