Thanks. I always wondered. Also, do the rails then get welded so there is no expansion joint?

Why would the rails be put on the outside and then have another crew put them on the inside? Would save a lot of time if the rails were put on the inside first time around. Thanks for the video !!

mostly because the rail is delivered as much as weeks before the install gang arrives. Also, precision location placement is required for replacing the track

Ric, Is this the first time this rail has been replaced since it was installed in the early sixties? Why is it being replaced? With heavier rail or is it worn out from use? What weight rail is this? I assume that it is continuous rail all the way down to Aurora welded together in quarter mile sections? Never have understood how they allowed for expansion and contraction with the temperature. Have you got a picture of the old rail being taken up? What happens to the old rail? There is a steel mill in the town that I lived in in ohio, Marion, ( where the draglines were built} that specialized in using old rail to make fence post. They fed the rail into a furnace and heated it up seperated the flange, web , and rail into three parts and sent it off to rolling mills that made them into the fence post for highway signs that we are familiar with. They also made concrete rebar out of it. Best post and rebar in the world according to them.

Hey John! Not sure if this is first replacement, but would not be surprised. I believe that the previous line construction used concrete ties, and they were later replaced, so I don't know if they replaced rail at the same time. It is being replaced because CSX had a molten sulfur derail on the WL last January. A Sperry inspectional the the time showed MANY defects in the old jointed rail. The new rail is heavier, sorry I don't know details, though I DO have a photo that shows the difference pretty well. it is continuous welded from Phosphate Junction to the mine, all 25 miles. They have two HUGE torch tractors that heat the rail to 96 degrees before it is spiked in place.I have pictures of old rail being removed--the fish plate is torched off, and whole rail is picked up by a truck that carried it out for scrapping. Pictures of most of this is on my Facebook page, with this and much more coming to my web page soon. I just uploaded the equipment loading on the train to leave. You can see EVERY unit, if you have about 40 minutes;^)

@@RicCarter Thanks for the response to my questions. I was working at TGS when the rail line was first laid. It did have concrete ties poured there in Chocowinity. I thought they should last forever. Quite interesting to see how they weld the sections of track together.

they run a trench across the road and drop the track into the trench and cover it until the rail gang comes to install

I am sure there is, and that is how each of those machines were invented;^) Better methods likely exist which US Corporations are unwilling to buy.
