Drum Samples - Converting Audio To Midi In Cubase Pro
In today’s video I will show you how to sample replace drums, and specifically, create MIDI notes from your actual drum audio within Cubase Pro
Converting drum audio to MIDI data in Cubase is fairly easy to do, and this is my go-to method for any type of sample replacement.
Most DAWs have a feature that will do this, so even if you use a different recording software, the actionable steps remain the same: Create - Align - Convert - Adjust Velocities.

Is there any way to do this directly inside Cubase with just a stereo drum track

By ear and looking at the transients.

It gets a little tricky, but it can be done using a combo of EQ and gates. Duplicate the stereo track so you have one for each drum and filter out the frequencies that don't apply. For example, filter out the snare out of the kick track, filter out the kick from the snare track, etc. The Slate Digital Drum Gate is pretty helpful with this too, as it does a pretty good job detecting the type of drum chosen and filtering out the rest. You'd then have to listen and watch the transients to ensure accuracy, and possibly even slice out some of the unnecessary audio in between hits for each drum. It can sometimes be a long-winded process, but it should give you a result that's accurate enough to convert the remaining audio to MIDI. In my Mix Prep video at the 13:11 mark, I cover a similar situation in which 4 toms were recorded on the same mono track. It shows how I approached splitting them to create samples. Here's the link. Hopefully this helps! kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6hmlNuIeaTaZcY.html

The problem is when you have a drum track in one file...

  • @FromZeroToStudio

That’s definitely more challenging but can still be accomplished by using different filters and manually splitting up the track as needed. It’s a much more labor intensive process for sure! I actually had to do that with the toms in this drum track. All 4 toms were on a single track coming right up the center without any panning. You can see how I split them up in my mix prep video at the link below. Check it out at around the 13:10 timestamp! Hope this helps! -Justin kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6hmlNuIeaTaZcY.html

...i wish there was just one command to do this, like logic has...cubase drum replacement is more complicated..🤔

Cubase can actually convert a drum audio track to MIDI very quickly, just like with Logic Pro. The detailed time involved is spent ensuring that your MIDI lines up perfectly with every transient and fine-tuning the velocities. Cubase can automatically do all that, but just like with any other DAW, it’s not 100% perfect. For the velocities, I find that it takes more time to sort through and correct any inconsistencies in velocity than it does to put them all at the same level and dial them in manually. Of course, this can all be preference in workflow! If you have a system that works well, stick with it and try to refine it for efficiency!
