IMPORTANT
Visit www.casa.gov.au/knowyourdrone... to familiarise yourself with the current rules and regulations. We contacted CASA who confirmed
- You do NOT need an RPL ( Recreational Pilot Licence ) for drones that weigh less than 25kgs
- You cannot fly your drone at night ( we paddled baits out at night )
- Drone max altitude is 120 meters ( 400 feet )
- Can only operate 1 drone at a time
- Be respectful and keep away from people when flying and recording ( min 30 meters distance )
- Can not fly near airports. 5.5-kilometre restrictions apply.
Thank you to all who commented. To clear up we did NOT fly the drone at night. We flew out baits with the drone an hour before dark and we had a Hobie kayak with us for any baits taken deployed in the dark. That kayak was used once during the filming to re-drop a bait that got hit at around 10 pm but did not hook up ( I suspect it was a 7 giller or bronzie due to the big teeth marks in the bait ). We have the footage of the kayak taking a bait out in the dark for good measure. I appreciate everyone’s responses and apologise for any confusion. We always advocate for following the correct rules and guidelines but we could have done a better job of explaining what we did in the video. Thanks for all your input !!.

That's a really nice Bronzie, great stuff Alan and crew. They have started to show up this side (Cape Town) again, as well as the 7-gill (Cow sharks). There was a severe lack of them with the Orcas destroying the populations.

Great video mate, quick question. My PL3 camera does exactly the same thing “vibrating continuously” when I switch the drone on (swell pro 3+). How does your/ stabilize after you take off ?

Great shore based fishing. Just wondering how you got those baits out if you can't legally fly a recreational drone at night ?

Floaters will not make it sink... but then what? do you need a boat to fetch it when it dropped in the middle of the sea? can it launch from the water? just curious

Hi Allan, would you recommend registering the drone with swellpro? What does that mean? Do you have the link for it?

  • @fishingmad

Yeah they can be quite expensive. The big issue is standard baits have very small weight capacity. So you can fly out big baits or big sinkers. You could try and modify a basic drone but I suspect it wouldn't work great.

Just a suggestion. Drones are one of those things people commonly buy and never really get out and use so the second hand market can be a good place to look and pick up something decent, in good condition and at a more affordable price.

I find in close you get all the pest species like banjos that destroy your baits, getting the bait out to 3-5 meters deep makes a big difference but still worth a shot.

Can you help me mate, just purchased one today. What are the requirements here in Australia for flying such big drones? Do i need to register with CASA and get a drone pilot license? Im only going to use the drone for recreational activities. Thanks

Yeah its really confusing, I got so many mixed messages from manufacturers of drones, Australian regulators and drone users. I had multiple calls between CASA and Swell pro to try and get a better understanding of it. I wrote this which has the rules they made clear document about half way down fishingmad.com.au/review/swellpro-fisherman-max-fd2-review the final wording from CASA was that an RPL license is not required if the drone weighs less then 25kgs

Have a look at the FishingMad website there are over 200 location guides on where to fish and what to target. Right now whiting, snapper, salmon, flathead and squid great options and in areas like Portland you might catch a kingfish. Freshwater cod, yellowbelly and reddies also fishing well.
