This is a Great Product! Dropracks.com sent me their Dropracks XL for the 4Runner. Yakima was kind enough to send me the feet! You have to see these lift assist crossbars!! From Kayaks to Canoes, to ladders to anything you need to have on top of your vehicle. This Elevating Roof Rack is amazing!

    Nice, I'm looking at peddle driven kayaks at the moment and with the added weight of those type vessels and the fact I'm getting older they won't be as easy to throw on top of the car so I'm debating either a lift assist or trailer.

    It is def not the cheap option...however, If the inability to load a vessel on a vehicle is keeping someone off the water, the price becomes well worth it! It is a game changer from kayaks to canoes to anything else.

    Something that goes for $2350 to put kayaks on top of a car is, in my opinion, by definition, overly complicated. I'm almost 70 and have no problem sliding my 16 and 14.5 foot kayaks onto the back of my Subaru Outback using an old rug to protect my car and pushing them onto some Malone Seawings that I got used for $25. But to each his own. If there are people out there willing/able to spend $2350 on such a contraption, then good for them.

    Wondering how much stress the side loading weight, is putting the factory rack? Concerns would be factory rack or roof failure, with the load hanging off the side. Many SUVs roof weight limits are listed between 125-175lbs depending on the model. The rack it self may be stronger than the roof it is attached too. Still a nice looking system.

  • @dropracks

    @dropracks

    Ай бұрын

    Great question! Lets run some numbers: If you put 175 lbs evenly distributed on Dropracks, that is approximately 87,5 lbs on each bar. The pressure on the closest attachment to the siderail will be approximately 2X the load, which is 175 lbs. Similar the wight of a grown up.. In comparison; a roof top tent with persons inside moving around can easily cause way more pressure on the attachments. On the attachments on the opposite side of the vehicle, you will have forces lifting upwards. Vehicles and (certified) racks must be able to handle the lifting force caused by two surfboards mounted next to each other, driving at high speed. This is set to 3500N (787lbs per crossbar, and 282 per attachment) in the European roof rack standard. The lift caused by Dropracks on each attachment is approximately equal to the load per bar, which is 87,5lbs. That equals approximately 31 % of the capacity on the attachment. But like you say: It is important to use solid clamps/attachments from well known brands, such as Thule and Yakima.

    You can put a skibox on Dropracks ;) We have a Universal T-bolt kit that can secure most roof boxes to the T-slot on Dropracks. (If you have a thule box, Thule does also have T-bolt kits for their boxes, that works with Dropracks).
