Zach Hill is indeed one of a kind. Everything from his playing to instantly recognizable figure, hunched over his drum set like a mad scientist in a lab, concocting something terrifying. It sounds like madness at first, but there is a method to it. I absolutely love the flow he creates. It's much more of a stream of consciousness than a rigidly constructed grid. Very creative, so expressive.

If you like Zach Hill check out Ashley Marlowe from Charlottefield. Hard to believe he isn’t a drum legend for his work with that band. Same busy energy, but a bit more jazz in origin.
Hella is quintessential Math Rock. As far as I know Zach Hill is completely self-taught. You can see his intensity on full display in his performance with Death Grips at Coachella in 2016. Really cool to hear your perspective! Great video!

"there's a structure a form, in the chaos"...nailed it. I think I heard a few songs once, and my brain went "What!?!?" It was so next level, like taking a Primus album and changing the knob on the record player to the fastest setting. It's difficult to comprehend, and nearly impossible to replicate.

I was lucky enough to catch Zach in smaller Toronto clubs 5 times from 06-10. Some of the absolute best shows I’ve ever been to. No one plays with more intensity than Zach. He sweated a literal 1cm deep puddle around his entire kit with Marnie Stern @ the silver dollar room in July. He’s definitely worth a deep dive

Bro, fuck work….it’s Death Grips.
He has a jazz track (Necromancer) with a piano player totally improvised around 30 minutes long that is insane. He is the king of stamina with his intensity. Another great video to react to is him and Mick Barr. It's possibly the most impressive high intensity session I've ever seen at around 10 minutes of going 100% speed. His other main attribute is his creativity with his beats. He's been in soooo many bands it's hard to recommend one thing.

It's insane how consistent hella play these songs over the years, hearing the plethora of recordings they've done and other stuff like this. It's amazing. Just how complex hill is. I'd say maybe only. Brian chippendale from lightning bolt could compare in pure rawness

Raw! That’s the word!
In the Modern Drummer interview from 2006 (Damon Che is also in the issue) Zach said he intentionally has most of the drums and cymbals touching each other so they vibrate the whole set to create even more sound
Holy shit, Hella and Zach Hill is an absolute rabbit hole.... good luck :) Absolute amazing band! Doesn't make sense when you first hear them but somehow they are entrancing... all of a sudden you are listening to them every day on the way to work on the bus, and have a thousand other mathrock bands on your playlist years later.

Was lucky enough to be perched on the stage right in front of Gabes kit, during a Locust gig at The Underworld in London back in '03 or so. One of the best gigs I've ever been to yet.
I saw him play life in Mannheim Germany and those videos don’t come close to seeing him live in action. He looks so much faster. And he is also the most social of death grips, waving to the fans and smiling. Next time I have to stand on the other side of the stage. To watch him a bit closer.
more hella reactions pls pls pls. there’s a live performance of their song “been a long time cousin” which still after watching it 100+ times, blows my mind !
wholesome take. I really like how this guy appreciates the DIY approach. i get really tired of the technical people critiquing everything.

@@AndrewRooneyDrums The record this track is on came out in 2002, the same year I joined my first math rock band. The guitar player from that band was from the same town as these guys, and had a hand-made demo version of the cd. I remember first listening to it...it was a take-your -ball-and-go-home or let-yourself-be-inspired moment. Apparently he was self-taught (lotta hyphens man), and as you mentioned, he sort of transcended the limits and 'rules' of drumming. To be clear though, I wouldn't consider him among my favorites, as he's such an over-player, but his uniqueness and passion deserve a ton of respect. Cheers.
I loved his work for Team Sleep too. Including the leaked demos.

It's really funny as a long time hella fan to watch some1 hear them who knows classical drums try to understand hella
I love that you posted this!! The original song - and the rest of his work - must be listened to closely to really “get it”. And it took me 25+ listens (and then watching him play it live several times) to realize every note is planned. There are no “fills” that he adds to this song. He finds and fills pockets with more pockets. There is a section where he intentionally alternates back forth hitting the snare slightly before and then slightly after the matching guitar note. Once you hear it you can’t unhear it. The “reggae” section (sort of a bridge before the insanely complicated pattern that ends the song), sounds for all the world like an echo was added to the track, but it’s just double taps to both the snare and guitar that make that effect. Don’t get me started. Yep, he overplays. He is marching to the beat of his own drummer (him!).
I love this. Thank you. Subbed.
I think the award for lowest snare drum goes to the don caballero drummer, guys practically punching his knees on every hit! I'm so happy to see much react content on Hella, one of the flagstones of the controversially labelled Math Rock genre. Personally I like the phrase jazz-punk. This video was likely recorded in 2002 looking at their setup. They did explore 3, 4 and 5 piece Hella bands, but for most the 2 piece is regarded the golden age of Hella. Though I would argue the 5 piece album has some of Zach's best drumming. Been nerding over these guys since the early 2000s and their music still blows me away today, I hope you have a chance to listen to more. Take care. Quick edit, it's interesting you picked up on drum and bass, he said once in an interview that dnb was his favourite genre. You can definitely hear the influence more in his solo work and work with death grips
Search for Zach Hill practice. He will show you he has one of the fastest single kick foot and hands. It’s literally single kick non stop and rolls for minutes.

Love your reactions!! Even if you don't react, I think an EVEN BETTER intro do Zach's playing is the love version of Been a Long Time Cousin by Hella. Vid is on KZread. Incredible!! Honestly, can't go wrong with Zach. His playing and music (especially Death Grips, but also Hella) changed my view on what drums and music in general can even be, back in high school. I also went to jazz school for drums, I remember showing Matt Wilson a Hella live video, he loved it as well haha.
Great review! Have been hoping you'd cover him for years. The studio version is SO much cleaner, it's a better place to start for pure listening. There is way more structure than the live video eludes to. Thanks again.

Wait till he sees Damon Che's snare placement :D Btw what Hella fans would like from a drum teacher is some explanation of his bass pedal technique. Is it taught normally? Where does it come from, other drummers that do it, and to what extent? Is he the fastest at it? Take a look at his Vans commercial to have a clear view.
