Paul from Origin worked at the Guitar Center I used to go to. We had a great conversation about how ridiculously talented John is. Paul said John would literally just zone out during rehearsals, start staring off into the distance while blowing bubble bum and exisiting on autopilot. He said the entire band would be sweating...but John looked like he was reading a book waiting for a bus. Hahaha

I've been in 3 different bands that have opened for Origin as their direct support. I've had a lot of fun and aggressive arguments and discussions with John. He's a great guy. Me and him have had a lot of difference in opinion since 2005. I've been lucky enough to hangout with him for hours on end, pick his brain, argue, joke, etc. I've watched him from 8ft away with The Red Chord and Origin 5 times, I think? Dude is the real deal! It was weird to me when he started doing 2 foot blasts and heel-toe. He was NOT a fan of that until around 2007. He toured with Obscura and Hannes turned him on to it. He took it further by hitting up the heel-toe'ers on the "Derek Roddy Forum" (Long defunct forum.... the best EVER! If you're a veteran you know...) then practiced his ass off and then Origin released "Aftermath".

Origin guys are really down to earth. Quick story: I was hanging out with them at their merch table and there was no one around. The singer was chilling there eating a sandwich. All the other tables were crowded and I was like what the hell? You guys are amazing! He replied, it’s all good, people will be here after the set. And wow were they right! It was madness after they played. They’re as tight and incredible live as they are on their records. Fantastic band and really awesome guys. Glad to support them!

Longstreth is also one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Speaking of cold starts, that's the one thing I have struggled with the most, going from a dead stop to 290 bpm is really really hard but if you watch just before he gets back into it, look at the beaters, where they are and the muscles in his arms. You pre-tense everything and then release but its hard.

This is why I love drumming (am a hobby drummer, I only play for myself and for my enjoyment). You not only create music, but have to actually hit/beat the drums, which is not only physically exhausting (so that you can calm down/get tired enough not to have energy to be angry anymore), but you actually get to HIT stuff without BREAKING it! 10/10 stress control for me, would recommend to anyone. Aric Improta also plays the 20`` Classic Dark Crash. It´s not the sound I am aiming for, but for this kind of music they are very balanced and well rounded out. Buddy of mine, which plays this things is very happy with the sound and most importantly for these guys the durability.

So much technique going on in Longstreth, I'm surprised, as a drum teacher, no more analysis. Double strokes on the bass drum. One-handed cymbal choke. Open handed. Single foot blast. Unison blast. His fills. Ride accents when blasting. Etc.

The Classic Custom Dark Cymbals are pretty much perfect in a Live Heavy (or any other) Metal environment due to their sharpness. Also they are easy to control with reasonable decay. In the Studio setting I would much rather use Byzance (at least for the crashes that is) because of their complexity.

One thing I've always been interested in seeing is some kind of brain/neuromuscular monitoring of an extreme metal musician while playing stuff like this. It would be equally interesting with both drummers and guitarist. Aside from it being simply interesting to see what goes on when they perform stuff like this, it could maybe help with research into prevention and management of focal dystonia.
