Drowning Puppy

Фильм және анимация

Working as a network news cameraman during the big midwest flood of 1993, I was faced with trying to help a puppy struggling to keep his head above water. This is my original edit. Four other online media companies asked to use the story and they all made it shorter. Between my edit here and the four versions among other online media companies, this video has been viewed nearly 80-MILLION times! While I shot this experience in 1993, the raw tape was stored and forgotten until about 2017 when I came across the field tape and realized I could tell a story here that people would want to see. See my main work at DonSmith.TV.
My narration is delivered ASMR style.

    Filiboy, it took me 25 years to edit the footage and get it on KZread and, yes, he's gone by now, but he had a great life when otherwise he could have drowned at the time of this flood. I feel good about that.

    Reminds me of my dog, only hers was from lack of smarts. That dog herself in such predicaments I don't know how she didn't die in the first 2yrs of her life. She died when she was 10 which I figured I had at least 2yrs more with her. But remembering everything she almost killed herself with, I'm happy I even got 10yrs with her. But dogs still don't live long enough.

    Robert Carmody - You ask why I couldn't keep the puppy myself. I had two dogs at home back in Dallas, Texas and was covering the floods for an unknown stay NE of St. Louis, MO. Taking the dog and keeping him in my motel room and then traveling him back to Texas. Besides, the helicopter pilot asked for the puppy for his family and, knowing the pup was wanted, I let the pilot take him. I got a Christmas card that December from the puppy with a picture of the whole family that loved him.

    I’ve been a Metro cop for 35 years, and I was shot twice in the line of duty two different times, I tell you this because you have the heart of a lion, and I was always told by other cops that I did, but you’re the bravest man I have ever seen? God Bless you always, sir, when I say to you that “YOU ARE MY TRUE HERO “ this comes from a son of a father, who was a combat US Marine in the Korean War , additionally my mother’s father was an Army WW1 combat vet, my oldest Marine brother who was a Vietnam Marine combat vet as well, all only had jobs as Marines or Soldiers . My grandfather then passed away at 79 as a Cop on duty (from a heart attack in 1979), never retiring, my father once state side from Korea was hired as a cop in 1954 & passed away w/out ever retiring at 83years old from agent orange cancer in 2015, which he acquired when he voluntarily went to Vietnam in 1964 as an adviser ,yet he was a Marine Sniper in Korea & Vietnam. My oldest brother a 38 year veteran cop Dallas PD detective Lieutenant & 14 first cousins all Metro Cops, you what you did was never from glory, or duty as a cop or Marine, but shear passion of humanity, a exemplary giant HEART, that caused you to clearly put yourself in the most dangerous position I have ever witnessed? Obviously you were not a first responder, you were not a Coast Guard Professional Swimmer, you were not a Navy Seal Young Operator trained at life saving, but only a middle aged cameraman with a phenomenally gargantuan HEART, so large that you virtually went against insurmountable odds to save a beautiful puppy in dire straights due to a horrific out of control flash flood? The shear odds that you probably were not going to make it, was astronomical. I have seen young operators with years of training & experience, delving into scenarios much much lesser than your scenario & with other professional operators & Blackhawks standing by ready to assist in the event of a mishap or miscalculation, but you had ZERO...Nothing..No One was there to help you save a puppy ? Your colleague could have done nothing ,but maybe point out where your body could be recovered in a week or so, because he was a chopper pilot also alone? Attempting to fathom & attempting to embrace the actual calculations of you going in ,to save a puppy, because your “Heart of a Lion” was leading you, is nothing short of “Devine Intervention” actually leading this Angel to make sure ,you made it back VICTORIOUS ? I viewed & listened to Tactical operators who failed over & over, when encountering actual scenarios. Many Top Tactical Cops & Tactical Military almost made it, But didn’t. I feel that civilians do not truly see the overwhelming significance, unless they have been in scenarios, close to what you went through, and I’ll be candid, I was a K-9 handler for 11 years, and I’d like to think that I would do that for my K-9 partner, but no way am I near gutsy enough ,or have the Lion’s Heart , required to take on ,the task that you took on, all you lacked was a Halo & Wings, I’m so sorry to be fixated, but the beauty of where your heart lead you , can never be diminished in any way. Thank you sir, but you have an angel sitting on your side because that water is absolutely raging & it’s unbelievable that you made it !

    I had this same thing happen to me in a place called Silvana in WA, the roads had flooded from the mountain pouring to much water in there river, and I saw farm animals tripping in the water but making there way into there barns, and I saw some dogs struggling with the current, I told my dad to drive along next to me as he I stood outside the car, clinging onto his hand as he had removed the drivers side door for this purpose, to make sure I couldn't be swept away, I would scoop up animals to small to walk into a barn and throw them in the back of his pick up, and when we couldn't see anymore, we knew we either got them all, or the rest had drifted into the rivers path, where no matter what, we couldn't help, that river area was currently about a story deep and moving fast, the roads were rough enough but we knew the roads and where it would be safe, as long as we went slow over the bridge and stayed on a certain side of the train tracks, we would be safe, as for the barns, well the one barn on the otherside of the train tracks collapsed, to much water, lucky that was just for farm tools, most of the barn animals were fine, some were a little scuffed up from tripping over each other in the water, but nothing serious, and in total we rescued about 5 dogs, 2 little ones, 2 large ones, and a puppy we found on the steps of an abandoned gas station. It was.. Not a good day.

    Thankyou so much Mr. Smith. You are a true hero. Most television people just try to videotape the puppy's struggle and him drowning in the flood waters. I have watched videos of heartless television crew who record injured wild animals and watch them die just like that, without trying to get any kind of help. There was one about a lion cub who dislocated his hips and couldn't move his back legs. He was literally crawling and trying really hard to catch up with the speed of his mom, brother and other pack members. Sadly he failed and the pack left without him. Anybody with a heart would have atleast contacted the sanctuary officials/guards and shared the information. The camera crew documented the cubs struggles and in the next scene showed his lifeless body covered with flies and a small pack (not his own pack) of lionesses with their cubs inspecting the dead body. That was the most heartless and inhuman thing i have ever watched in my life . RIP lion cub. You put up a strong fight.

    It really seems inhuman but some documentaries are trying to capture life and death in nature. I myself think it's very cruel. What is there to learn if you cannot intervene in an unnecessary death?

  • @anjana367

    @anjana367

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@charly3575 On one hand, we have conservationists and animal rights& rehab center people trying really hard to help and rescue animals in need and on the other there are these so called documentary makers whose only aim is to interfere into the habitats of wild animals, record their days and nights, stripping them off their privacy ( even recording them mating and give birth) and who knows what- all for winning awards and recognition. Even a little child would have tried to help had he/she witnessed such a situation. Who knows if they themselves caused these injuries to the animals in the name of "recording death due to injury in nature". You never know what happens behind the scenes. These videos are well edited and most of them do not show how the animal got injured in the first place. The voice over says weird things like " this was the only cub that survived in a particular litter but a hyena injured it/ tried to eat him. If the cub was actually the only survivor in that litter, then naturally the whole pack would be extremely protective of him. They wouldn't just leave him somewhere and go hunting. His safety would be of utmost importance to them. Ofcourse I understand the practicality of trying to intervene even if the animal was injured by natural causes or born disabled. There was a video in which a baby hippo was fatally injured when it was caught between a large croc and his hippo gang leader. The whole fight happened in water so it's only after a while that they noticed the injured baby. The baby walked up to the banks of the river and was in severe pain. There were little birds on his body that were pecking at his wounds. His mother stood at a distance watching as the baby embraced death. In this case the camera crew cannot possibly do anything for the animal, firstly because there was around 100 hippos in the place and they would definitely attack if ppl get anywhere near junior. Secondly there was heavy blood loss which meant that chances of saving him were dim. Thirdly if the ppl managed to get close to the baby, even he wouldn't understand that they are trying to help him, he would run towards his mom and may further injure himself. My point applies in cases where the family/pack leaves the injured/disabled animal and go (especially during migration). Such animals can be rescued and treated. And then either sent back to where they were taken from or sent to reserves or rehabs where they can thrive. This is my humble request to the people from Animal Planet and such who belong to the entertainment industry, the next time you come across any abandoned/injured/disabled animal/bird, kindly leave your equipments and try to help. In case you cannot physically go near it and help, atleast contact the sanctuary officials or guards. Do your bit in saving a life. Humanity should prevail over everything.

    My legs have been that tired before. It's scary, especially in the middle of a flood.

    It wasn’t tired legs for me. The rushing water was trying to push my feet out from under me.

    My uncle tried to save a dog from the flooded Canandaigua River way back when, and both he and the dog had to be rescued. He even got into a local newspaper and they ran an online version of the story, but when I went to the link, I couldn't find it.
