Love your Podcast Andrew!! I'm a huge fan of RUSH,And of course Neil Peart!! Neil Peart is the Drummer that influenced me!! Living in the Buckeye State of Ohio,in America!! Thank you again Andrew!!!!
I feel so fortunate to have shared time on this earth with Neil Peart and Rush.
People say Peart couldn't swing. And they're right. His phrasing was stiff, solid, calculated, conducted, and metronomic without a hint of swing. It was almost like it was mechanically quantized. And balls-on the money. Thats exactly what made his style so perfect for RUSH.
This song really showcases how Neil played cymbal patterns better than anyone else, the focus people have on drums without the cymbals never fails to amaze me.
Oh MY, that Highhat WORK!!! And that LOOK, on your face, Priceless!

Yes Indeed :)
Love those comments about the 'art'. No need for me to expand. Just spot on.
The nailed "Red Barchetta" in one take in the studio. The following is from Neil's notes in the Moving Pictures tour book: "With only a few runs to get the sounds together, it was to be that rarest of all animals (for ourselves, anyway!), a one-take wonder". Amazing.
i feel very fortunate to have seen them live as many times as i did, it was always interesting how close they came to the sound of the albums. seeing Neil and how hard he hit for the whole show was really something to witness, his focus and intensity was second to none.

The greatest drummer to ever live PERIOD!!!!!!!
maybe because I'm a petrol head but this will always be one of my favorite Rush tunes. The section starting at 4:15 is probably one of my favorite in their whole discog, it's perfect. Neil's hihat playing, Alex's soaring chord stabs over the open pedal tone and Geddy's vocals delivering Neil's lyrics with justice.

Rush week is 2 songs? And ends on a Thursday? Oh ya, that's right. You did do a reaction to a cover of every rush song. That was actually very cool. But If I was in Canada, I'd be looking for my "I'm a little upset " sign!
@thevilifyingforce
2 жыл бұрын
I've got an extra sign for you. 2 songs as a 'week' is pretty ridiculous.
Neil did a few instructional videos with Hudson Music and the last one (around 2010-11 Time Machine tour) has him talking in detail about each of his drum parts on this 1981 Moving Pictures album. Segments of the DVD are available on KZread and I bet you would really enjoy hearing him talk about his process. His intellect was just... Whew! Off the charts. Probably one of the most interesting people I've ever come across, and drumming isn't even at the top of the list of reasons. Your final comment about him coming into a studio and you "just let him play" doesn't describe his process at all -- he carefully crafted each part in advance, practiced practiced practiced, and reproduced those parts as faithfully as possible for 40 years each time they performed a song live. He often said he was not an improvisational player, until the very end of his career, when he allowed himself some freedom within his carefully crafted solos and parts. Anyway, thanks for doing this series. So much fun!
@CrashEng
Жыл бұрын
He wasn't referring to Neil just playing whatever he wanted, he was referring to how Neil's sculpted choice of what he plays and how is organic and unedited overall. He's not saying Neil was improvising, he's saying that Neil's choice of crafted sections that he brought into the studio when he recorded the track was its own piece of art that wasn't mucked with in the editing process later--you took Neil's entire section of crafted drumming and mostly just let it be.
As someone who doesn't play music but just enjoys it, I find your videos very interesting since I know next to nothing about how to make music. I love Rush and I will always be here for any Rush you choose to do. Thanks for the interesting take on the skill side of the music.

I’ve been listening to Rush pretty much all of my life. The second album I ever purchased was 2112 with my lawn mowing money. I’ve worn out several set of vinyl and cassettes listening to them. For what ever reason, I concentrated on Neil and Getty’s work, how intricately they wove together to create the rhythm that is Rush. A lot of my friends concentrated on Alex’s work. We went to see them for the R40 concert. First, absolutely my favorite concert I’ve attended. Amazing musicianship and performance. The interesting thing that happened was my guitar friends couldn’t stop talking about Getty and how they’ve underrated him all these years. I was the one saying the same about Alex. We’ve all listened to Rush literally a thousand times and are still learning nuances about songs you’d think we’d have memorized by now.
Seeing the sheet music is outstanding. I played different instruments from the time I was in 4th grade all the way thru college. Instruments ranging from snare, bass drum, to trumpet, trombone, valve trombone, sax - both tenor & alto. Really enjoyed playing all the instruments. Had a blast on the long trips also.
Neil back then used his trusted Slingerland Snare all the way up til early 90's.
Hey, Andrew.. I just wanted to thank u for reviewing this isolated drum track. From one of the Most Legendary drummers in the in music history.. I have Never heard it before... Thanks Andrew!

So I'm reading comments as you are. Eric and Geddy let Rutsey go, not for health problems, and not because he didn't share their vision. They actually were satisfied with him as a drummer, but he liked to party too hearty. In that way, it's true, he didn't share their vision. They were determined to be the best in the world. Rutsey didn't show up for rehearsals. He just wasn't as serious-minded about it as they were. Another factoid: from the start, they decided to divide all profits evenly between the three of them. No fighting over who did what and deserved more.

That track made me happy.
Thank you Rooney. To be honest, I don't think this is really Neil, I am hesitant about it. Anyway. You noticed Neil's drum tuning was quite singular, higher than most rock drummers. And there's an another interesting thing about the recording of this album. The sound engineer (Terry Brown I guess) told it was a headache for him, because Neil, as creative he was, wanted to try micing up the drums uniquely for each song. If you listen to every isolated drum song from this album you will notice the sound is a bit different every time. The kind of things only a band like Rush would do.
Hi, I was fortunate to see 20 shows and he never missed a stick throw. FYI! Hemispheres side 1 for real don't miss out on this. The stone on the keyboard is the cover of Test For Echo. Enjoy!

Andrew, If you want to begin getting insights into the personalities, these 40 seconds are a good start. The song in the background is 'Working Man', from the first album, 'Rush'. The "a nice cold beer" line (or "an ice cold beer"... could never decide as there were no lyrics with the first album!) is taken from that song. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3uNpJKAn66_f9o.html

I must say ,this was a bit odd..Yes, a lot of sibilance (or similar) on the cymbals , and , as someone who has listened to the studio (Moving Pictures) version of Red Barchetta , an uncountable number of times, the snare didn't sound right.Terry Brown ,producer, wouldn't have released it sounding like this. Maybe it was played about with, so as to get the isolated drum track.I have no idea, but if someone told me this wasn't Neil Peart playing but an extremely accomplished 'other' drummer, I wouldn't be surprised. I'd welcome opinions from other commentees on this. Thanks again Andrew for an excellent week of Neil Peart and Rush, I know you'll be exploring further in due course :)

Wow rush week was 2 songs.... I enjoy your videos just wish it was more obscure tracks or some instructional video stuff that is purely for drummers and has great insight.
REACT ON MATT MCGUIRE. HE HAS A NEW COVER OUT. AND ALSO HIS HIGH DRUM COVER
The drums make this song, literally. It gives a sense of building intensity, and a heart rush… is the car going to outrun the police? The crescendo with the drum part and the urgency. I cannot really listen to drum parts isolated as an autistic with noise sensitivity. No this is not noise, it is literal genius, so do not misquote me. I grew up in a a drum and bugle corps in North America, and it is a pity that they have become like pitiful marching bands lately. It would have been an awesome drum solo in the 80s or early 90s. You would need the full compliment of a drum unit to catch it, and then I doubt it would have done Neil Peart justice.

Hi Andrew, if you want some interesting technical drumming that's still got a funky feel to it, I'd like to propose this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m3eKtcavd5DFico.html A great 1980s British band who should have been huge but got screwed by a record label that ran off with their money. Their drummer Phil Minal has been making drum videos on KZread for years now (he runs an indoor climbing centre as his day job and has his studio in the basement there), but nobody watches them. He and I would really appreciate it if you gave him a bit of exposure...
Fun reaction, as always, Andrew! Btw, as @enriquemora9272 and @Paradig11111 raised the topic of mic’ing on Neil’s drums, I think we’re listening to a room mic track here… it all sounds like Neil, but I’m not hearing the crisp, close-mic’ed snare and tom sounds from the album. 😊
