Hey Andrew, someone has probably already commented on this, but John Rutsey , the original drummer, had Type 1 Diabetes. Rush was all set to do their first US tour. Their manager was quite concerned that not only would the tour be too taxing for John it would endanger his health. So the manager decided they would need a replacement for the tour. I don't remember how Neil Peart came to be selected. I do recall, from documentary I saw, that at first Alex and Lee weren't too crazy about Neil's playing style. The rest is, as they say, history. Phenomenal effort by Brandon. I've seen him in other Drumeo videos, covering various styles of music. This guy knows his stuff and he definitely does his homework. All the hard work aside, it must have been a treat for Brandon to play on that kit. Hope you're having a good summer in Kiwi land. I'm freezing my butt off in Montreal, Canada. Cheers!

Looking at comments that Brandon left on the original video…he and an audio engineer came up with the medley, then he listened to it three times a day for ten weeks while practicing on weekends…and yes, it appears to be a single take. I feel SO unaccomplished, lol. What a spectacular achievement!

They are not saying the final video is one take. They said Brandon recorded full takes (plural). There is moments where you can see a cut (for example one arm being in different place between shooting angles. Amazing performance still, but would probably be near impossible to be this good with one single take.

The very BEST thing about it is that Brandon is serving the flow of the medley throughout, not trying to impress us with the most technical parts of each song (which he is clearly capable of). Neil would have appreciated that, I'm sure. It's done with skill, respect and even a little humour. The only issue is that you can't just watch one bit of it (as you experienced, Andrew). It's all or nothing.

Notice "Test For Echo" in 1996, then Nothing until 2002 "Vapor Trails". The 6 year space of silence is because an 11 month stretch began with Peart's daught killed in a single-car crash, then ending with his 1st wife dying of cancer. Neil left on a 25,000 mile motorcycle trip through Canada, USA, Mexico, into Central & South America. Most of us Rush fans thought that was the end of Rush.

Hold Your Fire, Power Windows, Signals, Roll the Bones all have some of my favorite Rush songs. Dreamline and Bravado are just incredible. I mean, it's Rush. A bad Rush song is another band's dream. lol. The video seems to have been shot in chunks. There are cuts that happen right when song changes happen and there are song changes without a camera cut. I can see them doing this in a series of chunks and then just editing it together with the full backing medley. Just for pure sanity. I don't doubt that he could do this in one take, but that would be brutal mentally and physically. Always forget how brutal the change in ton from Test for Echo to Vapor Trails is. And I love that for Clockwork Angels they went back to a more thematic album. A story of life and the journey. That album, culminating in The Garden, is the absolute perfect swan song to end an incredible career on.

Yes... check Bravado from RIO (it's a bit extended from the album version). It was one of Neil's favourites (how the drums evolved through the track) and the Drum channel used to have a video with Neil talking about it (think it was from one of Neil's Drumming DVDs)

It all becomes clear that RUSH is in a class all of their own. As a loyal fan for 46 years this melts my heart. I heard many of these songs live. A RUSH concert was always a thing of beauty and YES, I can recite every single RUSH song ever recorded. Glad you have taken u the challenge, you won’t be disappointed.

I don't know if anyone has suggested you check out the documentary "Beyond The Lighted Stage" or not. If you want to get as close as you possibly can to understanding Rush in a couple of hours this is a great place to start. You don't even need to be a Rush fan to appreciate the Doc. It got a standing ovation at either Caane's or Sundance film festival. Can't remember for sure which it was . I showed it to my 82 year old mother and she thought it was great . It's a lot more than a bunch of concert footage and some comments like most band doc's tend to be. You will love it guaranteed.

Amazing. Thanks for reacting to this. The Feedback album (2004) was covers of ( 60s-70s) songs that were influential to them, their only covers recorded on albums, but the vid began with a non album recording of Buddy Holly's Not Fade Away. The ones that you particularly pointed out: Lakeside park,, Kid Gloves, Bravado, Double Agent, Working Them Angels, Bravest Face, Caravan. ( I think)

Brandon did an amazing job on this tribute to Neil!! It was hilarious watching your brain melt the further he got into the discography. 😂 Something to consider - you're only getting about an 8 second 'snapshot' of each song. As most Rush songs last around 5 to 8 minutes with multiple transitions and change ups, 🤷 well... 🤯 If that's not enough to break your brain, I don't know what is! If nothing else, it should give you a little more insight into why we fans (and so many other musicians) hold them in such high esteem. 😍🥰

What is the greatest resource for drummers, students and professionals, online? When you get asked these questions, show them this video (DRUMEO)

Thanks for doing this Andrew!. A lot of people think Neil was naturally gifted, and he certainly was in a lot of ways. A less understood truth tho he practiced a lot, he worked his craft until he became what we know and respect. Neil continued to work on his skills and his technics his entire career. Brandon shares that mentality with Neil and is continually honing and reworking his skillset. This video is a example of what hardwork and dedication can achieve. Fun Fact. I have the sticks used in this video. Signed and in my studio. One of my most treasured items... I swear they are Magical!
