CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Devon (Nick Cannon) tries out for A&T's marching band to slightly hostile judges.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Drumline brings the world of "show-style" marching bands (popular at traditionally black, Southern colleges) to the big screen for the first time. The story, by Shawn Schepps, was inspired by the high school drumline experiences of executive producer/executive music producer Dallas Austin. Devon (Nick Cannon of Nickelodeon's The Nick Cannon Show) is a Harlem drummer who earns a full scholarship to the fictional Atlanta A&T University. There, his talent gets the attention of the school's embattled musical director, Dr. Lee (Orlando Jones), who puts his students' education and appreciation for musical tradition ahead of the marching band's popularity. Devon's brashly egotistical attitude doesn't endear him to Lee, whose slogan for the band is "One band, one sound," or to the drumline's disciplined captain, Sean (Leonard Roberts, late of TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Devon has more success with the dance captain of the marching band, Laila (Zoe Saldana, who played a ballet dancer in Center Stage), a Southern belle who's won over by Devon's confidence. Sean feels threatened by Devon's talent, and his attitude, so when he learns that Devon can't read music, he uses the information to his advantage. With the band facing their archrival at a huge marching band competition, Dr. Lee has to decide whether to allow the brilliant drummer to perform, despite his attitude. Devon has to prove that he can show his skills while still being part of the team. Drumline was directed by Charles Stone III (Paid in Full), and features cameo appearances by musical artists Blu Cantrell and Petey Pablo.

    it was a piece that was written only for the audition. it's supposed to be their first time seeing it thus no chance memorize it. if you watched the movie you would know that Devin at this point can't read music. but he can hear a beat and memorize it instantly which is where his talent lies. he heard the other guys go before him and watched and memorized there. that's why there was concern over him not looking at the sheet music.

    The question: Who memorizes an audition piece was both suspicion and jealousy on behalf of Sean. Thing is... Devon isn't supposed to read it. They don't care if he read it or not, but... it let Sean know Devon can't read music. If you are supposed to read a paragraph at school, your teacher won't care if you memorize it or not, unless... they want to test your reading skills, which Devon had none and it was a requirement.

    Auditions will often include a prepared piece (like this scene) and a sight reading piece, meaning music you've never seen before. They expect you to stumble in the sight reading piece, but it's a measure of how quickly you can pick up something new. If Dr. Lee had done that, he would have realized right away that Devin cannot read music. Paired with his impressive prepared piece, Dr. Lee would have recognized that Devin is a musical prodigy who lacks formal training. The movie would have been a lot shorter and less dramatic. I blame all of the tension in the film on Dr. Lee for putting together a half-assed audition with no sight reading.

  • @stevenwilder254

    @stevenwilder254

    2 жыл бұрын

    But it was a sight reading piece though, that’s why Sean immediately became suspicious when Devon didn’t look at the sheet music “who memorizes an audition piece, it’s complicated..they expect you to stumble through it” Presumably the other freshmen went before Devon so he watched and heard them play the piece and memorized it that way.

  • @surbyug

    @surbyug

    @@stevenwilder254 you paraphrased the line and took out a critical part "it's supposed to be read". This specifically implies that it isn't a sight reading piece, but that they assumed it would be read because of how complicated the piece is.

From my own personal experiences trying out for honor bands in high school, people who usually make it play the pieces so much that they end up having it memorized. It's been well over a decade since I read sheet music, but I can still hear those pieces in my head from practicing them so much.

But, when you step on campus and start getting involved in Greek Life, the band, the drumline and pick up on the cadences, auditions, tree shaking, etc. you start to understand what some of the college grads who watched the film were talking about lol I still love this movie though.

    It's funny he plays this complicated and impressive piece that he completely memorized by ear because he cant read music and then plays 10 seconds of some bullshit at the end that proved nothing and the band directors didn't even ask him to play it

    This movie was pretty cool to see when I younger because it was my dream to be a drummer and I thought that it was so real and now that I am one it’s kinda funny to see how drum line is not like this I mean band camp but they make it seem like it’s military style. It’s a good throwback movie but it’s just a little to much. Some of the sticking and drum logic didn’t even make any sense like the back stick and at the beginning during the graduation when they were playing concert snare drums and they sounded like marching snares. And a scene where he was playing some diddles and he was playing match grip and then he somehow managed to switch to traditional cleanly.

    Few hundred years ago there was a music considered so sacred by the Vatican, Miserere mei Deus by Allegri. It was considered so holy that it was kept as a secret in Vatican’s vault and it could only be heard in the Sistine Chapel. A young boy was there on a family vacation, heard the music and felt in love with it. When he got home, he managed to recreate the entire music. People now know him as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

    I don’t think a lot of these people in the comments understand that band auditions (at least in America) test your ability to SIGHT READ. In most cases, judges hand you a song that you haven’t seen and more than likely haven’t heard before so you can’t practice beforehand. Now of course this is a movie do liberties are taken, but this is definitely not the norm either.
