does anyone know why they even bothered with loco hauled? because far as i can see, there is no benefit, may be no drawback with a ''DVT'' but why not just use more of the same DMUs?

please explain how? From an operational point of view (as to the bean counters running it all, underfloor engines and vibration don't matter) I'm just curious why all of a sudden, Chiltern and TPE have suddenly decided they need 68 hauled stock. I mean yeah, If an engine breaks down, it's easy to replace, or if it's in for maintenance, but surely the standard set of advantages for DMUs are there too. Traditionally passenger locos can be used for freight at night (hence why the class 91s have 2 cabs), but given these are both passenger only operations do they plan to lease them out at night? or what?

Chiltern have had loco hauled stock for years and years. It was something their predecessors WSMR (Wrexham Shropshire and Marylebone Railway) introduced to the Chiltern line. After they went bust and the franchise changed hands, Arriva-run Chiltern Railways replaced the 67s with 68s. (I think there’s) five sets with 6 dedicated Chiltern livery locos and two DRS livery spares. Same with scotrail’s fife circle. Been running there for years and after a contract change (FirstGroup to Abellio), the 67 was replaced by the 68. Two sets with 2 ‘dedicated’ ScotRail livery locos and whatever DRS have left over as spares. TPE need extra capacity and just decided that the power of the 68 coupled with loco hauled stock was better than using more DMUs to cross the Pennines. Thirteen sets with 13 dedicated TransPennine livery locos and two DRS livery spares.

so Are you saying they wanted higher power-to-weight ratios? because that to me would make sense. thank you, I don't know why I didn't realise that, my window overlooks the HML and given that we now have (for now still slam door) HSTs, for the same reason, I can't think why that didn't occur to me.

I’d assume so, considering they’ve gotta get over the Pennines, they’re gonna need a lot of power for a five-coach train, and assuming I can do maths correctly, 3800hp of 68 hauling five 38ton (estimated) coaches has a much better P:W ratio than three 750hp engines on a 56t-per-coach 185.

It’s really not going to be long until these trains become too overcrowded. The only thing that’s stopping Britain’s railways from growing further is the limited length of trains. It’s holding the country back but with a privatised system, who wants to pay for extra carriages? Eats into profit doesn’t it 😐

Yes, but the majority of our platforms are just not long enough to support longer trains

DFT pays for new rolling stock not the TOCs, either way the privatised model we have is flawed

@@glenmears3774 So where do you get that idea from? Its actually ROSCOs that buy the rolling stock and then lease them to the TOCs. The only exception is the Class 800 IETs that the DfT specified and then ordered through a consortium but the train operators pay that consortium. I have heard some whoppers but yours took the biscuit ...

Burning Wang - OK so please explain why £ Bns of new trains are being built and delivered having been ordered by the Train Operating companies through the ROSCOs? How many carriages each train has is defined by the traffic on that particular route. generally trains are a lot longer than even 10 years ago. Oh by the way do you know what the average TOC profit margin is? Its 2%. Most of their revenues go to pay ROSCOs for the trains, access charges to Network Rail and premiums to the Government. Not sure you understand how the railways work. Still lets have good old BR back eh? .. magic ...
