Made this for a customer and upon further youtube searching I could not find a similar video. So if you need to remove a bung and do not have the proper tool or an ill fitting tool this might be helpful for you.

Thank you! This is how instructional videos should be presented, straight to the point and actually works! Nowadays most instructional videos are filled with too much blah-blahs only to end up not being helpful at all.

I work in a sheet metal fabrication shop, and use 50 gallon drums of spray glue. I use a Stanley Wonder Bar to remove the bung. Any pry bar about an 1-1/2" to 1-3/4" wide should do as it only needs to contact one of the inside tabs. The other edge will brace against the bung. Just stick in the bent end, twist, and the bung spins out easy, peasy, no 2 handed coordination required.

Nice! I thought it was something "right under my nose" in a way. Got 30 liters of ethanol I need for the lab but of course nobody bothered finding those tools to unlock them with. But I do have screwdrivers and non-tools that are similar. Good to see it demonstrated to avoid some potential messy mishaps.

That's the bung plug. How do you remover the actual bung on the lid?

  • @PhillipSpring82

If you are referring to the bung cover, if metal, i usually grab one of the tabs with pliers. I like to pinch the tab horizontally and then put away from the bung, then up, then across. I find it easiest to use channel locks to make sure the doesn't sliver off. If that happens then you will need to use larger needle nose pliers to just brute force rip it of.

  • @PhillipSpring82

Apologies for the late reply. Depending on how tight the bung has been torqued you will require different tools. If it has been torqued to hazmat shipping specs you will need a legitimate bung opening tool. If it is just a general tight I have used large sized channel locks to loosen that bung. Normal pliers will not be large enough. If you go this route make sure the thickness of the channel locks is close to the opening size of the bung.
